Caps look like they have a chance here to end it. Living in the DC area, it would be a boost to this place where sports comes to die...

CAPS fans aren’t that connected with Skins fans. I’m a CAPS fan and hate the skins with all my heart and their fans. CAPS fans are nothing like skins fans. Of course a lot of skins fans are celebrating here but they aren’t invested.
Good for the Caps and Ovi

I hate DC sports but the Caps I can at least tolerate if I'm not listening to their radio guy.

I'm happy for Ovechkin and Trotz.

He paid his dues. But anytime a Redskin fan is joyous - and many obviously like the Caps - it's not a good thing. But nothing would be worse than the Skins winning a Super Bowl while living down here and may it never happen while I'm above ground.

True but I think that happens during all sports playoffs for most teams in the playoffs. I also read that the Caps sold out just about every game this year so they do have a very healthy fan base. I'm happy for my friends who are Caps fans.

It's a bullshit transient bandwagon city is why. People from all over the country here for work and a bunch of them want something local to identify with.
When I lived in DC

most of the Cap Center (that's how long ago it was) was filled with other team's fans.

especially if they played a northeast team like the Bruins or Rangers.

No harm in people getting excited about the local team though when they do well. At least I don't give a shit if they do.
It's amazing the number of people here in the DC area

going apeshit over the Capitals winning the Cup last night, yet three weeks ago had no idea that Washington had a hockey team or that hockey even existing. Now they're crying in the streets.

but every time there's a Caps game the Metro is packed with people in jerseys. I think there's plenty of devoted fans.

Anyways, I'm happy for them. I don't follow hockey too closely, but I love it for the city.
There are a ton of bandwagon fans

But the Caps have a solid fan base who've endured ridiculous heartbreaks over the years. I was rooting for this team and I'm genuinely happy for my friends who've been diehard fans their entire life. Also Ovi and Backstrom deserved this.

Lots of excitement, DC going crazy with celebration. Caps have a great fan base and I'm glad my Cap friends finally got to celebrate a Cup! They had some great teams over the last dozen years or so, but just could never go the distance. It is great that #8 finally got the trophy.

Funny thing - the first thing I thought of after they won is that both the Eagles and Caps have won their first superbowl/cup. It is the year of Firsts! I wonder which Baseball team is going to pull it off?

I have never seen their barn with more opposing fans except in the old place in Landover where Philly fans would come down for the Flyers. The new place on 7th street has rocked for years. It is sold out all the time. Best venue in DC. The Caps have always had a large and loyal following. Great to see them bring home the cup.

I used to work a block away from the Cap One arena. When there is a hockey game, its crazy. There are a lot of die hard fans of the capitals. That is not to say there aren't some bandwagon ones, but every hockey game I've been to is packed and loud and everyone is into it.
When you win there are a ton of bandwagon fans.
since1925 : 6/8/2018 11:16 am : link
That includes the Giants and Rangers.

And guess what? When you win, they are all welcome on the bandwagon. It makes the party bigger and better. The more the merrier.

When I was a kid up there, we used to go to Caps games at the old Capital Center all the time, all the way up through high school in the mid to early 90's.

I wouldn't say I was a die hard Caps fan, but all of my buddies were. I'm really happy for all of them today.

Not sure when you lived there, but as a Devs fan I went to multiple Devs/Rangers/Flyers games vs them in the late 80's at the old Cap Center and the building was full of Caps fans. I took tons of abuse wearing my Devs jersey.

Those games vs. the Devils were awesome in that era. There were some pretty physical games with plenty of teams, but the matches with the Devils always seemed to go next level brutal. Those teams really didn't like each other.

No, they are actually more ignorant and worse than Redskin fans.
Complete bandwagon with a massive inferiority complex stemming from their imbecile owner.

Don't know how people who call themselves Giants fan and have to deal with DC sports fans can be happy about this.

'95 - '99, the Petr Bondra era.

I was at the 4 OT playoff game vs the Pens that Petr Nedved (?) ended. There were more Penguins fans at a playoff game in DC than Caps fans.

Put it this way, I could regularly walk up to the box office and buy tickets game day or get tickets from someone selling them there for less than face value. And I was used to Montreal Forum, Boston Garden, MSG, etc. So it was some culture shock getting used to that.

Yep that was a great era for the old Patrick Division. As a Devs fan we were mainly on the outside till '88. It was a great time to be down there hockey wise. You had the Isles/Rangers/Devs/Flyers/Caps all within a 4 hour drive total. Yea those Devs-Caps playoff games were intense. Scott Stevens was a Cap then and he had some temper i his early days. By the time he came to the Devs He had learned how to harness it but back in those days he could pile up the misconducts

ahh yes that was the last years of the Cap Center. The team was starting to go into decline, except for 1 year there they got pretty bad as I remember. If your not an original 6 or flagship type organization that tends to be the case. This past year the Devs had great attendance and lots of interest, but I'll be the first to admit when we are down interest wanes.
As a longtime Islander fan....
kinard : 6/8/2018 5:31 pm : link
... I'll never get over that Dale Hunter cheap shot to Pierre Turgeon in Game 6 of the 1993 Patrick Division semifinal. That was the last Islander team with any real hope.

What can I say? Old wounds die hard. You how Giants fans hate Brian Dawkins and the Eagles? That how Islander fans feel about Dale Hunter and the Capitals.

I'm just bitter though. Great run by the Caps and they deserved it. Oshie is easy to root for but the rest of them can stay out west for all I care.

Yep, that’s the way it was when I grew up there.
The Caps ‘fanbase’ was white trash from Waldorf and there were always more Pens/Rangers/Flyers/Wings/Bruins fans there not to mention Hawks/Habs/Sabers/Leafs fans.

When the Pens got Crosby they sold out,
When the Caps got Ovechkin NOBODY cared until 2009. That’s the DC and Caps fanbase I’ll always know.
Sadly this win legitimizes the Caps and DC sports which is why it’s wirse than the Iggles, Sox, or even a Skins title.

Thanks, arc. Been a long time coming. I was fortunate enough to be at one of the Caps 8 wins back in their inaugural season in 74-75 (that game was 10% of their season point total... think about that for a second). Seen all the multiple OT playoff losses. Seen all the 3-1 series leads that were blown. Seen all the times we were beaten by lower seeded teams. Seen all the times we faced the hot goalie. Seen all the times we hit the post. Part of me thought I would never see what I saw Thursday night. Still can’t quite believe it.

You’ve been a gentleman to me through all this arc (as have pjcas, Greg, pganut, JayB, Sonic Youth, Brett, ColHowPepper, Brett, Kyle, and others) and have treated me with class and sportsmanship over the last decade we’ve been doing this. I appreciate it very much.

Congrats again Tony

it seems like Ovie is still partying like a rock star.

I love seeing the over the top enjoyment of players like Ovie after they win a cup.

I remember the debate on here a few years ago about which one players would rather win (not fans, but players) and Olympic Gold or a Stanley Cup. I can't pick both would be life changing events, but I think it's Stanley Cup for the players.

If you live in DC maybe see if you can get in for the parade. My wife took the kids when the Bruins won (I wouldn't go as a Canadiens fan) and the kids still talk about it, and it got my youngest to play hockey (and allowed me to coach) so some positive came from it.
