Giants coach Pat Shurmur said Odell Beckham (ankle) has been "cleared to practice."
Beckham did not participate in team drills on Tuesday, and the coach declined to say if he will get in any team work this week. He did participate in individual work, however, and even took some walkthrough snaps. Still without a long-term deal, it does not make sense for Beckham to risk his health during a practice in June.
If I'm the Giants, I'm telling him to show up, keep your mouth shut and prove you are healthy and the money will follow. OBJ is doing just that, so I expect the money to come soon. Once it does, OBJ goes back to doing his thing.
one of the most underrated catches I've ever seen. The degree of difficulty, especially in today's NFL where they slow-mo the catch to death to see if it touched the ground, was extremely high. Its a notch or two below the dallas catch, yet we never hear about it.
No new contract no practice, would be the prudent course of action
If I were an athlete as talented as him, it s what I d do.
Obviously we are still evaluating how much he has lost because of the injury. We are not going to spend a fortune on a smallish WR based on what he did before his injury. Which was an all world performance. This is a show me now league.
he broke his ankle, an injury that would be worse for a bigger person anyway. The Giants are going to evaluate him plenty, just because you as a fan don’t see him in a game before his contract (if that’s what happens) doesn’t mean it was a stupid move.
Keith....havent you been saying the money is coming "any day now" Â
he's now "smallish" when that hasn't prevented him in any way from being a top 3 WR. Going into a contract situation actively looking for a way to lessen the value of the player is pretty dishonest.
RE: It's extremely convenient that when it comes time to talk money Â

Maybe but think that is how the game is played. DG will make that call.
Mac didn't, and was counting on OBj right up to game time against Dallas....and the offense just could not cope for life without OBj.....
We have no idea what OBj is asking.....but if he is adamant about qb money, then there is a good chance, he may refuse to practice, or play in preseason games....since he is under contract and "cleared" to play, does the $30K a day come in to play here?

No idea why anyone bothers wasting their time critiquing his “QB money” comment. People take soundbites way too seriously.

I'm pretty sure even if Odell was 6'5" that it would be posited that we shouldn't spend a fortune on a tall WR who will keep putting stress on his lower legs.
but it does make sense that the less ideal a player's body size is (no matter what position), the more something else has to make up for it.
that said, in a no/low contact, less than game speed practice, I doubt you're going to tell much about whether OBJ has lost anything, unless he's lost it big time.
I can just point to guys like Julio Jones and Dez Bryant who are bigger and both had major foot injuries, and in Dez’s case it ruined his career. Being bigger at WR doesn’t guarantee health...at all.
Might say even dumber shit than Denny and others. Thing is, he is not a troll or a dupe. He's just stupid and posts frequently enough that its more than just a one off.

LOL clown. Get a life and FU too.
The biggest mythical common wisdom is "Big = less injury prone" Â
The two biggest position players in the league are Ben Roethlisberger and Gronk, and both of them are constantly hurt. Gronk is probably 30% metal at this point. Julio Jones has never not been dealing with foot injuries.
I think that if he hadn't gotten the ankle injury Â
he would have had a new contract by now. Makes sense for the Giants to see him in action first before committing to him. I expect it will happen before Week 1.
When a small player loses speed and/or quickness, they can't rely on their size to make plays. If a taller player loses their speed/quickness, they can still add value.
That being said, Odell isn't losing anything. This is an injury that he's expected to come back to 100%. There's no reason why he shouldn't and as soon as he proves that he is, he's gonna get paid.
-Odell has had the best start to his career than any other WR in the history of football, although an argument could be made for Randy Moss. At worst, he's right on par with Randy Moss who is a HOF WR.
-Odell wanted a new deal last year and ownership made it clear that they want Odell around for a long time and his contract will come(I think they even alluded to the contract coming this year).
-He played last year on that rookie deal despite wanting a new deal and he went down in preseason. Odell tried to play through a bad ankle injury and unfortunately the job was finished early in the season.
-Now he has 1 year left at 8.5M and he sees Mike Evans get a rather large extension and guys around the league that aren't even close to his talent getting $15M-$20M deals. Is he really out of line for wanting a new contract????
-The Giants, rightfully so, want to make sure he's healthy before committing major money and want him to show up and practice and show some maturity. Odell came to OTA's, came to mandatory and was cleared by the doctors and despite the press dying to write about Odell, he's given them nothing.
-The next step is to practice with the team, light everyone up like he always does and the money will come. Odell should and will get paid this offseason, IMO. Chris Mara mentioned that they are talking to Odells people as we speak to work out a deal. Its gonna happen.

I tell him to enjoy sitting out then. A fair resolution would be for OBJ to do what he is doing right now. Prove you are healthy and you can dominate like you have the first 3 years of your career. If so, the contract will come.
If I am OBJ, I tell them that I will prove my health, but if no new deal by training camp, expect me to hold out.

What exactly is the right thing? I can list quite a few players who got seriously hurt during practices. Just recently - Sean Lee, Kelvin Benjamin, Teddy Bridgewater, Jeremy Maclin, Dante Fowler, etc.
There is no reason to take that risk...
As a fan, I’d have zero problem with him sitting out Â
The smart move for him would definitely be to basically avoid any situation he could potentially get hurt until he has a new deal.
But if he does that, the vultures all come out and drone on and on about how selfish he is and how much of a diva he is.
I think he's making a point to be a part of the team as much as humanly possible and be a good soldier, even if it's slightly risky for him to do so.
Obviously no one should make career decisions based on what the stupid fucking media wants to create a storm over - but the guy has been a constant target almost regardless of what he does. And what he's doing now means providing the least amount of ammo for any of his detractors, which is keeping camp about the team rather than him - which I applaud.
Odell seems to be getting it now and I think the Giants will get this thing done sooner than later so that he can be a full participant when full training camp opens up.
I bet he has a new deal by August.
It's far easier to talk about what the right thing to do is Â
When you don't have any skin in the game. If he steps on a divot in the practice turf and Steve Smiths his knee, his career is effectively over. Nobody here would risk a career worth of salary as a top 3 player just to be perceived as a good team guy.

Whatever his reason is or isn't, he's taking that risk when he doesn't necessarily need to is my point. And it wouldn't surprise me if part of the reasoning is to avoid the backlash he caught from skipping OTA's last year and the fucking media shitstorm that created.
I think Odell should do what's in his own best interest. I think it's great that he's here and participating even just a little bit - but if I were him, I doubt I'd even risk it at all.

All guys not even showing up at their mandatory minicamps.
Beckham has just as much incentive (if not more than some) to do the same, but he's here and has not said a word.
Must be a tough time for the guys around here who are looking for a reason to kill him at every turn because he's giving you nothing these days.

Sad thing is they don't need a reason to complain...
