NFT: Wifi Thermostats

EliIsEliteX2 : 6/12/2018 2:42 pm
Hey BBI - I am looking to replace my current thermostats for Wifi models that can be controlled remotely. Does anyone have any model recommendations? The Nest looks very cool but is it worth the extra money? Any advice would be extremely helpful!
Make sure your wiring will support them

Your system may not be compatible.

Personally I think a standard programmable thermostat has all the functionality I need

check your current thermostat setup. Many of the WiFi ones require the C wire which wasn't required for older thermosts and it may be difficult to route an extra wire between the thermostat and your furnace.

If so, Ecobee has an adaptor that allows their system to work without it and its a solid WiFi thermostat in and of itself.

or when your halfway around the world and forget to shut off your AC

Or when you want the Chinese or Russians to control it for you.

The Chinese are surprisingly accommodating....The Russians are just assholes

Your electrical company will install NEST for free at your house. I know my parents just had this done. I'm not sure about the east coast.
If you want

the thermostat to basically learn your habits then the Next is great. If you want something that you can easily program and control yourself from your phone, computer, tablet etc then I would recommend the Ecobee.

I have a 4 wire set up (no C wire ....), got a SENSI, from Emerson.

The best part is that I can adjust temperature when we're on the road.

I like my Nest products,

but I agree with others that you need to make sure you have a compatible system.
Even a basic Honeywell will do

But just be prepared. Once you get sucked into home automation, it gets expensive quick. But well worth it!!!
Honeywell

We have the Honeywell’s all around the house and they’re great. Run em from the phone which is nice. But they’re a few steps behind the Nest.
Nest is great

Control the thermostat from your phone while you lie in bed. The ultimate in lazy.
