"While I am incredibly appreciative of this opportunity, I have made the decision to publicly decline my invitation to attend the induction ceremony in Canton," Owens said in a statement released Thursday. "... After visiting Canton earlier this year, I came to the realization that I wish to celebrate what will be one of the most memorable days of my life, elsewhere." |
I hope he changes his mind , but I support him being elsewhere if that's what he truly wants , all the power to him
I'm curious why you say, "Good for him."
I agree that T.O. shouldn't have had to wait as long as he did. However, all this does is make him look foolish again.
But I am not shocked in the least bit that TO would find a chance to make something all about him.
It's probably his last chance for attention.
maybe he'll deliver his acceptance speech doing sit-ups in his driveway.
Yeah when you look at T.O. Outside of football, he's a really genuinely sweet loving man, guy is all love. He can choose to watch and celebrate his special day any way he wants to. Maybe he just doesn't feel comfortable going to Canton for the induction? Perhaps some of those folks make him feel like an outcast and not free to be who he is
It's his right not to go. I think most would go. But he doesn't have to if he doesn't want to.
Technically it only took an extra two years, or one year longer than it took for Strahan to be voted in.
The great irony is that the Hall of Fame is based on individual accomplishments. And it's tough to think of a player more driven by his individual success than TO.
He was considered as soon as he was eligible. It took until his 3rd year of eligibility to get in. Not quite Harry Carson...
And it's kind of fitting that he'll go in with Randy Moss.
Yep that's a natural reaction to this basically non-story. What a scumbag for declining an invitation!
Some of you guys are fucking unbelievable.
I get that it's a very individual award, and ultimately no one will lose sleep over this, but it's also about joining a select group, and respecting your peers in that group. I guess he can be applauded for not being hypocritical, but it also tells me he doesn't really understand what this is about.

He has the choice to do what he wants. Think about the fact that it took YEARS before he was even considered. Dont get the hate in general on this board.

You're kidding right? He's an asshole outside of football as well. I watched him leave a televised contest last year that he was participating in for a charity because he was heckled and he couldn't handle it.
He's a thin-skinned, selfish prick. If he doesn't want to be present, thats absolutely his right. But...a really genuinely sweet loving man?

And actually, he initiated the beef during that show and couldn't handle it when he caught shit back. He started taunting another contestant and then another one stepped in and called him out for it and the fact he blew through 70M. Guy's a prick
Does he have family (wife and kids?)? If not, I am wondering if he feels weird showing up alone?
World hates me-too spoiled brat punks who never surpassed the emotional maturity level of a high school chick. Go figure.
Could you imagine what this clown would say if he got 10 minutes of uninterrupted microphone time?
It might very well be can't miss tv...

Thought he was a nut case and hated his taunting during his career but the fact that he didn't get in until his third try is just complete bullshit.

The fact that he had to wait for two years had absolutely nothing to do with what he did as a player during his career. He just pissed off some sports writers. I guess I'm just anti sports writer, but if some pencil pushing geek wants to keep an absolute first ballot receiver out of the hall for two years for having his feelings hurt in a Q&A session, then I say good for TO for not feeling the need to go to said ceremony when he's finally allowed in. It's his choice. And I absolutely hated TO when he played us but selection process crap like that just waters down the HoF.
Why would he regret it? He's not turning down the HoF, he's just not going to the ceremony.
I don't know who decided to pick this guy to be the evening's entertainment but holy shit... Jeff Dunham with the fucking puppets would have been an upgrade.
Why would he regret it? He's not turning down the HoF, he's just not going to the ceremony.
I think when he has time to reflect TO is going to regret not taking advantage of the opportunity to thank the people who were so instrumental on his journey to Canton. And the ceremony stage is so ideal to do that.
Then again, it's TO. So maybe I'm too optimistic to think he has that capacity.
It’s not bullshit at all. Owens was in no way shape or form a first ballot absolute no brainer Hall of famer. Great player to be sure but not a super clean or super perfect career and not by a long shot.
Perfect players should get in on the first try. Owens was far from perfect.
Seems pretty silly to refuse to enshrine him if he doesn't show up to the ceremony. He was elected because of his playing career. Lack of attendance at the ceremony shouldn't void that.
Don't forget one of the best sound bites ever
He's my quarterback man!!!

Not first ballot? He's 2nd all time in receiving yards and third in receiving touchdowns. He was better than his contemporaries outside of Moss.
But let's get Tony freaking Dungy in first. Terrell Davis, Ken Stabler, Jason Taylor, etc could have waited another year.
It's probably not just the length of time it took him, every time his name came up - there was a lot of shit talking about him, some earned, some not so much.
