They could choose the Rose Bowl again as well. Poor Morocco had to deal with the fact that N. America had the infrastructure to host the Cup tomorrow if need be. The financial benefit was something like double/triple to host here than in N. Africa.

Why doesn't NYC make sense? They've got a new-ish stadium, a set of very densely populated cities within a few hours drive, and international airports that are quickly accessible from Europe.

Would there be something to the West Coast soccer-wise that makes it a more ideal location for the final?

I'm sure the conductors are getting paid for the whole time so how expensive can it be to keep them running.

Hopefully, I can explain it. Say you have a half that is 45 minutes long. The lower numbers (closer to 0) mean that the half is closer to the beginning, while the higher numbers (closer to 45) meant that the half is closer to the end. When the numbers hit 45, then technically the half is over, except, that in Soccer, unlike other sports, they do not stop the clock when there is a halt in play (injuries mostly, but you can think of it as like a time out in football). The clock keep going, so that in order to get the full amount of time (45 minutes in this example) you need to put that additional time in at the end of the half. Thus, the clock can keep going beyond 45. That's how clocks that count up work. It;s not too dissimilar to a clock in your house which starts at midnight and then goes 1...2...3...etc, rather than the reverse.

As an aside, it would be difficult to have the clock count downward from 45 because then when you to to 0, stoppage time would make you go into negative numbers and think of the math struggles you wold have with that.

this was a concession the US soccer federation made. the CUP is adding 14 teams that year. CAD and MEX cannot host that(size) AND they would have bid vs the US

and it is a possibility they may continue with this

I obviously don't sit by the metlife train station tracking the trains all game, but they are always 2 sitting there when I get in the queue. And its usually a 20-30 mins before the first one takes off. Maybe not run them all game, but they could start earlier to alleviate all the congestion

Because the way that the clock runs in football makes complete sense to a neutral observer.

- The clock starts when the play starts, unless it's a kick-off, and then it doesn't start until the other team touches the ball.

- When a player is tackled, the clock continues to run in between plays. But if the pass is incomplete, the clock stops immediately and doesn't start until the ball is snapped on the next play.

- If a player goes out of bounds, the clock stops until the ball is spotted by the ref, and then it starts to run again even though the ball hasn't been snapped to start the play.
Oh wait-- that's not always true. If there are under two minutes left in the half, the clock stops and doesn't start again until the ball is snapped.

Wait-- that's not entirely true either-- in the second half and overtime, that change in how the clock runs applies to when there are under five minutes left.

Oh, and if there are under 2 minutes left and the offense commits a penalty, the refs just remove 10 seconds from the clock.

So the clock runs one way for 53 minutes and a different way for 7 minutes.

But yeah, it makes zero sense how soccer uses their clock.

Here's the solution. Start at 45. End at 0. If you get hurt the clock stops. If the ball goes out of bounds the clock stops. If you fake an injury, it's an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Can you imagine in the NFL "hey what's the holdup...oh yea it's the 13 minute warning"

Artificially building tension is exactly what the NFL does with the 2 minute warning, an unnecessary and tiresome rule which is in place for more ad revenue.

In soccer, there’s always tension. Especially late in games that are tied or a 1 goal difference. No need for random time outs to fake how important the next 2 minutes are.

You don’t like soccer. That’s great, just move on then.

The last thing the game needs is to be Americanized. If that were to happen we'd be changing the rules every year to favor offense and using endless replays because we couldn't properly define something as simple as a "catch".

Soccer's probably as popular as every other sport in the world combined...it'll do just fine without the people too thick to understand how the clock works.

Actually, the 2 minute warning is a historical vestige from when the NFL kept the game time on the field as soccer does. Until the 1960’s, the scoreboard clock was not the official time — the ref kept the official time on the field. The two minute warning alerted both coaches to the actual time left, and allowed the scoreboard clock to be reset to a closer guestimate of the actual time.

Didn’t know that. But in 2018 the time on the clock is plastered everywhere and it’s only value is to artificially create tension and get another couple minutes of ad revenue. I absolutely hate it.

Clock
Kevin999 : 6/13/2018 3:30 pm : link
To me its not an understanding issue, its just not knowing exactly how much time is left. Could you image not knowing the exact time left in an NBA game. There would be no holding for the final shot etc. As someone explained about with the origins of the 2 min warning, the clock is probably due to lack of technology years ago. Since only the ref knows when he stops and start the time the scoreboard would either have to guess or just keep going and then go to "added time" With today's technology, there's no reason why you couldn't have an accurate remaining time. It's just keeping with tradition for the sake of tradition.

Personally< I like the idea of not knowing precisely how much time remains. It helps build some suspense. I was watching China v US women last night and there was a one goal difference with China trying to control the attack. (The game wasn't great soccer but no matter). I feel like the mystery of how many seconds were left added to the drama of CHina potentially scoring.
But you score or have the opportunity
UConn4523 : 6/13/2018 3:53 pm : link
to score every 20 seconds in basketball. You are comparing apples to donuts.

You have what it says is left on the stoppage clock + a bit of overage if you have possession and are attacking. It’s used to also prevent teams from just running down the clock all game after getting a lead. Yes, discretion is used to determine the time but it it’s based on stoppages on play which the referees account for and then announce prior to halftime or the end of the game.

It really isn’t a problem at all unless you are trying to look for one. Anyone that watches the sport knows on average a couple minutes will be added unless there were a ton of injuries or penalties in which case 4 or 5 minutes may be added. It isn’t confusing, the only people who “care” are those that don’t like soccer or want to complain about it.
You basically know..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/13/2018 4:02 pm : link
when the game is going to end. If they say 3 minutes of extra time, shortly after 3 minutes, if there isn't a scoring chance about to happen, the ref will blow the whistle.

I'm sure it is much more exciting to go to replay to determine .1 second remains so a team can have another chance to take a knee.

I get that some people don't like soccer. What amuses me is they think they have valid reasons to not like it when it appears to most other fans to be a crock of shit

as far as the clock goes.

Running time is fine. I just wish you knew how much stoppage time there was before the last 30 seconds.

Also, the stoppage time isn't exact as the ref allows a penalty or a corner if there is an attack going. He may allow a chance to score even if time has expired according to stoppage time.
What’s the problem though as a spectator?
UConn4523 : 6/13/2018 4:42 pm : link
the players play to the final whistle and the spectators watch until the final whistle. What exactly is the problem? Do you miss your flight home if stoppage goes an extra 30 seconds?

The experience is the exact same. What you don’t have is 5 timeouts inside 2 minutes which actually take 20 minutes to finish a game where you are left sitting and waiting for play to start.
Also, the diving complaints with soccer are old and off base

Interesting about the time

A better question would be when and why it was decided to count down the time in Football, Basketball and Hockey, instead of counting up.

Counting up time is actually more natural, since your normal watch/clock does not run backwards, but forwards!
The clock thing used to bother me in the past
ron mexico : 6/13/2018 4:57 pm : link
but I have come to enjoy the "spirit of the game" officiating in soccer as compared to the "letter of the law" approach in football.

No they aren't. Showing a couple dives from other sports won't compare with the several per game in soccer - and I'm a soccer fan. Not all players on the ground are diving, true. But it is a convenient way to attract attention from the ref and far to prevalent in soccer.

I'm pretty sure the clock goes up in international hockey as well
Diving..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/13/2018 6:14 pm : link
is probably the most pressing problem facing soccer and it will be on full display in the next few weeks from the South American countries.

Especially since Netherlands and Robben are at home.

They've never gone far enough in punishing divers. If it happens in the box, it should be a straight red and a suspension.

Make it wholly unworth it to dive and it may stop people from doing it.
Most international..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/13/2018 6:18 pm : link
timing is upward for sports.

Team handball. Hockey. Soccer. Even European basketball leagues have it.
while I 100% agree diving
UESBLUE : 6/13/2018 6:20 pm : link
is a blight on the game and certain countries are far more guilty than others, handing out reds for calls that are sometimes subjecive judgements could be very tricky.
Most penalties that are handed out...
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/13/2018 6:24 pm : link
are subjective. And there have been several high-profile penalties given on dives.

Basically the risk/reward for diving is tilted much more heavily towards the reward side.
again im with you FMiC
UESBLUE : 6/13/2018 6:36 pm : link
I watch EPL every wknd and Ive noticed a lot more yellows handed out for diving which is greatly needed. All Im saying is that a red in say a WC elim match for a subjective dive interp when two players feet are closely tangled could be a real can of worms.
I agree...
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/13/2018 6:40 pm : link
but the situation exists because for all of the talk about cracking down on diving, it still has had a minimal impact.

If they had put drastic measures in place previously instead of basically giving a slap on the wrist it would make some of these guys stay on their feet as long as possible.
The clock thing doesn't bother me at all.

As I get older, I find myself liking soccer more & more. I love the passing. It's truly amazing.

I think there is a certain elitism from some U.S. soccer fans. They like the foreignness of the sport and don't want it too popular with the American public. They want it very European. Unfortunately that is what also keeps the sport from truly being embraced here. MLS seems like it tries to balance being a North American league with playoffs, no pro/rel, salary cap, etc. But also having European team names, clock counting up, did away with the shoot-outs ect.
MLS..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/13/2018 9:36 pm : link
isn't balancing anything with the clock thing.

It isn't just a European thing. As mentioned above - when you have injury time, how the heck are you going to go negative when the clock hits :00 and you still have time left?
Even if it was a “European thing”
UConn4523 : 6/13/2018 9:50 pm : link
you are suggesting to reverse the clock for what, just games on US soil? Is the entire world supposed to change it? Curious what the end game on that is.
Looks like..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/14/2018 8:33 am : link
Atlanta will be the closest match for me in the US. No matches for Charlotte.
I may skip NY
UConn4523 : 6/14/2018 8:40 am : link
and do DC. Sister and brother in law live right in Clarendon, VA and it would be less than an hour ride if I’m already visiting for the weekend than trying to drive to and from MetLife from CT which I can see being 3-4 hours each way for one of these games.
The Metro would be an option too
UConn4523 : 6/14/2018 8:41 am : link
.
I wouldn't change the clock or anything for soccer
pjcas18 : 6/14/2018 8:54 am : link
but just to clarify, in hockey the clock goes down on the broadcast for US and Canada viewers no matter where the game is played in International competition.

and on-ice (on arena scoreboards) it goes down too for US and Canada in the Olympics and other INTL competitions when the game is played in North America.

Whether the clock counts up or down doesn’t matter a whit
Jim in Fairfax : 6/14/2018 10:18 am : link
But I do think that in the 21st century the idea that the ending time of the game should be a secret held by one man on the field is stupid. Stoppage time is perfectly reasonable. But what’s the point of keeping it secret?

Have an official clock operator. And let the ref signal to stop the clock when there are injuries, undue delays, etc. How hard is this?
The way soccer..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/14/2018 10:22 am : link
does it likely avoids clock controversies.

Once the end of stoppage time is hit, there isn't going to be a debate over if the ball was in the goal before the clock hits :00 or not. The progression of an attack is allowed to continue.

The ref doesn't blow the whistle dead mid shot or as a player is driving to the goal.
It isn’t a secret
UConn4523 : 6/14/2018 11:00 am : link
you are allowed to continue play when attacking if you are over the stoppage. If you shoot, it goes wide and then is a goal kick, the game is over.

21st century and tech advances have nothing to do with how Soccer manages time. To FMIC’s point they simply don’t want to stop mid-shot or have to start reviewing goals. All the players know that during stoppage time if the trailing team is attacking, they will be allowed to do so until losing possession after time expires. It really isn’t difficult, and placing a hard stop isn’t necessary. I still don’t even understand the need for it to increasing the viewing experience.
