Betts is great and as great as he is, but they don't need OF. Pitching yes. Altuve, love him, I just see him going down like Pedroia. He's balls to the wall all the time.

Not comparing ability but playing style. I just see him burning out or racking up injuries as hard as he plays like Pedroia did.

BTW didn't Pedroia have an MVP?

Yes, 2008. Not undeserved, either. Really incredible season, but to me still not the general caliber of player as Altuve.

Pedroia's MVP wasn't really that great a season. It just happened to come in a year where no one had a particularly huge year. Jeter had at least half a dozen seasons as good or better than Pedroia's 2008. Hell, Cano has a bunch too, but neither won an MVP.

Well he did foul off two 102 mph pitches. Glad they didn't speed up his bat with a slider.

He's getting better though. Last game he gave up two 1st inning homers and only one tonight.

You're right though, if he fixes that he's gonna be really good with his stuff. Uses all three pitches and his fastball is sneaky fast, kind of like Green's. It just explodes into the zone.

Amazing. Teams like '98 are maybe once in a generation IF you're lucky. This team is good but has a ways to go to be like that.
Andujar's pick and throw in the 7th was pretty big I thought -
Del Shofner : 6/14/2018 10:17 pm : link
that could have been a hit easy and maybe even a double. He looks more and more comfortable at 3rd. He's obviously a good athlete.

German looks like a very legit 5 starter to me for now with upside to be a #3 or better.

Very impressive young man. Good fastball, slider and change. gotta love it. Another great find by Cashman , forget how we got him... Eovaldi trade?? Either way he was def just a throw in.. but cash prob picked him out of a list of names so kudos ..

He came with Eovaldi in 2014 for Martin Prado and David Phelps.

That stat just goes to show how truly great that 98 team was.

I've been watching the Yanks since the Jake Gibbs/Horace Clarke days of the early 70's and the 98 team was the best Yankee team I've ever seen. They finished 125-50 when it was all said and done.

Torre had a great quote about that team when asked if it was the best team ever, he replied he didn't know about that but knows they're in the conversation and that's good enough for him. I always think about that when the 98 team is talked about and yeah Joe, it's good enough for me too.

That 98 team was so ridiculous. They basically had one long winning streak all season long once they got past the first 2-3 games. Wells, Cone, Andy El Duque and irabu for comic relief as the 5th starter. Lineup stacked 1-9. Insane BP. Insane team.

Vs Price tonight in Seattle.

The game is on MLB Network using the NESN feed if anyone is interested.
They were easily the best team I've ever seen
Greg from LI : 6/14/2018 10:34 pm : link
There have been teams with more individual talent (not many, but there were some) but I've never seen a great team like that that also were a bunch of grinders like that. Every game, every at-bat.....they just never gave in, never coasted, never accepted a loss until they relaxed a bit late in the year when they were about 25 games up on Boston and had a stretch where they went 12-13 or something. They were strong in every facet - solid defensive team, everyone could hit, most had at least decent power even if they didn't have any one big slugger, excellent rotation and pen, pretty good speed on the bases. No real weaknesses, and they were mostly a bunch of hardasses who hated losing with a burning passion.
Anyway...Drury went 2-5 with a double and a homer for Scranton
Greg from LI : 6/14/2018 10:38 pm : link
He needs to be up in Austin's spot like yesterday. I get that they didn't want to tinker with the roster too much because things have been going so well, but Austin hasn't hit at all in about 6 weeks and Drury gives them much more flexibility.

Agree with that. I don't know what's taking so long.
There were so many games in ‘98
bceagle05 : 6/14/2018 10:42 pm : link
where the Yanks were down four or five runs in the sixth or seventh inning and ya just figured, “Can’t win’em all - we’ll get’em tomorrow.” Then they’d get a run or two and you just knew late-inning magic was coming. Truly incredible ride.
They were way too slow to move Drury around
bceagle05 : 6/14/2018 10:44 pm : link
unless they were just waiting for him to be 100 percent symptom-free before putting more on his plate.

In fairness, I think they were waiting for that, and also to give Drury a couple of games at 1B. Although with Walker backing up Bird, not sure how much we need that. Thinking about it, they probably just want Drury to play every day, which he won't with Andujar-Didi-Gleyber-Bird in there. That's our infield, they're not going to platoon just for Drury.

To this point - the game I most remember like that was in Oakland where they were down 5-1 going into the ninth. Kenny fucking Rogers of all people shut them down for 8 innings. Yanks loaded the bases with no one out and Strawberry pinch hit and knocked a grand slam to the it. They ended up winning 10-5 after a 9 run 9th inning.

It's possible that they think this builds his trade value more

Starting every day in Scranton and posting big numbers rather than playing part time in the Bronx and maybe scuffing a bit. Who knows.
Yep, I remember the Straw grand slam in Oakland.
bceagle05 : 6/14/2018 11:03 pm : link
I think it was the second game of a doubleheader, but I may be wrong. That would make the comeback even more impressive. I remember one against the lowly Phillies where Tino hit a three-run HR late to tie it after the team had been dead all night.
It was indeed the second game of a doubleheader
Greg from LI : 6/14/2018 11:09 pm : link
That part I didn't remember, found it out when I looked the game up.

That was actually Strawberry's second pinch hit grand slam that year.

It builds Drury's trade value and/or also makes Walker very tradeable.
That 98 team
Bill2 : 6/14/2018 11:17 pm : link
was a meat grinder for opposing pitching staffs in a season. They required so so many pitches and had worked over bullpens before the last game of a series. They had the only great bullpen in MLB that year. They knew that even up against a great team they just had to get to the 6th or 7th.

btw, look up the career stretch Bernie had 1995 to 2002. Averaged 317. Over 400obp during that stretch and drove in an average of 100 per year, stole about 12 bases a year but was not a great baserunner, fielded beautifully ( hid a weak arm). He had years with BA of 328, 339, 342 and 333 in that stretch. He was every bit a very core player. Just did not fit the core four narrative.
Bill
Greg from LI : 6/14/2018 11:20 pm : link
I've long maintained that Bernie was their best player in the dynasty years. He put up monster seasons in that time period you noted. Both his propensity to get dinged up and miss games as well as his sudden, steep decline after 2002 kept him out of HoF consideration, but for about 8 years he played at a HoF level.
One thing to note about the Core Four...
bceagle05 : 6/14/2018 11:22 pm : link
That term wasn’t used until 2009 (to my knowledge) because Jeter, Andy, Mo and Jorge were the homegrown guys remaining from the dynasty years. I never took it as a slight at Bernie - if he were still patrolling CF for the 2009 team, it would’ve been Core Five.

I had forgotten that Knoblauch was the 2B pretty much all that year. It was before he got the yips throwing to 1B.

Interesting thing is Po didn't really start playing full time till '98. He wasn't even on the '96 team. So him and Bernie have the same amount of rings.
Also Bernie really pre-dated those guys
