Morning all. Crazy golf yesterday when the USGA and NWS kind of blew the weather report and the course dried out too quickly after 2PM.
I am not a fan of the US Open and USGA for precisely that reason. They live on the edge too often. I'm all for a tough course. No problem with tight fairways, high rough and fast greens. I do dislike good shots rolling off the green. I know crispino said the best should make the best shots and he is right. But when you make the greens too fast and place the pins in positions where even marginally missed putts roll off into oblivion, it makes a sham of it. When balls make the greens(well on), they should stay on and not be pushed off by wind.
I think DJ was so worried about putts rolling off he kept leaving his short. Conversely, Justin Rose only hit 3 or 4 fairways and was able to stay at the top. He is a very good short game player, but his putter can fail him.
Some very good players got destroyed yesterday. Players with great iron shots and good putting skills.
If you hit a green it should stay on most of the time. I'm not talking about balls barely on or balls hit too far that bounce through like long irons that hit down slopes.
Anyway, enough soapbox. THe CEO said they would water overnight. I think they are very worried and may err on the side of caution. I'd bet that they move a few of the hardest pin positions to a less vulnerable locations (3 feet can make a world of difference).
There are some very good players near the top. DJ, Rose, Finau, Koepka. Not sure about Berger.
Still think DJ will win and that Rose will push him hard. Stenson is close as is Reed and one of those two could get it together.
Happy Father's Day.
I'm a Phil fan and he should be DQ'd - hoping he sleeps on it and withdraws this morning. I think it was a reaction to 2004 when he led and had a similar thing happen, although yesterday's putt was worse than the one in question he made in 2004 and believe it or not, the course was worse in 2004.
Agreed. He needs to withdraw. I’m sure he won’t though.
I still like a difficult set up for the Open, but yesterday went beyond difficult.
When a rule that imposes a *penalty* can be cravenly abused to save strokes, it is a poorly conceived rule. Imagine the uproar if Phil had holed out the putt on the moving ball, which he very nearly did. Certainly not a good look for him.

Yep. They could have made the pins more accessible or watered and not cut. Either would have been fine. I think the missed weather report caused the problem. But they always err on the wrong side. These guys can putt on 13 or 14s, but you cannot have them do that when 3 feet past runs it off the green. Despite the drunken outbursts yesterday by a few, fans want to see good shots rewarded.
A bunch of Opens have finished with winners above par. Looks like this one will as well depending how much the wind blows today. Remember, on Friday afternoon the wind died down and the players were putting for birdies on every hole.
Me, I am enjoying it immensely.
For you faint of heart types, the John Deere Classic will be played in Illinois in a few weeks where Bryson DeChambeau won last year going 18 under par. Maybe you should just watch those kind of tournaments...
Should one of the early birds get hot and put up a red number it could get real interesting

I think most people want to see he winner -4 to +2 in that area. And this should be the hardest tournament of the year.
but this unattractive golf. not easy to watch, guys yesterday were just surviving instead of really showing their talents.
yes last year was a joke -16 but say the 2008 torrey pines us open where woods won -1 was super exciting and was extremely challenging.
The USGA is trying to fix what they screwed up yesterday. And screw up they did.

Nobody is looking for -18. And most of us well know the history of US Open scores, where par is a very good/excellent round(or even final score). Anywhere between +2 and -2 is perfect (+/-) final score, IMV.
However, I certainly respect your opinion as it is a valid one. I just prefer to not see the championship lost because the wind blows a ball off from the inner 50% of a green.
Tee to green the course is perfect, IMHO.
Disagree. Poor shots are punished, and if you want to be a hero and try and make up for it...be wary. Good shots are rewarded, they just are rewarded with pars. Several consecutive good shots are rewarded with birdies.
Play really well and really smart...and you win.

My guess is they set the range to be just what you said...except the wind has blown more than what they thought and it negatively affects scores. Wind is what it is. Otherwise, the range you said is spot on.
So what is the problem?

Respect yours as well man. Wind is a natural hazard and can't control it.
Either way, I am looking forward to it and will undoubtedly have a well-deserved champion around 6pm tonight...

But on this course, it's virtually random.

I saw plenty of wonderful shots yesterday that went unrewarded. Not hero shots. Look at DJs round. Lots of middle of green. And how many balls did you see all but stopped, if not stopped, that proceeded to roll off.
As for the time of the day being a difference - it always is. Generally morning tee times have better conditions, and that is just the way it is.
But again, just perception. I don't mind tough at all. I just don't like good balls landing well onto the green rolling off. And then pin placements that bring 3 putts into play from inside 12 feet.
But when you come to a championship track like Shinnecock it should be a tough test of golf, and the wind conditions are up, it becomes a brutal test golf. But that is what a major should be.
my take...

you are not wrong - especially the -15 winning scores.
Enjoy the round.
But he is on the wrong side of the fairway to attack the tough pin there. So a hero like Mickelson would try the low percentage lob and probably pull it off 1 in 5 times. Koepka smartly plays out to the left side of the green and says...i will try and make my par from there and at worst a bogey since I screwed up my drive on a very demanding hole.
Koepka is rewarded with a great par because he makes a fabulous 40+ foot putt.
How to win the US Open...

excellent play there. and also why Phil will never win a US Open.
Guys were shooting 66 yesterday when they went out with no wind. The range you mentioned would be the winning score if the wind wasn't up so much this week.
probably lower...

at an Open, give or take a couple depending on the course. Even par should probably be the highest winning score; so a tournament where the winning score is over par is probably a little unfair

They could have added a little extra water to the greens over the course of the tournament to reward the good shots by allowing them to stay on the green

Except Phil's bullshit excuse of using the rule to save strokes doesn't hold water since he didn't even know how many strokes it would cost him and what the actually penalty was.
Clown shoes move by Phil made worse by his explanation and then saying get over it for people having a problem with what he did.
Lost all respect for him,and he should've been DQ'd.
I love a tough golf course. I hate when a good shot instead of being rewarded, goes rolling off the green into sand or high grass. Terrible. Glad to see they did some work last night.
Tour players are so good. Don't ever worry about tricking up a golf course for these guys because they are insanely talented.
Great Open...
Using “historic” as a descriptor of a British Open venue is like using “catholic” to describe the Pope.
They sound drunk.

They're smashed. I imagine the train station and old Montauk highway are filled with drink skanks and bros.

I’m all for the crowd cheering and getting into it, but I’ll never get the appeal of some guys screaming obnoxious guttural sounds the moment a player strikes the ball. As if it’s a who can sound like the biggest douchebag contest.

Agreed.
Two good stories. Koepka 2 US Opens in a row and Tommy Fleetwood's 63 almost 62.
Glad USGA put the water on the greens and place the pins in less dangerous positions. Good come back for them.
Yeah it’s just a bummer, crowd enthusiasm is good, but the drunk jagoffs detract from an otherwise fun Sunday afternoon watching golf

Every tournament, every part of the country, and especially on Sunday, the crowd is filled with drunk frat boy types who think they’re funny and clever with the shit they yell out. I think the gallery needs to police this stuff. Shame the assholes into shutting up.

And they always seem to find the open microphone
Crispy, from my life experience, if they did this or tried to, it would result in fist fights.
I really enjoyed this Open!
McNally, there wasn't shit left in that tent. No hats or polos, just some women's t-shirts and novelty items (ball markers, towels, flags, etc...). They must have really got cleaned out on Saturday, because they also didn't have enough beer out on the course!
To answer your question, I believe they are still open today and whatever is left goes online.

anyone know what they do with the left over merch in the tents?

Damn, I went on Friday and took a walk thru the shop when I first entered and right before I left, I saw a shirt but I didn’t want to miss the train home.
All well, gotta go the eBay route!

Twittersphere on Phil is hilarious this AM, one showing Lebron's arm gesturing pose re. JR Smith superimposed on Phil putting the moving ball and various quips.

To think that Phil didn't know the rule is ridiculous, it seemed to stem from the frustration with the course!
