- OK, I know it was the horse that had to actually run the race, but this guy is pretty cool. He stays in great shape, is riding into his 50s, and just won the biggest prize that the sport has to offer. Thumbs up to him.

There really isn't anything on the track he hasn't accomplished. And his resume is as good as any jockey in history.
I haven't followed any coverage but watched the race. It jumped out at me that a Baffert horse sprinted into second and seemed there to hold off other horses. They finished 8th of 10.
Maybe it was just a coincidence, I have no idea how they normally run.

Mostly coincidence. Restoring Hope is a horse that likes to run up front or near the pace. Geroux, the jockey, sort of lost control of the horse, and steered him outside versus the rail or right behind Justify. I genuinely think Baffert thought the horse could pick up a share of the money by finishing second or third...
He's a real good horse and would have been a legit threat.
