Here's a difference from last year. Is it significant?

Marty in Albany : 6/15/2018 11:02 am
Weights of RBs:
Last year I noticed that all our RBs weighed about 210 lbs.
Perkins 208
Gallman 210
Darkwa 215
Vereen 205
I thought we needed more variety in weight to accomplish different situations.

This season we have RBs who are 210, 220, 230, and 240. In and of itself, is this better, or just different?
Big thing that jumped

out at me was Darkwa only 5-7 pounds more than Perkins/Gasllman
I believe

It will go with the mentality of the new line.

Bruising. Punch the guy in front of you in the face. No, not literally Hernandez !!!

I like bigger backs and will be interesting to see how much of a bruiser Barkley will be on those 2 and 1's and 3 and 2's.
I don't think it's particularly significant
Ten Ton Hammer : 6/15/2018 11:26 am : link
The old roles of "scatback, goal line back" are kind of outdated. It's just whoever makes plays. You don't have to be 230+ to win in short yardage. In fact I'd probably be more concerned with height and explosiveness. A big guy that needs 5 yards to get moving is less valuable to me than a smaller back that can disappear behind his blockers and doesn't need big holes to run through.
The only meaningful difference is that Barkley is much more talented
UberAlias : 6/15/2018 11:29 am : link
and versatile than anyone we had previously. I keep seeing talk about the RB unit but you really have Barkley and a bunch of guys. To be honest I would have preferred Darkwa over Stewart. But in the end the only thing that matters is that we have Barkley now and didn't before. You can say Stewart was brought in for locker room presence but the reality is, the environment currently feels 100x better than it did at the end of last season all around and I highly doubt Stewart had much of an impact in that. It's the byproduct of people being given a fresh start and more positive energy coming from above.
I think Gettleman prefers size.
Brown Recluse : 6/15/2018 11:37 am : link
He made plenty of comments on Saquon's size before and after the draft.

I would say its significant.
Probably 'talking out my yingus'

But it seems like power (pulling guards and or two OL vs one defender?) you might use big bruiser RBs whereas with zone (everyone shift left or shift right one spot, hit at an angle?, outside blocker moves in space?) You might use initially quicker low center of gravity type RBs?

Sounds like a bit of both, though, this year?
Barkley is a difference maker
Alwaysblue22 : 6/15/2018 1:56 pm : link
Barkley changes the game....and the Giants have not had a back like him for as long as I can remember. That is the difference between last years group and the present one....BARKLEY....period.
If Barkley and OBJ stay healthy we are going to
gtt350 : 6/15/2018 5:30 pm : link
be really entertained by this offense
I was always a fan of big back/ball control
chilly460 : 6/15/2018 6:04 pm : link
I think now is a good time to go back to basics with a power run game and defense. I know rules benefit the passing game more, but with defenses shifting to lighter cover LBs and pass rushing DL, it would seem that a power run game that negates that speed and attacks their vulnerability would be wise. Plays into Eli and the play action game too.
I think it is just different -

Weight and size will not mean much with out talent (speed, vision, football smarts, etc ...)

I am glad Barkley is as big as he is (235?) - it may extend his career (may not).

I don't think the size difference is significant (I could be wrong) ... If Barkley comes as advertise, I think his size will be an after thought.
Is Gallman only 210?
short lease : 6/15/2018 9:17 pm : link
Dam, i thought he was way bigger than that.
210 isn't tiny. Tiki did a lot of damage at that weight class
Ten Ton Hammer : 6/16/2018 12:06 am : link
Ahmad Bradshaw as well.

TT - I agree. But, I just kept reading about his aggressive "down hill" power running style and I assumed he was about 225 - 230. I don't know why ...?

My bad for assuming.
Ground and pound with this group is stupid
Bob in Newburgh : 6/16/2018 6:55 am : link
Barkley, and Stewart for that matter, should be using their size to run through arm tackles of a spread out defense.

You do not assemble the fastest group of skill position players in the NFL to routinely pack the defense and try to run through them.
I like the backs weight to vary.
Giant John : 6/16/2018 7:55 am : link
Soften them up with the big guys. The throw faster guys at them when legs get tired.

Sounds like Jacobs/Bradshaw

Neither Tiki nor Bradshaw played at 210 pounds.
DG does prefer size
JonC : 6/18/2018 10:12 am : link
that said, size alone doesn't indicate a RB who actually can move piles, excel in short yardage, break tackles consistently, etc.
Barkley should be the starter, assuming
Beezer : 6/18/2018 10:18 am : link
he masters the playbook. And everything he says, even this early, leads me to believe he will.

I can then see a follow-up with Gallman slashing, if Barkley needs a quick break.

Then hit Stewart for a couple.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
