NFT: Knicks Draft

TyreeHelmet : 6/7/2018 11:20 am
We are 2 weeks away from one of the only annual nights that matter for the Knicks- the NBA Draft. Of the 6 major mock drafts, 3 are projecting Sexton, 2 Trae Young, and 1 Wendell Carter. Unrelated to the Knicks, but the Doncic appears to be falling now.

Trae Young scares the hell out of me. I would prefer either Bridges- Mikal first, to taking Young. For me Porter Jr. would be the dream pick. I know the medical and personality concerns, but he's worth the risk. I saw an ESPN mock draft special a few weeks ago that had him dropping out of the lottery but that doesn't seem realistic.

Who would you guys be targeting? Knicks need to nail this one.

Jalen Rose was on with Bill Simmons this week and said from things hes hearing that he feels Durant to the Knicks is a possibility after next season. Basically said that if he wins 3 rings with the Warriors only thing left to prove is that he can make a winner out of a place that hasnt won anything in decades and a big market like NY would make a lot of business sense. Also probably doesnt hurt that his manager Rich Kleiman is a Knicks fan...

you have to feel good about the Knicks Summer 19.

Durant, Irving, Kawhi, Klay, all free agents.

It's still staggering to me that that season the Knicks will be paying 37 fucking million dollars to Joakim Noah and Tim Hardaway. If you include Lance Thomas and Courtney Lee that number jumps to 56 MILLION!!!

56 million on Tim Hardaway, Joakim Noah, Courtney Lee and Lance Thomas.

I don't like this take. Too defeatest. Nothing to suggest that Scott Perry is anything but competent so far.

You can't assume shit. When it's done, it's done. At the moment they're on the hook for 57 mil for two average role players and two trash players.
What has Scott Perry done so far that would suggest anything
Greg from LI : 6/8/2018 11:22 am : link
either way? But Dolan is still the owner and Steve Mills still has a job. Until they show otherwise, being defeatist is a sensible posture.

Being a defeatist is never sensible.

Caps, Eagles and cubs all won world titles recently. If youre a sports fan and cant possess even a shred of hope....whats the point? Not singling you out just making a point. I have no use for discussing what happened at msg 3-4-5 years ago. It means nothing.
With all the reports
giantsfan44ab : 6/8/2018 11:39 am : link
of teams like Denver willing to part with a lottery pick to get rid of Faried (an expiring) I think we can all kiss ridding Lee for no contract in return goodbye. Considering the direction of this team now Lee might be a worse contract than Thomas's at this point as it is more expensive and guaranteed.

The structure and competitive levels of the NBA arent comparable to those sports. Basketball allows for very little randomness or chance, the best teams win out consistently.

you dont have to trade him for nothing, a expiring will work fine...

or something like lee for aldrich and 20
Thats not to say that I expect this shit stained franchise to win
djm : 6/8/2018 11:44 am : link
But Im hopeful. We have a big piece in place with KP who should he fine in another 10 months or so. Frank will be a solid pro here. We have picks. Need to hit doubles in these next two drafts, which isnt asking too much. Time will tell.
Even a mildly competent basketball franchise can win 40-45 games.
bceagle05 : 6/8/2018 11:46 am : link
If I had to guess, that's the type of team we're going to build over the next couple of years. If the impossible happens and we actually land a star free agent, we can raise the bar a bit to 50+ wins and playoff advancement - or if one of our next two draft picks blossoms into a legit star.

Word? What did the Warriors win before 2014? LeBron is probably the greatest player of all time, and he's 3-5 about to be 3-6 in the Finals.

Build a good team and you can compete.
The Warriors had a fair bit of good fortune
Greg from LI : 6/8/2018 11:56 am : link
They had a #7 pick turn into arguably the greatest shooter the league has ever seen, an 11th pick turn into a great shooter and All-Star, and a #35 pick turn into the best defender in the league.

Have the Knicks had good luck? Like, ever? Maybe the last time was the Hue Hollins call that helped them get into the 1994 Finals.
The Warriors got Curry with #7
Greg from LI : 6/8/2018 11:58 am : link
Meanwhile, the Knicks get Frenchy at #8, whose upside is he might turn out to be a solid NBA starter.

Sure they have. KP is a goddamn unicorn and he was drafted after D'Angelo Russell and Jahlil Okafor.
KP is a good player
Greg from LI : 6/8/2018 12:00 pm : link
Not really even close to a great player at this stage, and looking like a guy who's going to be banged up quite a bit. Fun to watch when he's on, pretty hard to see him as someone who can carry a team to a title.

Dude what? He was an all star last year as a 21 year old just tapping into the potential of his game. That's despite terrible coaching and mismanagement.

There's such a huge gap between "carry a team to a title" and "good player".
from reading all the mocks, looks like we'll be choosing 1 of these 5-
Del Shofner : 6/8/2018 12:02 pm : link
Mikal B.
Sexton
Young
Miles B.
Knox

Taking another PG does seem unattractive but I suppose it's BPA when you're not very good like the Knicks.

I think the list is longer than that. I'd add Wendell Carter, Zhaire Smith and Michael Porter Jr to the list. Probably Lonnie Walker too.

There isnt one single person here that had KP pegged as a 20-7-3 guy in his 3rd year.

Hes a huge piece moving toward.
I think grabbing Porzingis at #4 was good luck.
bceagle05 : 6/8/2018 12:12 pm : link
If we wind up at #2/#3 we likely would've taken Okafor or Russell and added them to our list of awful draft picks. The common theme is the draft - we haven't had enough picks to give ourselves a chance, but now we do. Heck, the Clippers were a far greater laughingstock than we are now, but they drafted Griffin, Jordan and the pieces necessary to acquire Paul (with a helping hand from Stern, of course) and built a contending team.

I expect us to be pretty excited about our future going into the summer of 2019, with the ninth pick this year, a probable lottery pick next year, and money to spend.

I think frenchy is going to be a good starter. He can defend, shoot and finish. Just needs experience, confidence and more growth/strength. Hes got the most important attribute work ethic.
Writing
Jon in NYC : 6/8/2018 12:22 pm : link
off Frenchy is silly. I really don't want to come off as if I'm shitting out rainbows, but he's probably the best defensive PG in the league right year and is growing in both height and weight. If he can improve his handle and shooting, we're on to something here.
if we are going to say great players carry a team
nygiants16 : 6/8/2018 12:39 pm : link
so that is only 1 player? lebron james, every team that has won a championship has had multiple great players
Considering Carter is projected in the 7-10 range

Why cant he be a one??

Again, no one had KP doing what he did in year 3 back when he was drafted. No all of a sudden hes a finished product?

KP is on a wonderful trajectory. The injury sucked but it wont stop him. Hes going to be a super star player if hes not insanely unlucky along the way.

The Knicks have representation at the Priority Sports Pro Day in Chicago, where Michael Porter Jr. is working out, per sources. Knicks president Steve Mills and GM Scott Perry were not there but the Knicks have a pre-draft meeting scheduled with Porter Jr., per ESPN sources.

Agreed. He definitely has a long way to go. He was a disaster offensively. Lets see how things shake out these next 6 months. Its unfair to just assume that Frankie will go from bad to good offensively.
KP
Jon in NYC : 6/8/2018 1:31 pm : link
is a 2nd scorer on a top team. He should be playing with an explosive scoring wing or guard. Frank fits as a 4th or 5th option who also shuts down the best opposing guard. This draft should be about finding pieces next to those two.
Representation for the Porter pro day
ghost718 : 6/8/2018 1:42 pm : link
I would have sent Ron Baker
Agreed about the scoring guard/wing.
bceagle05 : 6/8/2018 2:51 pm : link
That's why I keep coming back to Sexton, though guys like Sexton are available every year in the draft. Last year was Dennis Smith, next year will be someone else. Perhaps the Knicks take the wing this year and let the young PGs develop, then make a run at a bigger name next summer.

A guy like Mikal is a fine pick, but he needs a playmaker to get him open looks, too. The pieces won't fall into place until we get that slashing guard who will get KP layups and dunks, and get the wings some open looks from deep.
