Ok, now that the playoffs are over and Ovi is in day 5 of a summer long bender figured maybe worth starting draft thread and one for off-season rumors.
I'll start with Brian Wilde's final top 15. I think all of these guy are legit blue-chip prospects.
I disagree with the order, but IMO they're all legit.
Brian Wilde's top 15 prospects.

They love Kotkaniemi in MTL and he writes for recrutes, so he is higher here (justifiably) than some places.
If the Rangers drafted Dobson there I'd say you have a top pair RD to pair with Skjei.
Not Dahlin or Hughes as a skater, but he's got a cannon shot, good size, is a rock defensively and has offensive skill - reminds of a little of Roman Josi.
but this is a ranking not a mock draft. It won't fall this way.
Also found this gem, Kovalchuk is apparently asking for or is expected to get $8M per season? Good luck, whoever signs him at that $$ deserves it if he's awful.

Ilya Kovalchuk...a 35-year-old who has played 32 career NHL playoff games....is going to get what.....$8M per? No thanks.

Habs getting Plekanec and Leafs getting Tavares is like when Bart's team got Milhouse and Ralph's team got Ken Griffey, Jr.
that happened in the same episode
Either way, he nailed it.
Yep, me too. I would much rather both MSG teams just completely sucked and tanked for draft positioning.
Of course, I won't root for that from the onset of the season - I'll hope they surprise and play well, but being realistic, this team won't be any good and it'll be in our best interest to just be bad. Gotta go down to go up.
But their D is suspect.
I liked what Pionk showed in the World Cup, and I like Skjei, Shattenkirk I've made my thoughts known about - after that a lot of questions.
I think they will be fighting for the 8th playoff spot or may miss the playoffs, but they won't be Ottawa bad (esp if OTT loses Karlsson).
No UFA's of note left (and Hertl wasn't one anyway). Rick Nash? Apparently contemplating retirement.
Maybe CdH if you consider him a notable UFA>
looks like trade time.
Karlsson, Skinner, Patches, etc.
I think hes easily the best D in the league, and Id rather not run the risk that he gets traded somewhere else, likes it there, and extends without NYR ever getting a swing at it in FA.
You can still rebuild for 1-2 years...we have proof that an EK lead team can still tank/suck. Coming out of the rebuild, you still have 7-8 years of the best D-man under your belt.
Its obviously a real long shot, but this is a player that Id stray from the plan a little bit for.
FWIW, Ottawa proposed an extension to Karlsson. Given the state of their team I think they might be better off dealing him to the highest bidder.
Ottawa has allowed him and his agent to talk extension with other clubs.
Without doing that, though....maybe a lottery-protected 1st, Hayes, DeAngelo, and a prospect or two not named Chytil/Andersson/Kravtsov?
Hard to size up the market. Not a ton of teams in contention with a lot of cap space.

that's less than the price for Ryan O'Reilly, who has a terrible contract IMO.
Without Ryan, I think you're looking at least a non-protected 1st, Chytil or Anderson and then maybe an established player in their low 20's.
Deangelo is garbage
If you take Ryan I think it maybe lessens the current player, not the prospect.
but...I struggle, like most fans, to see how other teams value their players and what they'd accept in a trade.
I think the JT situation maybe influences OTT to move Karlsson at some point, if not off-season then definitely by the deadline. But I think he's moved in the off-season.
Player valuations in all sports are subjective, but it seems especially pronounced in hockey where so many teams are in awful shape economically.
Moreso than other sports, NHL GMs seem terrified of losing the bing plusr in FA, especially if they need to give up assets to get the player.
I really dont know how many offseason buyers there are for EK. Holding him to the deadline probably increases the market a ton, but OTT seems intent to trade him now.
Reportedly Karlsson is looking for an 8 year 11M AAV contract too (which I think is around what Doughty got)
Wouldnt mind seeing them use their cap to take on a contract (Bobby Ryan?) as a third participant in the deal, if it brings back worthwhile assets.
They'd need to deal someone I think (Tyler Johnson had been rumored to be moving if they signed JT).
Obviously depends on assets we give up but IMO the inclusion of bobby ryan's contract should not be deal breaker. They have the cap space and he could be a classic "buy-low" type pick up that could thrive under HOF management. Also after year 1 that contract becomes a bit more manageable if they need to buy him out or dump him off to someone else while eating money.
seems like ottawa has become the "islanders north" with the organization dysfunctional, it would be soo satisfying to be on the other end of that mess just one time, especially after losing JT for nothing.

I trust Elliott Friedman the most, but I generally follow Canadiens beat guys from recruites like Grant McCagg, Brian Wilde, Blaine Potvin, the guys from the 4th period are good and McKenzie still breaks some stuff.
I follow all of them on twitter though, even guys like Rosen, Lebrun, Custance, etc. It's easy on twitter to follow everyone.
Still see a lot shit thrown against the wall though.
NYI one of the teams I've read in on Karlsson.

Yeah I am right there with you then, just have to keep the BS meter on full alert. One guy ive noticed that might b a step ahead this off season is Pagnotta of 4th period.
all quiet on the pacioretty front tho, do you think that picks back up after EK gets moved or are you guys done?

Islanders have the cap space in the future to meet his salary demands, but he would have to play for the Islanders. It seems like after Tajudas left, the Islanders are loading up on PK/defensive specialists and will try to shut down the neutral zone. Similar to schemes Barry Trotz has run before, there will be one or two scoring lines and a bunch of interchangable parts on lines 3 and 4
also I understand this doesn't take into account the trickle down effect JT had but looking strictly at his goal production, isles would still have been top 10 in scoring without him. they need to strike a balance somewhere.
They still believe with Price, Weber, Patches, Drouin, and others healthy they can contend (not sure i agree though, the Atlantic is a tough division now).
they need to get better IMO to deal him (at least that's what they say publicly until some GM gets Bergevin to bend over).
I don't think Karlsson is distracting from Max, I think guys moving like Neal, Hoffman, Perron, Riley Nash, etc. (and I think Max is better than them) are why Max hasn't moved.
market is drying up, the deadline might be better.
A bit different now that they make ~$10m combined
2024?
Maybe. This is not a guy I trust, but it's not that far fetched, if they deal Kessel.
But why deal Kessel only to replace him with Pacioretty? Different players, but seems like Kessel has a niche there.

@Trege33
Looks like the @penguins are interested in Pacioretty 🤷♂️ but we have heard this story before #Habs @HabsUnfiltered @AllHabs #GoHabsGo #CH

Lots of grit though!
Awful.
Cornering the market on overpaid and over termed bottom 6ers.
Newsflash, guys who throw their bodies around recklessly don't age well. All 3 of them are toast.
Go with kids.

Islanders have a combined cap hit of $20M this season wrapped up in:
Leo Komarov
Andrew Ladd
Cal Clutterbuck
Casey Cizikas
Valterri Filppula
Matt Marin
Watch them get Dehaan now

Per NHL source that #isles are pushing hard for Karlsson: "If this (Karlsson) doesnt happen it will be completely due to him wanting to play somewhere else. It wont be being outbid OR not giving enough in trade."

Sounds like Islanders close on Robin Lehner.

I hate the Pens system so if it's not for Sprong or Guentzel + maybe Aston-reese and a 1st it's a bad deal.
I read the Penguins need to send salary back just to fit on the cap or Habs need to eat some of Max's salary.
Not sure I could stomach eating Max's salary (pun intended), dealing him, and getting shit back
Max had a down 2018, but he's one of the more underrated players in the game.
Hate him. Always on the list of breakout candidate goalies, never breaks out.
Hate him. Always on the list of breakout candidate goalies, never breaks out.
Nice, he's a lunatic. If they're gonna tank, at least be entertaining.
Best part is it's just 1 year. Never pay non elite goalies term. Hopefully they get Sorokin over here next year.
Sorokin won't be here for another 2 years. He just signed a 3 year deal last year in the KHL and he would have to pay out of pocket to break it.
So they're fine overpaying bottom 6 plugs in money and term, but they'll let a good 27 year old second pair dman walk over 500k. Sweet.
I think he meant impactful, not implicated otherwise it's some Canadian use of implicated.
Andrew Zadarnowski
@AZadarski
I'm bracing myself for the replies to this, but Tavares is not that much better than Pacioretty over the past six seasons. Even-strength goals are pretty much even, as is their goal rate. Tavares is a much better playmaker, but Pacioretty is a much more implicated player. #Habs
possibly be out of contention by the time he returns if they start like last year.
Hung up on Miro Heiskanen (Stars 2017 1st round pick (#3 overall), love this kid.
But if I was the Stars I'd trade him for Karlsson if I could work out an extension for Karlsson.
Senators fans should be praying for this, might be the best player they get back for him (plus picks and other players I imagine).
Tampa actually has great assets for a Karlsson trade, but Yzerman has a long history of sticking it to us. We'd likely get a bunch of B prospects and a cap dump.

So many prospects I like in TB.
If they can get Brayden Point, Cireli, Raddysh, I wonder if they get Sergachev.
That would be a kick in the nuts to the Habs to have OTT get Sergachev.
But Hedman, Karlsson, & McDonagh might be the best defensive top three trio in my recent memory.
May be worth parting with Sergachev for, but if they keep Sergachev holy shit, that's some deep D to go with a potent O and solid + goalie.
NHL version of a super team. I thought so if they got Tavares, and I think so still if they get Karlsson.
They must need to unload salary though. Tyler Johnson?

definitely. Actually, Cody Glass and a few others from Vegas is still my favorite package but sadly... today Tampa seems to be the favorite.

I read somewhere the package from Tampa was looking like Tyler Johnson, Sergachev and a 1st.
Can't remember where, probably reddit or twitter but take it with a grain of salt
They have Callahan off the books after next year, but would need to extend Kucherov after this year, that could be tricky.

I really would love Point, but I know that's not happening. Sergachev, Johnson, Foote, 1st. I would think that is a win-win for everybody (except Sergachev and Johnson lol).
Not sure who the teams are.

Czech born center Jan Kovar (one of the top scorers in the KHL over the last several years) has received multiple offers from NHL teams. He will be making a decision soon. Some video of this dynamic player here-
