All These TEs

Samiam : 6/12/2018 10:52 pm
I think there are now 7 on the roster with 2 locks to make the team. I don’t know any of the names beyond the top 2 plus Adams. What I’m wondering is if they are trying to accomplish 3 things. First, are they looking for a monster blocker? Are they looking for a TE who can catch some but block like an OL. As much as the OL is better than last year, it still could use an upgrade in the running game and that upgrade could come from
better blocking at the TE position (and at WR also). Second, they might be looking at a TE who could outplay the FB or be an H back. A player who can play 2 positions is more valuable than playing 1 position. Smith is only a FB. Last, maybe one of the TEs can upgrade the
special teams. Backup TEs have to play specials and having a few who can excel will go a long way to making the hteam,

Does anybody know why we keep bringing in so many TEs?
It's a fair question

but they're paying a lot of money for Rhett Ellison and he's an accomplished blocker. I don't look at blocking TE as a need that would justify all the looks at different TEs.
The HC, who likes TEs, is looking for the best 4 players. One may end

up on the practice squad. He also likes to use a FB so add Smith into your head count.

4 players: Engram, Ellison and 2 guys who can run block, pass block and catch passes. If one of them also can carry the football, he may have the advantage.
I also wondered about that. I assume that we're gonna play a lot

of two-TE sets, and we need 3 or 4 on the roster given that. If we go with 4 TEs, we'd likely carry one less WR than normal to accommodate that.
It really isn't all that strange....

we've had a similar number of TE's on the roster at points in year's past. I think last year at this time we had 6 on the roster and three years ago we may have even had 7 for minicamp. Most of the time, they are quickly rotated out, even well before late July.

Right now it looks like 2 TE sets put the best personel on hte field. Engram is more of a threat than any of the #3 WR possibilities and leaves Ellison as an in-line TE who is a blocker but can receive as well. Add Barkley out of the backfield and damn I hope the OL can block becasue this can be a potent offense if they do.
I think the OP pretty much answered his own questions.

One more thing: IF, and it's a big if, the Giants plan on using three TEs on running plays, then you really need four TEs on the team in case of injury.
It can be a potent offiense but it won't be "the greastes show on turf

Hopefully, control the clock and keep moving the ball forward.

I see a lot of 24-10 and 27-14 games in the future. I don't see a lot of 30 point games for this offense unless the defense also creates a lot of turnovers and short-field TDs.

That works for me, however.
TE are big and easy targets

Eli's accuracy issues are mitigated by tight ends. We sacrifice speed on the outside, but when your QB has arm strength and accuracy issues, tight end is the best security bank.

1. But with Engram you gain speed on the inside.

2. Arm strength and accuracy issues. Well maybe a decent offensive line will bolster the Giants' Christian Hackenberg's game.
Really?

You see a lot of games where this defense holds teams to 10-14 points?
If youask me, our TEs will be Rhett Ellison, Engram and J. Adams for

sure, they are locks unless injuries hit.

If we do end up carrying a true FB, and the early word is that Shurmur likes a FB, the most likely candidate is S. Smith. That is four roster spots out of 53. Maybe we carry 5 wideouts on the active roster and 2 on the PS?

This will be an interesting summer.....

I don't think Jerrell Adams is a lock; he's been a fringe player and could lose his job to some other team's camp cuts unless he plays well in August.
