NFT: Blackstone grills

mitch300 : 6/13/2018 10:21 am
Anyone own one. I seen the commercial the other day and started checking out youtube videos. I already have a Weber and a Traeger. It would be nice to have. Thoughts.
the flat top?
emcca005 : 6/13/2018 10:26 am : link
I had a blackstone with the cast iron flat top... it was great for cooking anything and everything, problem I ran into was storage for it because the cover wouldn't stay elevated, water would pool and create rust. so I had to use it in the garage mostly to avoid moving it inside and out.
If you mean the Blackstone griddle

then one enthusiastic +1 here - my youngest is a very picky eater, and of all things he loves to eat hibachi. That thing has paid itself off 10 times over.

Don't buy one now if you can avoid it, they go on sale frequently, they were just discounted for Memorial Day and I'd expect the same for July 4th.

One note - the top is steel but not stainless, so buy the cover or take the top off and bring it indoors, and treat it the way you would cast iron (no heavy soaps or scraping, season it, etc.).

Whoa! Do not do that again. Running a grill in the garage could kill you and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning.

thanks for the heads up. Where did you purchase yours from. It seems like Home depot has them. Funny, I never noticed them before.
Yeah I'm getting one...
Ryan : 6/13/2018 11:26 am : link
...very shortly. I actually prefer a burger on a flat top or cast iron vs grilling and they're great for big breakfasts, etc.

I honestly didn't have great expectations of it - I found it on clearance at Walmart for $99. At that price, I brought it home and immediately had buyer's remorse (I don't have a big backyard, and I've got a ton of grills/smokers). But my youngest is the hardest one to feed, so I figured what the hell.

The damn thing is very impressive. The surface gets really hot - makes making fried rice or lo mein very easy (used to do it with a wok over a turkey fryer burner). Hibachi comes out great. Even burgers or steaks (sous vide'd steaks seared in garlic parsley butter on this thing are incredible).

I like it so much I'm out for the larger one, which HD had on sale around memorial day in stainless (except for the cooking top).
Yeah
mitch300 : 6/13/2018 12:25 pm : link
I would use it for big breakfast and fried rice and such. Also want to take a stab on cooking Hibachi/Teppanyaki style.
I have the 36in blackstone flat top w 4 burners

Use it for camp-outs. We regularly go with a big group. We have been beating the shit out of it for at least 4 years (prob 30 campouts) and it still works great.

Its really fantastic whether you're cooking for large or small groups. Besides breakfast, its really good for tacos/fajitas.

It's portable? Or do you just throw it in the back of a pick up and make it portable?
One of the other dads from my daughter's Y-Princesses tribe has one
Greg from LI : 6/13/2018 12:48 pm : link
Brings it to all the campouts. It's great. If I could justify the expense, I'd buy one.
Yes, even the 36 inch is portable.

The bottom shelf lifts out and the legs fold under the manifolds. The steel griddle lifts off as well and has its own storage bag. The griddle just sits on top of the unit, its not attached. Its still pretty bulky even when broken down, but we have a trailer to keep it in.

Portable is a difference maker even bulky.

My coleman camping grill isn't exactly small, and I like the convenience of the coleman, but not the cooking quality. The coleman has a griddle which I use to make breakfast, but if this was able to cook burgers and dogs, etc. seems better suited than the coleman for camping. depending on the size difference.
I have the pizza oven and love it

haha should clarify I always had the garage door wide open when doing so. I'm an idiot about a lot of things but this is definitely not one of them.

I think a flat top is the best tool to have for glamping with a group. That and a simple charcoal grill and you are good to go. Its just so much easier than working with the clutter of burners and fry pans.

I think the OP was asking more in the context of home use. For that I can't really say. Depends on how big a family and how many parties/picnics you do.
I had the Coleman Road Trip as well - doesn't get anywhere
jcn56 : 6/13/2018 3:02 pm : link
near as hot as the Blackstone. When it let it run at full blast for about 10 minutes, that surface gets hot enough to put a good sear on both sides of a burger just like you would over a charcoal fire. Can't say the same for the Road Trip (which I really liked otherwise, FWIW).
Just

wanted opinions on how they like them. It would be for home use. I just seen the commercial. I didn't know they anything about them. I started googling and youtubeing.
BJ’S
Bleedin Blue : 6/13/2018 3:23 pm : link
Has the 36” for $229.00 with a clipless coupon until July 11th. I don’t have one, but my friend does and swears by it!
One thing to note - the BJ's unit is the older model
jcn56 : 6/13/2018 4:35 pm : link
The newer one has some improvements - a greatly improved grease management system (the prior unit's grease can sucked) and an integrated cutting board on the side.

Great price from BJ's if you don't mind the older unit and were going to buy the utensils and cover anyway (IMO, the cover is a must unless you plan to bring the unit indoors or under cover).

That’s still extremely dangerous. Even with the door open, CO can get trapped and seep into the house. Plus, there’s the potential of the igniting gas fumes from your car or stored gasoline and exploding.

point taken... but if I must paint a picture for you, our garage stored no cars, the door was wide open while the grill was right on the edge of the concrete pad.I had a shop fan always blowing in the garage for airflow because it's South Carolina and it gets ridiculously hot, oh wait you're from Fairfax so you're an expert on heat too. The garage was separate from the house so there was no danger to anyone else, regardless of how minimal it may be because any possible precaution I could take was taken.
Worst part about this board is when you chime in with a personal experience or opinion based on experience you've got some expert waiting to scold you. My apologies for not explaining the entire situation thoroughly enough to pass your safety check, get off your high horse, nobody got hurt, and I sold the grill and now grill of my deck...or should I not do that because you know the flame and wood combo could be dangerous?
