NFT: Mets trade chips

CMicks3110 : 6/7/2018 9:44 pm
I pin the following non-cornerstone players as being tradeable at the deadline:

Familia - Certainly can't expect an Andrew Miller type return, but Jeurys should have a decent market. He has tremendous stuff, a low 2 era, and is a former all-star. The bloom is not as shiny as a few years ago but he is better than a Jeffress type. Similar comp could be Mark Melancon, who was traded for Felipe Rivero. So maybe we can get a B-level prospect or two?

Asdrubal - Not too many contenders need second baseman. Maybe Milwaukee, Cleveland, or Arizona could add Cabby. Perhaps a B level prospect. Arizona has a few mid-level right handed hitting outfield prospects, which we could use.

Blevins - Probably a salary dump, so low-level low-upside if anything
AJ Ramos - similar to Belvins
Wilmer - trying to think which contender is lefty heavy, maybe Cubs or Brewers?

Wheeler - This will be the interesting sell, much more than deGrom, who I don't see them trading. I think if Wheeler continues trending upward with his pure stuff. He could be a prize at the deadline that could grab us something big, maybe a top 50 prospect. I wonder if we would consider trading him to his hometown braves as they have some high upside righties, otherwise, maybe Riley Pint from Colorado, who is basically a younger wheeler.

On Wheeler
The Braves are not trading for Wheeler
Jay on the Island : 6/7/2018 11:09 pm : link
If they did trade for a starting pitcher it would be a frontline starter. They already have a logjam forming in AA and AAA with SPs not to mention Foltynewicz, Newcomb, and Soroka already in Atlanta. Gohara is currently in the pen getting stretched out but once he does he will be in the rotation also forming a terrific young group.
Agree with Jay
Vanzetti : 6/8/2018 1:48 am : link
Wheeler is another guy like Folty or Newcombe with good stuff who struggles with command. Why would they add him? They need an established Ace like Degrom
No trade clause

If I were a coupon I would not let Sandy make anymore trades.Nothing good will happen to this organization before he is replaced,

Re: Alderson's job status. Bottom line is, he's never getting fired from Mets. Team believes (accurately IMO) he has earned right to determine how career ends. Not decided who succeeds him or when.

Is this a joke? This isn't Red Auerbach. Sandy has had 2 good seasons....

They have been discussing front line guys over the past year. They made offers for Chris Sale, Quintana, and Archer, and Fulmer. Foltynewicz has taken a huge step forward this season, In 13 starts he has only allowed more than 2 earned runs once. They appear to be arriving a year ahead of schedule but trading several top prospects for a frontline starter would be a mistake. If they were going to then DeGrom would be my top choice but I think the smart decision would be to wait for the other prospects to arrive.

Trading for Wheeler doesn't improve this team much and it blocks a higher upside prospect without the health concerns.
Trade chips?
giantsFC : 6/8/2018 9:33 am : link
Outside of degrom and Thor there is zilch that will bring a return. Degrom deserves to be an ace on a team that actually has talent and health. Thor..,he gets hurt quite often and seems like another douche distraction. I would personally be ok w trading him if they got a huge blue chip back.

This is exactly why I can't give this team my time anymore.
The "team" (Wilpons) likes anyone who deflects criticism from them
Eric on Li : 6/8/2018 10:37 am : link
in that regard Sandy is becoming a more attractive GM to them, not less. Especially since he's a dignified and respected baseball guy who writers won't assault the way they did with Omar. Sandy is the perfect good soldier for the boy king and his nepotism-preferred father.
Too many people are sleeping on what Wheeler
ZGiants98 : 6/8/2018 11:04 am : link
Is doing this year. The poor bastard missed the last 2.5 years to injury after he was finally getting his feet wet. Hes basically just coming into his own now. His walks are at a career low and his stuff is positively nasty topping at 98/99 MPH. 3.7 FIP, 1fWAR already and thats with a shaky start. If I were a contender I would definitely be following what Wheeler does over the next 6 weeks.
It really is too bad...
ZGiants98 : 6/8/2018 11:08 am : link
With Syndergaard returning this weekend the Mets have an absolutely formidable rotation again. Wheeler and Matz have filled the 3/4 spots and Vargas is resembling a 5 starter as well. With Lugo and Swarzak back the pen looks good too. Unfortunately, we just cant buy a hit. King Cespedes and his 29 AAV is off on a ranch somewhere with his horses or playing golf. What a damn waste.
sorry to miller but the Post had a great story today,
Del Shofner : 6/8/2018 11:14 am : link
but only in the print edition it appears so I can't link it, about how that Korean guy Koo who was briefly with the Mets won a Subway Series game in 2005 by hitting a double off Randy Johnson, in his second at bat in MLB, and scoring from second on a bunt when Posada left the plate to field the bunt. The details of the whole thing were really funny. The odds of it happening were less than zero.

Del Shofner : 6/8/2018 11:16 am : link
Koo being a lefty relief pitcher who was with the Mets for about a month, and had that one moment of glory.

true story, my brother got his jersey after that. No, we are not Korean.
I wouldn't want the Mets to throw in the towel yet

And I don't think trading away good young, controlled pitching is the way to do it. Wheeler is arb eligible after this season, so I think you listen, but it has to be a big prospect coming back. The thing with Wheels is he has top of the rotation stuff. He's been beset by injuries, but he's a guy that you can still win with, and still has upside as we saw what he can do in his last start. Honestly, sometimes I'm watching him and I can't believe how filthy his stuff is. He needs to be more consistent and put it all together. He may never be an ace, but I believe he has high-end #2 starter ability right now.

The guy I wouldn't mind seeing dealt at the deadline is Cespedes. At this point it should be clear that he can't be counted on, and some team may want that bat enough to get a premium prospect plus in return.

AsCab and Frazier if the deal is right, but I don't think they should force anything. They should make some room for Alonso to be called up at minimum. The guy is the future and perhaps he is just fine to skip AAA, like others have in the past. Honestly, if he tears up Vegas it's not like we learn much, because everyone hits there.

T.J. Rivera is coming back soon I think, and even though he's not a big bat, having a guy that is a contact hitter who consistently puts the ball in play, this team needs that.

One of the most memorable games I have ever attended. We sat behind a woman who was talking about how she "knew" Mantle, Dimaggio etc. Benson comes up in and on someone "Benson, go to pitching school" repeated in a monotone maybe 20 times.

They are ALREADY 7.5 games out of WC2
spike : 6/8/2018 3:39 pm : link
its only the first week of June.

We are going to be sellers again. Too bad the AL playoff teams are pretty much decided.

Only the Angels are trying to catch up to the Stros and Mariners. Every other AL team is out of it. Plenty of sellers out there.

The National league is wide open. Arizona, Colorada, LA, and SF are all within 1.5 games of eachother. In the NL East Washington and Atlanta are tied for first with Philly only 3 games back. The Central's top 3 teams are also only separated by 3 games. There will be plenty of buyers here but the return for Familia will not be anything to get too excited about.

NL West is up for grabs. DeGrom to LAA makes sense too.
Ugh
Jay on the Island : 6/8/2018 3:55 pm : link
The Nationals reportedly were in talks with the Marlins for catcher JT Realmuto. That would be a huge addition to the Nationals and would likely put them over the top in the NL East.

To the Angels? For who?? The Angels' system is still pretty weak. You laughed at my Frazier/Sheffield/+ hypothetical, but that's a damned sight better than any offer the Angels could make.

Do they have the prospects to make a deal for DeGrom? I think this would be one of those quantity over quality types of deals.

Jo Adell is a potential superstar so he'd 1000% have to be part of any deal. He's 19 years old with an .866 OPS, was recently promoted to A+. If I'm the Mets I would need Adell + Jordyn Adams to even begin the conversation. In theory the Angels have enough, it's just are they willing to give up 4-5 pieces because they don't have the proven guaranteed guy. For what it's worth Keith Law said Adell would be his 1-1 in this past draft if he were eligible. Said he's a risk with superstar upside.
the sooner the Mets take these trades

The Angles also have two of the prospects
Jay on the Island : 6/8/2018 4:10 pm : link
the Braves lost in the sanctions including the top prospect from the class Kevin Maitan. Last years 2nd round pick Griffin Canning has pitched very well this year in AA. Their system isn't great but it's significantly better than it was a year ago.

Of course it is, it's the Mets
I'm not sure if this was discussed
Jay on the Island : 6/9/2018 11:04 am : link
But the Mets 19th round selection Tommy Wilson is the son of Tom Wilson who played Biff Tannen in back to the future.
That's awesome!
