NFT: Knicks Draft

TyreeHelmet : 6/7/2018 11:20 am
We are 2 weeks away from one of the only annual nights that matter for the Knicks- the NBA Draft. Of the 6 major mock drafts, 3 are projecting Sexton, 2 Trae Young, and 1 Wendell Carter. Unrelated to the Knicks, but the Doncic appears to be falling now.

Trae Young scares the hell out of me. I would prefer either Bridges- Mikal first, to taking Young. For me Porter Jr. would be the dream pick. I know the medical and personality concerns, but he's worth the risk. I saw an ESPN mock draft special a few weeks ago that had him dropping out of the lottery but that doesn't seem realistic.

Who would you guys be targeting? Knicks need to nail this one.

despite management being on record saying they'd prefer a wing. Either people know the Knicks like him or they just assume smokescreens. We'll find out soon enough. I had no problem passing on Dennis Smith last year because there are Dennis Smiths in every draft - Sexton is a perfect example of that, and could easily be even better than DSJr.

My opinion: DSJ is more of a ME player. He'll make some highlights, no doubt. His durability also seems Baron Davis like. Sexton seems like a born leader, fiery and tough. Sexton also seems like a kid that will take to coaching. Sexton is by no means a polished product as a floor general but he's a very smart and grounded kid. A lot to like.
If we're going to get the Clips 12th and 13th picks,
Ira : 6/7/2018 2:10 pm : link
we'll probably have to give them someone in addition to the 9th pick. I don't know who that would be.

Pep22 : 6/7/2018 2:11 pm : link
I don't believe is a TOP 5 wing/SF. He's young and that can be a selling point. But his athleticism, skill level and intangibles all seem fairly pedestrian. I'd rank Doncic (obviously), Porter (if the doctors sign off), both Bridges and Keita Bates-Diop as SFs.
Yeah, I have an irrational love of Sexton, even if he's got a lot of
Heisenberg : 6/7/2018 2:18 pm : link
things to improve on. I really think the Garden would love him. I think he's Marcus Smart if Marcus Smart could score.

Plus's:

He'd be the best penetrator the Knicks have had in a long time. They lack slashers.
His run the break mentality would be fun to watch. Definitely a play with pace guy.
He and Frank together could give some opposing back courts a hard time defensively.
Incredibly competitive. I mean, just watch him in that 3 on 5 game. God, the Knicks could use that.

Negatives
Only an OK passer.
Lots of turnovers
Shot is a bit sketchy.

He is a lot like Fox last year, IMO. If I had to bet on who is the better player between Sexton and Young, I'm taking Sexton.

I am hoping we can find a WING but if it has to be a lead guard, I'd rank them:

1 SGA - yes, he's Ntilikina-like, but I think the duo would be very unique and allow some "inter-change-ability" on both ends. Not unlike Frank, the kid is a tireless worker, intelligent player etc.

2 Sexton - the Bledsoe comparison has been out there but to me, EB is more about strength/power than speed whereas Sexton has the opposite ratio. Still, the kid has the elite athleticism for the position along with a personality that is ideal for how this team is hopefully transitioning as its brass has stated in terms of its vision.

3 Young - do I think he'll produce in the stat department? Yes. But will his defense be a nightmare? Also a yes.

Having SGA and Frank defensively would be crazy, 2 6'6' guards with 7 foot wingspans and tremendous lateral quickness. There might be some penetration/shooting issues with the pairing but you would have the foundation of an elite defense with those 2.
Young and Sexton are good gets
RAIN : 6/7/2018 4:28 pm : link
for different reasons.

Young does so many things offensively, and oozes playmaking, Sexton is a physical freak, competitor and two way threat. If Jackson falls, he reminds me of Horford, i would do that for a big. If Doncic falls, that is easy.

But Sexton and Young, I expect those guys to rise, I hope we have a shot at either. I like SGA as well.

Porter is problem. His attitude is an issue. His back, is scary. For those reasons... I am out. His talent isn't the issue. He SHOULD go #2, but he won't because teams have learned their lessons.

Honestly he should have just transferred. Duke was the worst possible situation for him last year. If he switched spots with Sexton for example, I wonder how differently we're looking at their draft stock.

That video was painful...

I understand the injury and attitude concerns but this guy oozes talent. You could construct some incredible shooting lineups with him and KP at the 4/5. He also has the same standing reach of Anthony Davis. He has the potential to be a good defender.

This would a be homerun pick and well worth the risk for the Knicks.

Out of everyone in our ranch, he is the one with the "it" factor, along with Young. Young's lack of athleticism and size is a bit concerning, but you don't have that concern with Sexton.

For me: Porter, Sexton, than Smith....

Jalen Rose was on with Bill Simmons this week and said from things he’s hearing that he feels Durant to the Knicks is a possibility after next season. Basically said that if he wins 3 rings with the Warriors only thing left to prove is that he can make a winner out of a place that hasn’t won anything in decades and a big market like NY would make a lot of business sense. Also probably doesn’t hurt that his manager Rich Kleiman is a Knicks fan...

Durant, Irving, Kawhi, Klay, all free agents.

It's still staggering to me that that season the Knicks will be paying 37 fucking million dollars to Joakim Noah and Tim Hardaway. If you include Lance Thomas and Courtney Lee that number jumps to 56 MILLION!!!

56 million on Tim Hardaway, Joakim Noah, Courtney Lee and Lance Thomas.

Being a defeatist is never sensible.

Caps, Eagles and cubs all won world titles recently. If you’re a sports fan and can’t possess even a shred of hope....what’s the point? Not singling you out just making a point. I have no use for discussing what happened at msg 3-4-5 years ago. It means nothing.
With all the reports

of teams like Denver willing to part with a lottery pick to get rid of Faried (an expiring) I think we can all kiss ridding Lee for no contract in return goodbye. Considering the direction of this team now Lee might be a worse contract than Thomas's at this point as it is more expensive and guaranteed.

The structure and competitive levels of the NBA arent comparable to those sports. Basketball allows for very little randomness or chance, the best teams win out consistently.

But I’m hopeful. We have a big piece in place with KP who should he fine in another 10 months or so. Frank will be a solid pro here. We have picks. Need to hit doubles in these next two drafts, which isn’t asking too much. Time will tell.
Even a mildly competent basketball franchise can win 40-45 games.
bceagle05 : 6/8/2018 11:46 am : link
If I had to guess, that's the type of team we're going to build over the next couple of years. If the impossible happens and we actually land a star free agent, we can raise the bar a bit to 50+ wins and playoff advancement - or if one of our next two draft picks blossoms into a legit star.

Word? What did the Warriors win before 2014? LeBron is probably the greatest player of all time, and he's 3-5 about to be 3-6 in the Finals.

Build a good team and you can compete.

They had a #7 pick turn into arguably the greatest shooter the league has ever seen, an 11th pick turn into a great shooter and All-Star, and a #35 pick turn into the best defender in the league.

Have the Knicks had good luck? Like, ever? Maybe the last time was the Hue Hollins call that helped them get into the 1994 Finals.
