makes the most sense to hold the event in countries where the infrastructure is already in place. Multiple countries who neighbor each other makes a lot of sense too
They could choose the Rose Bowl again as well. Poor Morocco had to deal with the fact that N. America had the infrastructure to host the Cup tomorrow if need be. The financial benefit was something like double/triple to host here than in N. Africa.
Why doesn't NYC make sense? They've got a new-ish stadium, a set of very densely populated cities within a few hours drive, and international airports that are quickly accessible from Europe.
Would there be something to the West Coast soccer-wise that makes it a more ideal location for the final?
did the US, Mexico, and Canada all go in on a bid together? I see that 60 of the 80 games will be in the US, but how did the plan originate? Other than Japan/South Korea in 2002, has there been a World Cup hosted by multiple countries? The one the US hosted in 1994 is still the most well-attended WC in history.
Other than when corrupt countries like Russia and Qatar bribe corrupt FIFA, is the plan going forward to have multiple countries host each World Cup?
I've given soccer a chance many a time. Will try again this year. But the slow pace, lack of scoring (and scoring chances) the faking injuries every 10 seconds, lack of tackling/hitting. The weird clock that runs up instead of down. And that keeps running when the ball is out of bounds?
I understand it's appeal. But it's just too boring and simple.
hopefully enough time for NJ Transit to figure out that more than 12K people will take the train to the game.
And that some people might want to leave the game early.
Can they please start running the trains earlier? Or just keep them running throughout the game so that there is not a ridiculous build up of people at the end.
I'm sure the conductors are getting paid for the whole time so how expensive can it be to keep them running.

To each their own. Doesn’t sound like you understand the sport, but if you don’t like it you don’t like it. If you like tactics, there’s no better sport to watch, IMO. So many different ways to assemble a team and compete, so many nuances that effect the outcomes of games.
Do you like continuous play? I do. I hate the stops in the NFL, completely boring product.

They don’t just sit in Secaucus for hours waiting for the game to end. The trains operate on other lines.. So, yeah, it would cost a lot. If somebody wants to pony up the money, I’m sure NJ Transit would be happy to run more trains,
Jets fans really do struggle with the simple things.
Sorry it is astonishingly stupid in a sport to have a game clock run up. It makes 0 sense.
Hopefully, I can explain it. Say you have a half that is 45 minutes long. The lower numbers (closer to 0) mean that the half is closer to the beginning, while the higher numbers (closer to 45) meant that the half is closer to the end. When the numbers hit 45, then technically the half is over, except, that in Soccer, unlike other sports, they do not stop the clock when there is a halt in play (injuries mostly, but you can think of it as like a time out in football). The clock keep going, so that in order to get the full amount of time (45 minutes in this example) you need to put that additional time in at the end of the half. Thus, the clock can keep going beyond 45. That's how clocks that count up work. It;s not too dissimilar to a clock in your house which starts at midnight and then goes 1...2...3...etc, rather than the reverse.
As an aside, it would be difficult to have the clock count downward from 45 because then when you to to 0, stoppage time would make you go into negative numbers and think of the math struggles you wold have with that.

this was a concession the US soccer federation made. the CUP is adding 14 teams that year. CAD and MEX cannot host that(size) AND they would have bid vs the US
and it is a possibility they may continue with this

I can take or leave continuous play. To me sports need time to breath. I love hockey though and that has good periods of continuous play with stoppages to let players get a breather and build tension. I like that

I obviously don't sit by the metlife train station tracking the trains all game, but they are always 2 sitting there when I get in the queue. And its usually a 20-30 mins before the first one takes off. Maybe not run them all game, but they could start earlier to alleviate all the congestion
Jets fans really do struggle with the simple things.
Sorry it is astonishingly stupid in a sport to have a game clock run up. It makes 0 sense.
Because the way that the clock runs in football makes complete sense to a neutral observer.
- The clock starts when the play starts, unless it's a kick-off, and then it doesn't start until the other team touches the ball.
- When a player is tackled, the clock continues to run in between plays. But if the pass is incomplete, the clock stops immediately and doesn't start until the ball is snapped on the next play.
- If a player goes out of bounds, the clock stops until the ball is spotted by the ref, and then it starts to run again even though the ball hasn't been snapped to start the play.
Oh wait-- that's not always true. If there are under two minutes left in the half, the clock stops and doesn't start again until the ball is snapped.
Wait-- that's not entirely true either-- in the second half and overtime, that change in how the clock runs applies to when there are under five minutes left.
Oh, and if there are under 2 minutes left and the offense commits a penalty, the refs just remove 10 seconds from the clock.
So the clock runs one way for 53 minutes and a different way for 7 minutes.
But yeah, it makes zero sense how soccer uses their clock.

Here's the solution. Start at 45. End at 0. If you get hurt the clock stops. If the ball goes out of bounds the clock stops. If you fake an injury, it's an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Can you imagine in the NFL "hey what's the holdup...oh yea it's the 13 minute warning"

Artificially building tension is exactly what the NFL does with the 2 minute warning, an unnecessary and tiresome rule which is in place for more ad revenue.
In soccer, there’s always tension. Especially late in games that are tied or a 1 goal difference. No need for random time outs to fake how important the next 2 minutes are.
You don’t like soccer. That’s great, just move on then.
The last thing the game needs is to be Americanized. If that were to happen we'd be changing the rules every year to favor offense and using endless replays because we couldn't properly define something as simple as a "catch".
Soccer's probably as popular as every other sport in the world combined...it'll do just fine without the people too thick to understand how the clock works.

Actually, the 2 minute warning is a historical vestige from when the NFL kept the game time on the field as soccer does. Until the 1960’s, the scoreboard clock was not the official time — the ref kept the official time on the field. The two minute warning alerted both coaches to the actual time left, and allowed the scoreboard clock to be reset to a closer guestimate of the actual time.
I feel like the parents whose kid has no friends, so they throw a Â

Didn’t know that. But in 2018 the time on the clock is plastered everywhere and it’s only value is to artificially create tension and get another couple minutes of ad revenue. I absolutely hate it.

You mean like having playoffs and no relegation? Hiyoooooooooo.
hasn't made the world cup since 1986 so it would be cool to see them in even if they will be huge underdogs. I don't think any decisions have been made yet about whether all 3 host countries will automatically qualify.
+1

Always a question with FIFA.
will the US, Mexico, and Canada automatically qualify?
Where can I buy tix?
I’m sure they will put a temporary grass field in, as has been done in the past.
will the US, Mexico, and Canada automatically qualify?
I think they're expanding to 48 teams in 2026, so my guess is yes, all will automatically qualify.
Yes.

will the US, Mexico, and Canada automatically qualify?
I heard the field was going to be expanded to 48, so that might be the case.
