4 Super Bowl Championships and I never could see any

of them coming in preseason. The first one was maybe the most optimistic I was of all four but the Bears, 49ers, and Redskins had great teams. The second one I remember standing in my mom's driveway in Cranford, NJ and talking football to my step-dad. I was shocked that this Giant team was 10-0, in preseason I had no clue. The two Coughlin and Eli championships came out of leftfield for me. Now there have been years where I thought, this is our year and they did not win. So tell me as honestly as you can remember, have you ever felt they were the team in preseason and been right? If so what year and why?
1986 was the one I kinda predicted going in

I remember after 85 telling my wife the Giants were gonna " do something" this year

I absolutely fel that 1990 was going to be there year.
Optimus-NY : 6/8/2018 7:02 pm : link
It was down to them and the Niners. AS the season went on, Buffalo had a shot at it, but once the Hostetler change took hold I felt the NYG were one of 3 who had a great chance.

As far as '86 was concerned, only two teams had a shot that year going into it to win it all: the Giants and the Bears. As the season went on, the Skins proved they belonged in the mix too. I still wanted to see the Giants smash the Bears back in January of 87, but it was never meant to be. With or without McMahon, the Giants would have killed them in Giants Stadium, same as they did Montana and the 69ers. Too bad we never got to see that. Once the Skins eliminated the Bears in Chicago, it was done. No chance the Skins were coming to Giants Stadium and winning. All these years later and I STILL don't know WTF Ditka was thinking playing that midget at QB in the playoffs. No wonder Richard Dent hates Ditka, lol.

07 - I thought they were going to stink...Ooops! I actually thought 08 was going to be our year. Close call (Thanks Plax!). 2011 was what I would consider a last shot. I felt we had another title in us and that was the last chance to do it. We got hot and lucky, riding the dominant play of Eli, JPP, Nicks, and Cruz.
1990

I am surprised you were surprised at the time. Lots of Super Bowl hype going into that season. Not sure what Vegas said but we might very well have been #2 on the board going into that year. Nobody expects a 10-0 start but it wasn't any great shock that they were really good.
I knew ... absolutely knew ... that 1986 was the Giants year
baadbill : 6/8/2018 8:09 pm : link
... felt that way after 1985 despite the thrashing in Chicago ... I had some doubts mid-season but Bavaro's catch/run to open the 2nd half in San Fran and Simm's 4th down completion in MN ... those two plays ... just made it a season of destiny... a culmination of steady building piece by piece, all started by what I consider to be the most important (and beneficial) play in Giant's history ... The Fumble
The problem I then had was I expected them to win every

year thereafter ... still feel they should have... they were the best team in football throughout that stretch imo
1986 and 1990 were highly visible
Jimmy Googs : 6/8/2018 9:00 pm : link
They still had to perform and get the breaks but the line of sight was clear as day. The others lesser so.

1986 was about many tough competitors but we beat them all during the regular season so,..
1990 was all about how to get past the Niners somehow and get to the big dance.
2007 to me was the least obvious but if we got past Dallas then we were rolling. Once they did I figured it was all for the taking. I made a bundle getting 14 points in the SB.
2011 was about playing anybody other than New Orleans in playoffs. We got fortunate there as to me the Saints were the only team we couldn’t beat.
I didn't know it prior to the season
Big Rick in FL : 6/8/2018 9:11 pm : link
But I knew on October 15th after the Falcons game. Best friend is an Eagles fan and we were sitting in his car before going to a car show and I said we are going to win the SB. No clue why I thought it but I was 100% sure. Seeing the players interact in the hotel and then watching us kick the Falcons ass made me think it. Just a feeling I had in my gut. It was weird.

Went to my first game that year and watched the Packers kick our ass when Eli was supposed to sit. Went to the Skins game with Ross' game saving goal line tackle. Thought ok we are better then I thought. Falcons game I just knew. Went to the Bucs game down here for the playoffs and that confirmed it. Was obviously nervous playing the Pats.

In 2011 I had no clue during the season, but once we made the SB I knew we were going to win. Maybe the only Giants game in my life I wasn't nervous.
I agree with most of what you guys are saying. Problem is most of

what your talking about happened during those seasons and re-shaped opinions. We have preseason opinions all over the charts about this years Giants. I don't think any of them can be ruled out at this point.
Had the feeling about 86 & 90
Motley Two : 6/8/2018 9:20 pm : link
but I was young and that was the era I became a fan(1984), so probably more to do with youthful optimism.

Legit had it for the 2011 season.

Chargers and my boss thought I was crazy. I just believed the Giants matched up better with the Patriots than the Chargers!
I totally agree.
Pete in MD : 6/8/2018 9:41 pm : link
In 86, nobody was beating the Bears. In 90, nobody was beating the 49ers. In 2007, the Patriots were “unbeatable.” In 2011, the team was 9-7 and barely made the playoffs. None were a sure thing.
in 1990 I figured we could just be a pain in the ass

Exactly for 2011. Avoiding the Saints was huge. When the 9ers beat them, I really thought we were going to the SB.
In preseason, the best I can say is that I was eternally optimistic
Ivan15 : 6/8/2018 11:14 pm : link
but in each of those seasons, I got the feelings that destiny and inevitability were happening.

Of course,I had the same feelings in 2008 before fate stepped in.
86 was it
Sec 103 : 6/9/2018 6:29 am : link
after the 85 loss to the Bears I just knew we were on our way. That aid the Skins poised big problems although we beat them 3 times, first time ever.

Dallas was gravy in 07. No way I thought winning in Green Bay was in the cards. Once we did, I knew we were beating the undefeated Pats
In '86, I thought we had a very good shot,
Ira : 6/9/2018 8:06 am : link
but even then, I wouldn't have predicted it.
That ‘86 Team was the one I had high hopes for......
Simms11 : 6/9/2018 9:53 am : link
They had to get that first Super Bowl and that group was just too good.

It’s hard figuring out what a team will do based on pre-season. Especially nowadays. I don’t expect too much this pre-season either as Shurmer and Bettcher will be, not only seeing who can do what, but seeing how their schemes will work. We could go 0-4 in pre-season and still have a very successful year.
Agree with others
TheMick7 : 6/9/2018 10:24 am : link
The 1986 team, after losing to the Bears in 1985,was positioned to be one of the major contenders in 1986.And,although they were very good throughout the season,it wasn't until the last few games that they became a "machine" & I felt that they were the class of the league going into the playoffs! And,they proved it (although the first half of XXI made me drunk going into the the second half, which I continued drinking, but this time in celebration!).
1990 team i was confident in preseason
micky : 6/9/2018 10:25 am : link
only from what happened to them in their last game the season before

The "Flipper Game"..i remember walking through parking lot after that game and looking back at the stadium and saying to my friend: "They are winning the whole damn thing next year..watch"
I felt the '86 team
Doomster : 6/9/2018 11:23 am : link
was on a mission after the loss to the Bears the previous year in the playoffs....

Even LT said, after that loss, we knew we had to raise our level of play even more, and they did....
I never had a clue with either of Eli's wins

But, that team 85, 86 - you could tell they were in the elite of the league.
86 was probably the only time
djm : 6/9/2018 9:30 pm : link
I felt great along with most and the team still won it all. Once they beat Minnesota 4th and 17 I was pretty damn confident. 90 I felt very good, but the niners really scared me. Honestly Philly did too..... after week 1 win over Philly I probably knew we’d win the division and it was niners or bust. Until the roger Craig fumble and LT recovery, I really don’t think I truly believed the giants would beat that niner team out there in SF. Knew they’d battle to the final gun but I was in awe of Montana...

07 felt good... kept saying just keep making the postseason and maybe one year we get lucky and break through. But that still shocked me and everyone else no matter how confident you were. Same with 11 but I had a sneaky good feeling all year that season.

08 I knew the giants would dominate I had absolutely no doubt. Felt really good early on in 2009-2010-2012 as well. The 2010 team wasn’t weak at all, just insanely stupid and error prone. 09 and 12 teams were just weak they fooled me early.
I did not feel bad last summer
djm : 6/9/2018 9:32 pm : link
Felt good, but had a scary bad feeling as the season drew near. I tried defending the Pre season struggles but I think I knew the offense was going to blow. Cautiously hoped the D would carry the day for a while... no.

As great a legacy as Parcells has with the Giants, it is often overlooked that the team from 86 to 90, was by many a countsythe best team in football.

I agree with the sentiment that they maybe should have won another.

I can honestly say
DonnieD89 : 6/10/2018 10:40 am : link
the 1986 and 1990 SBs were expected given relatively similar personnel. The 2007 and 2011 where not expected; however, I thought the 2008 team was unstoppable until Plaxico literally and figuratively shot the season down.
