I�d really love to see them trade for and extend Karlsson now.

I think he�s easily the best D in the league, and I�d rather not run the risk that he gets traded somewhere else, likes it there, and extends without NYR ever getting a swing at it in FA.

You can still �rebuild� for 1-2 years...we have proof that an EK lead team can still tank/suck. Coming out of the rebuild, you still have 7-8 years of the best D-man under your belt.

It�s obviously a real long shot, but this is a player that I�d stray from the plan a little bit for.

(and then you'd need to extend him) I mean he's not small by today's standards, but he definitely makes his name with his skating and his offense and having feet/ankle issues as a puck moving defenseman would scare me, if not immediately, likely by the later years of that contract.

FWIW, Ottawa proposed an extension to Karlsson. Given the state of their team I think they might be better off dealing him to the highest bidder.

Ottawa has allowed him and his agent to talk extension with other clubs.

that's less than the price for Ryan O'Reilly, who has a terrible contract IMO.

Without Ryan, I think you're looking at least a non-protected 1st, Chytil or Anderson and then maybe an established player in their low 20's.

I think the JT situation maybe influences OTT to move Karlsson at some point, if not off-season then definitely by the deadline. But I think he's moved in the off-season.

seems like the Blues viewed the ROR contract as a plus. 5 years that takes him to age 31.

Player valuations in all sports are subjective, but it seems especially pronounced in hockey where so many teams are in awful shape economically.

Moreso than other sports, NHL GMs seem terrified of losing the bing plusr in FA, especially if they need to give up assets to get the player.

I really don�t know how many offseason buyers there are for EK. Holding him to the deadline probably increases the market a ton, but OTT seems intent to trade him now.

Reportedly Karlsson is looking for an 8 year 11M AAV contract too (which I think is around what Doughty got)

Lou needs to do what ever he can to bring EK to NYI. I really dont see this as being a knee jerk reaction to losing JT but something that could reset this franchise substantially. I understand the injury concerns but he came back strong last year and returned to top form later in the year. At this moment you can make a strong argument that he is best in the game, they need to make this happen.

Obviously depends on assets we give up but IMO the inclusion of bobby ryan's contract should not be deal breaker. They have the cap space and he could be a classic "buy-low" type pick up that could thrive under HOF management. Also after year 1 that contract becomes a bit more manageable if they need to buy him out or dump him off to someone else while eating money.

seems like ottawa has become the "islanders north" with the organization dysfunctional, it would be soo satisfying to be on the other end of that mess just one time, especially after losing JT for nothing.

Yeah I am right there with you then, just have to keep the BS meter on full alert. One guy ive noticed that might b a step ahead this off season is Pagnotta of 4th period.

Islanders have the cap space in the future to meet his salary demands, but he would have to play for the Islanders. It seems like after Tajudas left, the Islanders are loading up on PK/defensive specialists and will try to shut down the neutral zone. Similar to schemes Barry Trotz has run before, there will be one or two scoring lines and a bunch of interchangable parts on lines 3 and 4

i think that might have been the plan w/ or w/o JT. Isles were laughably bad on defensive, on the PK and giving up way to many shots. Their forward group contributed absolutelty nothing in their own end, with those signing and trotz coaching, i am very excited to not giving up 300 goals again this year.

also I understand this doesn't take into account the trickle down effect JT had but looking strictly at his goal production, isles would still have been top 10 in scoring without him. they need to strike a balance somewhere.

for Pacioretty and the Canadiens won't trade him in the off-season just to trade him.

They still believe with Price, Weber, Patches, Drouin, and others healthy they can contend (not sure i agree though, the Atlantic is a tough division now).

they need to get better IMO to deal him (at least that's what they say publicly until some GM gets Bergevin to bend over).

I don't think Karlsson is distracting from Max, I think guys moving like Neal, Hoffman, Perron, Riley Nash, etc. (and I think Max is better than them) are why Max hasn't moved.

I read the Penguins need to send salary back just to fit on the cap or Habs need to eat some of Max's salary.

Max had a down 2018, but he's one of the more underrated players in the game.

Sorokin won't be here for another 2 years. He just signed a 3 year deal last year in the KHL and he would have to pay out of pocket to break it.

Max is two years older, and doesn't play C, so there's a positional adjustment, and while I don't think this tells the whole story, it speaks a little to how underrated Max is, and that's with an awful 2017-2018. I don't mind trading him, but I would not give him away.

I'd think if TB can give up Sergachev, Johnson and a 1st for an extended Karlsson they'd be cup favorites until the lockout at least.

They have Callahan off the books after next year, but would need to extend Kucherov after this year, that could be tricky.

Thats the package I want as an Ottawa fan, with an additional prospect like Foote or Cirelli or Raddish.

I really would love Point, but I know that's not happening. Sergachev, Johnson, Foote, 1st. I would think that is a win-win for everybody (except Sergachev and Johnson lol).
