NFT: Good News on Climate Change

Mike from SI : 6/7/2018 2:53 pm
in the linked article below. This is good news regardless of your political affiliation or political thoughts on the matter, so let's keep that out of the discussion; thanks!

Interesting, but
Shecky : 6/7/2018 3:06 pm : link
This says we are still a looooong way from something being implemented

“At those rates, it would cost between $1 and $2.50 to remove the carbon dioxide released by burning a gallon of gasoline in a modern car.”
Sounds great

But stories of this nature come out regularly. There are a million little details that have to be worked out to convert a lab project to an industrial scale operation. 99 times out of 100 one of those little details ends up being a massive issue that makes it unusable.
Manure

Quote:
Jared: I'm sure you're aware of the Great London Horse Manure Crisis of 1894.

Emily Chang: I'm afraid I'm not.

Jared: In the 1890s, the Industrial Revolution had people flocking to the city, and more people equals more horses, and more horses equals more manure. And it was predicted that by the middle of the next century, there would be nine feet of manure covering the streets. But what no one saw coming, was a new technology that would completely obliterate those concerns. The car. Over night, the manure problem vanished. And the Internet, as we currently know it, is rife with, uh, identity theft, and spam and hacking. So, it's manure, and we believe that, in success, our new, entirely de-centralized Internet, will be just as significant as the car
That sounds great, but I still think
mikeinbloomfield : 6/7/2018 5:24 pm : link
the long term solution is weeding us off these technologies. There is a finite amount of oil in the ground. This kind of technology could delay the transition until it's too late.

and Norway have it right.
When I clicked the link I thought it was an Onion article
Ron from Ninerland : 6/7/2018 8:03 pm : link
but it turned out to be another Elon Musk type charlitan looking for publicity or funding. No doubt that this technology, if even possible on a large scale will be cost inefficient. But this guy will say something like "we owe it to the planet" to proceed while he lines his pockets and has his face plastered on CNN.
Even better news
ThatLimerickGuy : 6/7/2018 9:52 pm : link
Climate Change is a myth perpetuated by elites to make $$ for themselves so there is really nothing to worry about at all.

It may not ultimately be practical, but it's hardly smoke and mirrors.

So who to believe.... Neil deGrasse Tyson, or the guy obsessed with the Midwest Gay Club Scene, who pretends to be an insider despite never having brought a single credible piece of intel back to BBI.

It's a close one, but I'm going to side with Tyson here.

All the dummies who don’t believe in climate change will be
732NYG : 6/8/2018 11:37 am : link
dead before it effects them anyway. They haven’t cared about the environment yet, so why should we expect them to start now, when there are still profits to be made?

And with a small plant already operating the question to me seems one of scalability. Hey, the more and cheaper the alternatives the better.
Just plop one of these baby's right on top of your coal fired

Turbine generator.

And wala.

Two birds.

One stone.
BTW: The article only glancingly mentions
Jim in Fairfax : 6/8/2018 4:07 pm : link
That Bill Gates provided much of the investment in this company.

If this thing takes off, he could be a rich man...

If this has economic and technical legs -- I'll give you one guess on the industry who will make this happen.

Bill Gates also handpicked Steve Ballmer to run Microsoft. Tim Cook says thank you.
Not sure why

we are not on the moon mining helium-3.

Once we figure out the fusion thing, we probably will be.

Gary, I really hope so. There's a lot of $ to be made commercially. Better still - no pollution. The USA could hold the world by the nuts.

This technology sounds like a great Plan B
eclipz928 : 6/10/2018 9:54 am : link
for slowing down global warming. Plan A still has to include reducing emissions. But very cool to read about this nonetheless. Hopefully as we get fewer climate-change deniers in Congress this will be the sort of thing we invest in to do more research on in the future.
