NFT: Mike Smith - the 52 year old Triple Crown winning jockey

Del Shofner : 6/11/2018 12:12 am
- OK, I know it was the horse that had to actually run the race, but this guy is pretty cool. He stays in great shape, is riding into his 50s, and just won the biggest prize that the sport has to offer. Thumbs up to him.

(Just watched him being interviewed on NBC.)
Smitty has been a great jockey for a long, long time...

He has the most Breeders' Cup wins in history with 26. The next most is 15.

There really isn't anything on the track he hasn't accomplished. And his resume is as good as any jockey in history.

he dated Chantal Sutherland. Not a bad life Mr. Smith
Great jockey, great guy

My enduring image of him is sitting on Zenyatta after she lost her final race in the BC Classic to Blame, Barbara Howard riding up to him, and he was in tears, said he couldn't talk, felt like he let her down, her only loss...
There is some discussion there was some cheating involved

with the second horse owned by the same owner, blocking ala NASCAR, in order for Justify to get the win.

I haven't followed any coverage but watched the race. It jumped out at me that a Baffert horse sprinted into second and seemed there to hold off other horses. They finished 8th of 10.

Maybe it was just a coincidence, I have no idea how they normally run.

Mostly coincidence. Restoring Hope is a horse that likes to run up front or near the pace. Geroux, the jockey, sort of lost control of the horse, and steered him outside versus the rail or right behind Justify. I genuinely think Baffert thought the horse could pick up a share of the money by finishing second or third...
There was no cheating in the race

Repole and West sound like babies. Geroux is a world class jockey and gave an honest assertion of the race.
As I mentioned on another Belmont thread...

the real story was not running Audible, who is owned by the same group who owns Justify.

He's a real good horse and would have been a legit threat.
