PFT: Kickoffs gone if concussions aren't reduced by new rule

Sonic Youth : 6/15/2018 2:15 pm
Hate this idea. Apparently the replacement, according to Pereira's beliefs, would be a 4th and 15 from the 35 yard line (?).

I should add

That this is speculation, not a foregone conclusion.
The league wants it both ways

How about slowing down and balancing the game a bit. You have wide receivers basically like the roadrunner wearing microscopic hutch pads running full speed down the field because nobody is allowed to bump or hold them up a bit. This results in extremely violent collisions where the head is the primary point of impact. What other surface area do they have to use at this point? Look at those flimsy shoulder pads and look at the shoulder pads Bo Jackson wore. Let the defense actually be allowed to play defense and let them get away with more holding. You'll have less catastrophic hits.

Not a fan of allowing holding. However, I'd be OK with route re-routing and de-cleating within 10 yards.
They need to outlaw the three (and four) point stance

I don't understand why they haven't made this simplest of changes already.

while the o-line can play in a two point stance, it's going to be impossible for the d-line. Plus you don't get as many injuries in the trenches because the contact happens so quickly neither lineman has built up enough momentum.

Because instead of affecting 8-12 plays a game you're changing the entire nature of the game.
I think the changes they've made will have a pretty meaningful

impact. At least I hope so - taking kickoffs out of the game completely would be unfortunate.
It would be interesting to see if they follow up with this

Kickoffs don't matter to me, but in terms of a product, kickoffs are just an opportunity for more commercial breaks.

Because it's not just 8-12 plays a game in which players get concussions. And it's the collisions at the line of scrimmage on every play that do the greatest damage over the long haul. Linemen can be experiencing dozens of "mild concussions" per game and it adds up! The game can survive the loss of the three-point stance.
I still like my idea best. But apparently no one esle likes it.

I'll repeat it again.

Allow the kick to go out of bounds just like a punt.

The strategy is increased, the importance of the kicker is increase, it’s still an exciting part of the game, but returnable kicks are greatly reduced.

Imagine the end of the end when a time scores with basically no time left, the kicker trying to pin the down and not allow a kick return shanks it out at the 50, the other team comes on and throws a hail mary to win the game. Or he pins them down to the 1 and the other team march 99 yards to win the game (obviously more time on the clock in this scenario).

i think converting a 4th and 15
Dankbeerman : 6/15/2018 6:57 pm : link
is astronomically eaiser then an onside kick.

Agreed, I'd like to see the success percentages on 4th and 15 versus onside kick. Maybe 4th and 20 or move it back to the 30 to put the other team in FG range if it fails

I like this scenario even better...Your team is down all game, 4th quarter comes, you score two unanswered TD's, but time is running out. You kicker makes an incredible kick and it goes out at the 1 yard line. The other team now has to run the ball out of the endzone. (with current rules they would just kneel three times and game over). Running back is tackled in the endzone for a safety. Now they free kick the ball back to your team. Your team marches down and scores the game winning TD.
