I posted something like this on another thread a few days ago but wanted to start my own thread to get everyone's thoughts.
I heard Shurmur used 2 TE sets in Minnesota, anyone know more specifics on what that looked like and some plays they ran?
I just really like the personnel we have for the 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB look. We can really pound the rock with SB if we like (Ellison is an excellent blocker and Engram is at least a capable blocker), but we still have our 4 most dangerous receiving weapons on the field who can all create mismatches and get open.
It's also nice because if Flowers does struggle on the right side at all we'd have a little insurance plan with lining Rhett up on the right giving some help, either staying in to protect or simply chipping the DE and then going out as a receiver.
Just seems like there's so much you can do:
-2 TEs on the left and get Barkley running downhill behind them + Solder and Hernandez. That's some power football. Then same look, go play-action and hit Engram down the seam.
-Motion out Barkley and Engram and essentially switch it to a 4 WR set. Imagine even trips right: you can throw the ball out to Shep on a WR screen and let Engram and Barkley block- they're both about 40 lbs heavier than the average CB.
-Engram split out by himself on the right in single coverage, Beckham and Shep on the left, putting Shep in the slot where he is most lethal.
-Make them think Ellison is just in there to pass-protect/run-block a few plays in a row, then boom, play action right and hit Rhett on the TE screen on the left.
... And I haven't even mentioned a play to Odell yet.
I'm just thinking with this group on the field, especially with the versatility of Engram and Barkley, defenses would constantly struggle to figure out what personnel to put out there.
What are some possibilities you can think of involving the 2 TE look?
He mentioned something to the effect of the chess game with the opposing d begins with their decision to face up with base or nickel when the Giants run 2 TE.
I found that to be interesting.
Goes without saying we can anticipate seeing that formation a bit this year. Can't wait.
No, but they have mean SOB in Rhett Ellison that loves to knock players on their ass. Too bad McAdoo had no clue how to utilize him. That and he knows Shurmer's scheme already
I think you'll see that change under schurmer
Agree, except there has been nothing in the 5+ years to even remotely support that confidence to run on 4th down...
Ahh, to dream of an O-line once again...
I think you'll see that change under schurmer
Please tell me who he used well? OBJ can be used by anyone anywhere. Again and again I’d love to know wtf he said to impress Mara so much that he was a must keep. I think we should throw the ball to Odell. BRILLIANT
When you suck a drafting (Reese and Ross) you overpay for backups and ST players.
BTW: For some reason, NFL.com has him listed as a RB!
Rhett Ellison - Running Back - ( New Window )
TE J. Adams has certainly flashed and he has the talent, IMHO to start on more than a few teams in the NFL. I see big things from him.
TE Engram is going to be one of the better receiving TE's in the league and a true mis-match for LB's and many safeties. I see Shurmur finding advantages for Engram to exploit.
I think we'll carry 3 TE's and no FB. Just a hunch. as we carry 3 QB's.
Finally, forgive my ignorance, but you can run three TE jumbo sets near a goal line and such, correct?
Pull the guards, have one TE pick off the DT and sweep the end.

Smith makes the team as FB - Shurmur stated he likes a true fb on the roster as late as last week.
Wuchu smokin?

Was thinking Ellison. EE could help lead around end and work on a CB

Do they have a 2nd TE that scares anybody?
Why would a 2nd TE in the formation have to "scare" anyone?
You do realize the 2nd TE is used primarily as a blocker and a short yardage option as the defense will think he's blocking, right?
He had a solid career for the Vikings.
LOL, very true. We are probably better off with EE and Ellison out there than whoever is the WR #3. EE can get out into routes as well as they can.
