NFT: Cape May / Wildwood Recommendations Needed

Danny Kanell : 6/18/2018 12:41 pm
I'm heading down to Cape May / Wildwood next week for my daughter's week long dance competition. Need some recommendations for restaurants / things to do. It's my wife and 2 girls (Ages 13 and 10). We're staying a block from the boardwalk in Wildwood so recs can be anything from on the boardwalk or somewhere where we need to drive to in Cape May, Wildwood or anywhere else in the area. We're pretty much open to anything / any type of food / activity and we've never been down there before (We'll be there Sunday 6/24 - Sat 6/30 if that matters).

Oh and some of us Dads are going to try to golf once or twice so any golf course recommendations / tips would be appreciated too.

Thanks!
Sorry no advice

other than if you haven't been be prepared for more white trash than you'd see at a cheap campground.

Cape May is a billion times nicer than Wildwood. I'd stay there as much as conveniently possible.

lol oh boy. The competition is in Cape May Courthouse so it's actually closer to Wildwood and there will be alot of back and forth driving so most of us chose Wildwood / North Wildwood to stay. Should be interesting.
Cape May Courthouse

is close to Avalon and Stone Harbor. Many nice restaurants
in those towns vs Wildwood. Go to the Cape May Zoo. If you have never been you will be surprised at how big it is.
Avalon Golf Club

Georges place in Cape May (near Congress Hall) is fantastic and has bee featured on the food network. It's inexpensive and very good quality, but usually a line to get in
Go to the Cape May Peanut Butter Company

the Butterscotch and Cappuccino flavors are incredible.
If time allows you can also...

...take a short ferry trip from Cape May into Delaware. You have the Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats off the Rehoboth Boardwalk.

The Ebbit Room at the Virginia Hotel is very good for dinner.

Better suited for adults if you and your wife get a dinner out.
Cape May National is a good course, although it’s been awhile since I’ve been. Better course is Shoregate, which is a little further away, inland from Sea Isle City. Probably about a 25 minute ride from Cape May, but worth the trip.

Oh, one little tip: go to Sunset Beach in CM one evening to see the sun set over the bay. It’s really beautiful, and there is a place over there for ice cream and mini golf.

Enjoy your trip.

I second Sunset Beach. We would go to Lobster House and get take out and picnic on the beach watching the Sunset!

Wildwood Creast is 100 % nicer than Wildwood residential and doesn’t have the Boardwalk and all the low life’s as in Wildwood. Always liked Mulligans on the boarder of Wildwood and the crest. Okay for pub food and a beer. North Wildwood has a couple of Irish Pubs don’t remember names.
Been a while but

Family used to vacation in WW Crest - really good restaurants were Duffy's By the Lake (seafood), Duffinetti's (Italian) and my fave was the Two Mile inn - on the way to Cape May before the toll bridge - best crabs down there. Enjoy!

I like Sapore & Freida's in Cape May. Mad Batter for breakfast.

Check out Cape May winery & the brewing company.
My family lives in Cape May

I'd recommend the Mad Batter for breakfast. Its wonderful.

For dinner, the Merion Inn and Peter Shields are both excellent choice.

The Washington Inn used to be pretty good as well.

The Lobster House is your place for sea food. The lines shouldn't be bad since the summer season isn't in full swing yet. The Raw Bar at the Lobster House is my favorite because of the atmosphere. When I was younger, my uncle was a charter boat captain and after a tuna charter or something else we would bring our haul to the docks by the lobster house, sell it and than grab a beer and dinner or lunch.

and is great!

We airbnb'ed a house in North Cape May a block from the beach, and it was great. The water is less wavy and safer for the small children.

I like the Blue Pig restaurant at Congress Hall. Lovely town.
Kids will enjoy the rides at Wildwood
spike : 6/18/2018 4:42 pm : link
the crowds are definitely rowdier at WW than Cape May.
My 2 cents

First of all good luck to your daughter in the competition. My daughter did that same competition for a couple years. Its a looooooong stressfull week. ENJOY!!

The first year we stayed at some motor inn on the parkway because it was close to the competition. no good. The other 2 years we rented a house by wildwood and that was so much better. i dont know where you are staying but the main thing is that food, beach, boardwalk, etc are in walking distance. This way the groups of kids can get together and just walk to where they have to go instead of trying to figure out how many are going where and how many cars are needed and which parent is going where.

For breakfast the Mad Batter is a must. Or if you are going to be going to the boardwalk in Cape May then Uncle Bill (or Uncle Bob) Pancake house right across the street from the boardwark is decent and very convenient.

Sunset Beach is also a must for you and the wife. without a doubt.

I dont really remember the name of much of the other restaurants but there are a bunch right in the wildwood area that were in walking distance. Again being able to have any amount in a group just walk instead of all agreeing to one place or having to figure out how many want to go where and in which cars is the key.

i never went to the zoo but i hear that its pretty good. The dads typically skipped the zoo trip and hit the bar!!

I liked the beach in cape may a lot better than the beach in wildwood but it was the opposite for the teens. Wildwood is a lot more entertaining. But if the adults want a nice beach day definitely hit Cape May.

Campground called "Lake Laurie" still in Cape May? Stayed there over 40 years ago, when you didn't have to pay for beach passes. I remember the Lobster House and a tavern with the the best clam chowder and corned béef with swiss on rye called " The Ugly Mug.Also I remember a sunken concrete ship still visible. Oh and a big King Kong on the boardwalk. Good Times!!!

The restaurants in Wildwood and Wildwood Crest

are not that good in general. Lots of horrible tourist traps. Cape May would be a little better but the best idea is to go little north to Avalon and Stone Harbor as others have mentioned.
tisha's is great as well
jd311 : 6/18/2018 9:33 pm : link
on washington mall in cape may. cape may brewery is a cool stop, crest tavern, mulligans - for some cheaper bar food. panicos in cape may is byob and great italian (may have to wait) . sure wildwood may not be as "sophisticated" as cape may, but still a good time for what it is.

Keith Laudeman? My aunt and uncle are close to the Laudemans. Never had to wait for a table there. :-)

Just wanted to chime in here since I’m down here right now. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was so bad at our hotel (drunk, belligerent literal scum of the earth white trash screaming and blasting music until 2am and the hotel did nothing) that we forced a refund out of them, checked out this morning and thankfully found a really nice place last minute in Avalon. I’m not the person that generally complains but this was the worst thing I’ve ever seen. And Wildwood itself is just as bad. Man I wish I started a thread before we booked it. Thank God I was able to salvage it.
i would stay in cape may

Why? Literally every other shore town is better than Wildwood.
I was just in Cape May

and took a ride to Wildwood because I haven’t been there in a long time. I remember it not being as trashy as it is now. I forgot about the mile walk to the beach.

The clincher for me even before the people loud all night was we were walking to a restaurant and I saw a pregnant woman smoking with another kid in tow almost get mowed down by a shirtless guy in a 20 year old pick up truck who was almost definitely drunk as evidenced by the screaming match that ensued.

Wildwood in its day was really something, side shows, high divers, Polynesian fire dancers, the pork roll grill. Was a really unique resort town. Diamond Beach (just south) had some great night clubs and restaurants. Not anymore.
We went to ww last summer
