What are folks expectations for Cody Latimer?

CMicks3110 : 6/16/2018 7:28 pm
He seems to have all the physical tools in the world. Should have single coverage virtually all the time given the other talent at the skill positions. And has seemingly performed well in Training camp? I am hoping that he could have Martavis Bryant type production (obviously minus the off-the-field stuff)
he should catch what's thrown his way
Giantsfan79 : 6/16/2018 7:30 pm : link
without dropping the ball. strong play on special teams would also be ideal.
Dwayne Harris numbers
giantsFC : 6/16/2018 7:35 pm : link
but minus the injuries.

So 20 catches, a few returns and decent special teams.

I don't expect him to be the teams number "2" WR.
Best case

5-6 red zone TDS. He should see a ton of 1 on 1s inside the 20. Hopefully he can use his size to contribute some points.
He seems to be getting in sync with Eli

Maybe the lights turn on for him in this offense plus it’s not like he’s had the greatest qb’s throwing to him in Denver
not much

my GUESS is that Cody will be the best choice at the start of the 2018 season and will do a more than adequate job.

I am hoping that a real high performer will emerge from the group behind him, either later in the year or in 2019.
If I had to place a bet, my money would be on Etta Amba-Towa to develop as Cody's replacement at #3.

Cody will still be valuable in the WR core and on ST.

team.
I expect him to excel on the punt coverage team
Milton : 6/16/2018 8:44 pm : link
And if he can win the job as the outside WR in three-receiver sets, that will help offset the fact that he is likely going to cost the team a compensation pick in next year's draft.
Love for him to be

better than Reuben Randall, if not as good as Mario Manningham.
Hope he has a breakout year.

Latimer finished his fourth season in 2017 with a career-high 19 receptions for 287 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 11 games. He also had eight kick returns for 190-yards.
Reuben Randle in 4 years

188 catches 2644 Yards 20 TD's

Cody Latimer in 4 years

35 catches 445 yards 3 TD's

Yeah

But Randall was played a LOT more. And was a coach killer.
Randall has done shit since

If we had a relatively good 2nd WR those years it would have helped. Needless to say a decent blocking line

He's played double digits games 3 straight years and couldn't get targets.

If he scores 5 times that will be more shocking than him not making the roster.

I expect vert little and think the WR depth is alarming.

This.

We should be expecting more from Roger Lewis who has more production in 2 years than CL's 4.

He is getting $2.5M guaranteed, so I think we can expect him to last past the first quarter of the season.
Interesting opportunity for Latimer
Guyton/Jackson : 6/17/2018 12:06 am : link
He kind of got shafted a little (aside from the whole Super Bowl 50 ring thing) when you think about it. Drafted in the second round by a John Fox coached team with Peyton Manning as your QB. He had tremendous veterans ahead of him in Demarion’s Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Almost a perfect landing point as a rookie but John Fox and the Broncos “mutually agree” to part ways and Kubiak steps in. New coaches who didn’t draft you don’t always look at you the same as the previous regime typically.

Still, his Second season and he continues to be behind tremendous vets and gets experience in the playoff but can’t breakout. Next season Peyton retires and he has less talent around him.

Bottom line, he’s a former highly touted prospect who has played with the best and seen The Promised Land. Seems like a good guy to have on your team.

Oh, and there’s no way Peyton hasn’t coached Eli in how to best use his skills.

I’ll say 50 catches for 650 yards, 4 TD’s, and a few clutch 3rd and long conversions in cold weather.
I seem to recall reading that...
Milton : 6/17/2018 12:11 am : link
Latimer had begun to show some real promise as a WR last year, but there was such a mess at the QB position, it was limited to flashes. And Denver fans were disappointed to see him sign elsewhere. So maybe the Giants are in the right place at the right time for this former 2nd round pick.
Much better player than given credit for

With SB, OBJ, EE, SS, I do not see how he can have a great # of catches unless we have injuries.

I expect SB, OBJ and EE to be on the field most of the time. Keeping them somewhat fresh will be the only reason for them not to be on the field. RE, CL, and SS will share 2 slots. What the playing time allocation will be is unknown at this time, but should be custom allocated based on opponent.

RE and CL are good to great blockers. SS is on brink of becoming a great receiver and is already very good. RE and CL have the post up and/or vertical skills that you want in the red zone.
To some extent, there should be times when nobody
Jimmy Googs : 6/17/2018 11:41 am : link
on the Defense should be covering Latimer with OBJ, Engram and Barkley to worry about. If Eli has time, he absolutely needs to find Latimer and make some big plays...
It's very difficult to be a punt gunner
shyster : 6/17/2018 12:01 pm : link
along with playing a starting WR spot. The gunning responsibility requires an all-out burst that can't be as sharp if you've just been giving a burst off the line every play while the offense had the ball.

Roger Lewis stopped being a gunner last year after OBJ got hurt and Lewis started getting regular WR snaps.

Dwayne Harris never really successfully did both at the same time. Whenever he was relied on heavily as a WR, he would have to beg off coverage, often with one ding or another. And the Giants made a decision before the 2017 season that they wouldn't even try making Harris do both.

It will be one or the other for Latimer. The original plan might have been for him to play special teams and for Marshall to be the WR. With Marshall failing the physical and exiting the picture, it may be Latimer at WR and Russell Shepard gunning.

Make that before the 2016 season. It was only 2015 that Harris attempted both duties, in some fashion.

How many times a game do think the gunner is going "full burst" down the field?
I just don't see Latimer
mrvax : 6/17/2018 12:26 pm : link
becoming a 3rd WR. He's had 4 NFL years to become a starter and has never made it. No harm in letting him try in camp though.
He could surprise. He played behind two very good receivers
Ira : 6/17/2018 12:33 pm : link
and with not so good quarterbacks in Denver. He won't be a star or even close to that, but he may be better than expected.

Giants punted six times a game in 2017. Almost every punt requires an all out effort because even when it winds up a touchback, the gunner doesn't know that when he takes off.

A very small margin can be the difference in a game. Lewis whiffed a tackle against the Lions Week 2 last year that wound up a return TD and it very likely was the difference between a W and and L.

The margin between a punt downed at the one or going into the end zone can also be a difference maker.

It's not just the number of all-out efforts. It's the fact that a punt will immediately follow an offensive series, where the WR will have been giving his all.

Fatigued muscles are a recipe for injury. Harris could not stay healthy on a game-to-game basis carrying both responsibilities.

In ‘16 Harris made the Pro Bowl for his work as a gunner . He also had over 1200 yards in return yardage , including averaging a very respectable 24 yards per KOR. He was a solid player . Latimer , by comparison , is nothing . He’s a perennial tease, who is on the team based on his relationship to the new WR coach . I hope he covers kicks well .

Alwaysblue22 : 6/17/2018 9:39 pm : link
He makes the team because he is a special teams gunner. Field position is VITAL in pro - football. Latimer will scare no one as a receiver. But do not overlook the contributions that a player provides on Special teams.

agreed. I suspect he will win the #2 job.
I actually think
Joey in VA : 6/17/2018 10:37 pm : link
He busts out with a smart QB who likes big targets and an offensive coach who likes to spread it around. You throw in Odell and Engram getting a lot of attention and Lattimer can be a 35-40 catch guy. It's not great but 3-4 a game and a possible red zone and 3rd down target.

Joey, only 35 - 40 for the 2nd/3rd receiver role? If in fact Shepard lines up on the outside more this year and we use more 2 TE sets to run and even pass, well, I'd think Latimer could be a 60-700-5 type guy.
Many will argue he won't get enough throws his way to garner those types of stats but I disagree because I believe Shurmur's offense will be about creating mis-matches and Latimer will often draw the 3rd corner.
I can see Latimer being a steady, reliable presence for Eli.
I believe the next great Giant QB isn't on the roster...

Special Teamer
BlackburnBalledOut : 6/18/2018 11:05 am : link
He'll make his mark on specials.

I dont forsee him being a viable contributor on offense based on his track record and more importantly the talent surrounding him.

He could become more valuable if someone misses time.

Theres a possibility he gets more opportunites as defenses will be pre-occupied with beckham barkley engram and shepard. I just dont see that happening as i think Rudolph and Lewis (i cant stand lewis) will get the back end WR snaps.

I expect a good special teamer
