NFT: Any Ford Truck owners? First time buying used, any advice?

LawrenceTaylor56 : 6/15/2018 2:45 pm
Getting into kayaking this summer, I need a truck. I've been looking for a truck for about 2 months now. Finally saw one online that seems to check all the boxes. Ran a Carfax, nothing negative on it.

2006 Ford F150 XL
121,xxx miles on it

Asking $3800

I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link, if allowed I will. I'm wondering if those who have an F150 think this is a good buy. Or buyer beware type deal.

Any advice on buying used? I've only bought new cars before and swore to myself I'll never do that again. Thanks in advance.

engine?

there were some problems with the 5.4 V8 for a few years. I know it was an issue in 2004 and 05 but I think it was taken care of by 06.

and have an older F250

YOU really want the 5.4L Triton not the 4.6L V8. Get underneath it and look for rust. Pat close attention to Fuel lines. That sounds like a great deal especially if it is a 4x4... maybe too good if you know what I mean.
Here's the link to the truck

If this isn't allowed. Mods please delete. I'm thinking about buying this. Not peddling it.

Engine is 4.2L V6

Just need this to be my beater truck to get me and the kayak to the water.

Yeah, it's not a 4x4. I probably should hold out for one since I live in the North East.
It's priced on the low side
Greg from LI : 6/15/2018 3:04 pm : link
Likely because it's a standard cab, only has the 6, and 2X4. If all you're wanting to do with it is haul a kayak around, it's probably fine.
4 X 4 is overated in my opinion
oghwga : 6/15/2018 3:20 pm : link
you're not buying it to drive in the snow, why spend the money/give up the fuel economy?

Looks like it was a township truck and if it was 4 wheel drive it would have had a plow on it so it would have been dead.

Looks to me like this was a truck that guys sat in and drank coffee while work was being done. 10K miles a year and probably well maintained.

Front brakes are the only bugaboo I had with my Ford. Pricey and they wear out often.

Yeah, it was a landscaping company that owned it previously. They upgraded all their vehicles and this company bought all 5 or 6 vehicles.

Greg, yeah that's my thought process. Won't need it for much else.

Just wanted to run it by here to see if there are any Ford experts who can give some advice.

But my god that was a long time ago.

here's my advice
GeneInCal : 6/15/2018 6:53 pm : link
buy a Ram instead.
I’m a Chevy guy so not any help.

Do love my pickups though.
Ford is fine.

I've owned both Ford and Dodge truck-based SUVs. Stick with Ford. You'll have a lot fewer and less expensive repairs.
Sort of off topic ....

I have a Ford Fusion (2011) with the bigger engine. I love that car. So much "get up and go". I will keep it as long as possible.

Isn't the price of gas going up? .... you maybe able to use that to your advantage? ... if negotiating the price.
That thing looks brand new ...

Good luck LT ... with whatever you choose.

Looks like a nice truck, and $3,800 for a 2006 F150 is a great price, imho. As long as you know how to drive a stick shift i'd go for it.
I have a
kes722 : 6/16/2018 9:19 am : link
2015 transit conversion van with the eco boost engine

And

2014 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi

Both have similar stat engines but the boost has a twin turbo engine.

The turbo lag is awful and if given a choice.. 5.7 all the way

Don't recall the years involved
cjd2404 : 6/16/2018 6:26 pm : link
but didn't Ford recall a ton of cars/trucks for frame rot? Might want to check that out. My buddy has one that was affected, and they did just replace the frame on it, but I don't know the make, model or year of that one.

Ah. Did a quick google search to make sure this truck wasn't effected. 1997-2004 Ford F150 were recalled to have the straps holding the fuel tank replaced.
You don't need 4x4
EricJ : 6/17/2018 10:36 am : link
How many days per year do you drive in deep snow? It's ridiculous. Now, if you plan to drive on the beach A LOT with it then fine.

I have had quite a few trucks. My first one was not a 4WD and I lived in snow country. I would just shovel snow into the pickup bed. With that added weight, the truck handled great.
Regarding your kayaking...

are you kayak fishing or just kayaking?

What kayak are you fishing from?

Sorry for the late reply. I picked up an Ascend 10 foot fishing kayak from Bass Pro Shops. Couple rod holders and plenty of space for my cooler and gear.
MY ADVICE. Buy Jap.

Did just about exactly what you are doing last year, for me, pulling a small camper and kayaks and bikes - needed a used rig. My price point was $9-11,000 - after quite a bit of research and shopping, went with a used 05', hi-miles Tundra Limited Double Cab that was absolutely cherry. Not a spot of rust on it, smallish DOHC V8 has plenty of power, gets the job done in spades. Love the truck.

After a while, I realized that while it was possible to find used American Pickups with no rust and in very good condition, the ones in my range all seemed to have more age-related issues than the Japanese ones I looked at - doors rattled, busted handles, knobs, accessories.

All major manufacturer full size pickups are built to last clear of 200,000 miles easily - if buying new then I'd buy whatever suited me best - but used is a different market. The older Fords and GM's had issues with certain V8 packages - do your homework - it's worth it.
