NFT: Career advice needed!

GMEN27 : 6/11/2018 1:16 pm
Hi BBI!

I need some advice and I hoping some of your BBI’ers can shine some light on my situation. I currently work in tax with one of the big 4 and I HATE IT. The work is whatever, the people I work with are pretty cool but the quality of life might be making me depressed.

I want to move to private and at the same time transition out of tax. I don’t patrically like working in tax and I feel any place I go to will have a miserable busy season if I stay in tax.

With my background being all tax I am having trouble finding non tax positions (I’d be open to a tax position if it wasn’t compliance). I was wondering if anyone has been in this situation and can give some advice on a way out!

I have about 5 years experience (all in tax), masters degree in accounting and do not have my CPA.

Thanks in advance for any help!
I don't recruit Accounting and Finance, but

that is the bread and butter of my firm. I can get your resume in front of the right person.
I don’t have any direct advice for your profession

but hating your job is a fucking life drain. I did it for a few years and it was an awful experience. I switched industries and now I’m much happier and find the work way more fulfilling. So yeah, do something you like.

That would be great. We can exchange emails, but I’ve been talking to recruiters for a few weeks now and they basically tell me it’s tax or nothing.
You can look into corporate function Internal Audit

Particularly as a Financial/Operational Auditor. Your Big 4 experience, education, and any certifications you may have will be helpful.

Most Internal Audit jobs pay well and provide good work/life balance. Please feel free to pick my brain if you'd like any additional information on the career.
Since that is your area a expertise

have you considered going it alone? Even though it would still be tax you may find being an entrepreneur more fun, challenging and rewarding. My CPA is a great guy who has himself a small office with low overhead but because he really knows his stuff does a lot of business with local small businesses. Seems like he has it pretty good and enjoys what he does and it is nothing like some stuffy corp gig. He is very laid back and I'm guessing does quite well for himself financially.
Start your own accounting firm
DennyInDenville : 6/11/2018 1:34 pm : link
Advertise online and become a "floater" a while offering premium day to day accounting

Lots of money and independence, lots of hard work, marketing also

It's the future of all work imo, contracts, and you can build up a really nice trustworthy portfolio of different clients as well during that time to diversify your resume in ways.

Idk though. Good luck to you on your transition and search. You are doing the right thing no matter what.

graduated college in accounting around 1962. He spent a few years in corporate then private accounting. He hated it.

He then tried his hand at sales (office furniture) and eventually became a millionaire.

Keep your mind open. You will find something you like.
You;'ll still have a

I'd assume because headhunters aren't required for entry level positions. There is absolutely no way you are pigeonholed into one job for the rest of your life after five years of working. Start pulling random job openings and see what skills they're looking for that you have. You should be able to spin your tax-skills into things they are looking for at other positions.
My company was

named Top 10 in executive recruitment in January of this year by Crains New York Business, and we are listed in the Hunt Scanlon Power 60.

Not sure who else you are working with, but I can definitely get you in front of the right person to help you.
Thanks

Audit, tax they are all brutal and if you don't have a CPA you really shouldn't be in those fields.. there are tons of other jobs out there in IA as someone has stated.. but if you don't plan on getting a CPA, quit tax, and don't do public accounting.. you'll keep doing grunt work and never get rewarded..

The first thing I use to tell interns when we still had them was get your CPA exams done.. in this field its the most important thing.. once you have it.. you can move around and try many things.. that would be my first advise to you..
I just sent you an email.

Not to hijack your thread but does your company do much in commercial real estate?

What kind of position are you looking for? My focus in General Contracting and Mechanical Contracting. I work with a few commercial real estate companies that do their own construction.

This what my wife did , worked for KPMG now doing Internal Audit. As she has said anything is better than tax.

I could certainly see if someone in the office has the kind of position you are looking for.

Bank Regulators often look for Accountants. It'd be different work. The money is decent enough (though it will be less), the benefits are fantastic and work-life balance is as good as it gets. Look at the OCC, The Fed, anything within the Treasury Department, if this is something that intrigues you. It'd be much different work, but, it sounds like that may be what you are looking for. Look at USAjobs.gov. Or PM me and we can exchange emails.

IRS & CFPB are probably places to avoid ATM.
