NFT: Best DNA test

Boatie Warrant : 6/8/2018 2:40 pm
I never considered doing a DNA test for myself until now. I have always been paranoid that the information could be used for untended purposes (insert conspiracy theory here). But now I figure with Fathers day coming and no Idea what to tell the family what to get me I figure what the hell. Could be interesting to see how close my DNA is to what I have been told my heritage is.

What DNA tests out there are the best ones to use? Ancestry? 23andme? myheratige?

What have been your experiences?
Only guy I trust is Dr Lamar

it's not a conspiracy theory if its true

1. the FTC is investigating several of the DNA sites for selling private samples to research firms and other 3rd parties. Yes it's only an investigation at this stage but I don't think the FTC starts them haphazardly.

2. Police departments around the country are checking to see if suspects offered up their DNA to these companies as it's simple to get the DNA from them vs. getting warrants to collect from you direct.

3. I own a small business, and have been approached about offering a DNA service to my employees. I declined. One of the marketing pitches used to try to sell me was that I would know about potential illnesses and genetic conditions in my employees which could help me make decisions to save on future healthcare costs.

Personally I think genetic discrimination is an up and coming thing. Or I'm a conspiracy nut.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

This. You are signing over your DNA in perpetuity. Read the user agreements. Despite their stated commitment to privacy,
There are innumerable bad things that can and will happen with your data. Weigh that against your desire to know your history
Ancestry

Gave me a really detailed breakdown on areas of the world I knew my grandparents from both sides came from. Good percentages in the different regions of Europe that I suspected.

Also connected with a few cousins that I never meet from my grandparents siblings children.

Privacy wise, you have to gauge the importance of that to you. To me, it's not that important, I don't give it a second thought. Plus since my wife also did a DNA test, my kids now know exactly what their DNA is and never have to do the test themselves in the future.

Depends on what you mean. The % breakdown will vary from child to child, but the regions will be the same.

with your genetic code, you'd have to be crazy to give away your DNA.
Not only will they have...

your DNA, countless reports have come out with how inaccurate they are. It's a scam as far as I'm concerned.

not just a scam but potentially dangerous. I mean, for ancestry maybe it’s a cute parlor game, but the health ones, even if they were accurate, are dangerous. Largely because people don’t understand what any information ie, susceptibility potentials, gleaned actually means. You could do drastic things to your health and body based on skewed views or fear.

Good point. I was focusing on the ancestry stuff, which is bogus. But you touch on an even more important aspect of it...

Speaking strictly about the ancestry stuff, if it is a fraud how did the following happen:

* A year after I did Ancestry my brother did, and my Ancestry list was updated to show him as a close relative probably sibling. Same last name, obviously, but different state.

* 6 months aftert that, my niece did ancestry from another state using her married surnmane and my Ancestry connections was updated to add her as a close relative, possibly niece or nephew.

They give you health information on top of the ancestry stuff and area always updating it. I bought it a couple of years ago and they consistently come out with more results to add to my health profile.

I also remember for a time they stopped advertising the health portion because they had to get approved by the government first.

As far as people having your DNA. It doesn't bother me. Any doctor will tell you that DNA isn't a death sentence. They are risk factors. Just cuz you may have a genetic predisposition to a disease doesn't mean you will get it and vice versa. A lot of other factors are involved, diet, environment, etc.

with Ancestry and the results were disappointing in so far as being vague.

52% Europe West (I know it's Ireland)
22% Great Britain
26% Other regions

WTH? "26% Other regions"? That's important.

They provided enough connections that I was able to confirm likely some Finish origins. Many years ago, my father said he suspected some Scandinavian origins.

I hope their breakdowns have improved as they advertise.

most people don’t think even a little bit that far. its Freaking dangerous and imo irresponsible to use it for anything health related at all.

I dunno, Bill. I'd like to know if I had a genetic issue I'd have to keep an eye on.

Have not come across many in the NYC area.

There was a Finnish community in Brooklyn around the turn of the last century.

Most headed to the mid-west - Minn.

My Paternal Grandfather's parents came from Finland in 1898

I believe my dad had a bunch of British blood and by the time they crossed the pond, they pretty much headed to Nassau County. I believe Dad's ancestors came here prior to 1823.

I bought the wife and I kits, primarily to see (she's adopted) what a DNA analysis would show to compare with what she'd at least been told about her birth parents' backgrounds.

I was 100% confident of my lineage (50% Austrian, 25% Russian, 25% Romanian), and the Ancestry test yielded just that, so it was a good litmus test.

Hey,

Which dna site did you use? Ancestry.com?
