This is a sad read
McNeil
Metnut : 6/19/2018 10:40 am : link
might end up being "found money." Even Daniel Murphy was a "poor man's Daniel Murphy" until second half 2015 (after which Alderson promptly let him walk our division rival so he could trade to Neil Walker).

At the time it seemed most people thought Murphy walking was the right call. Draft pick, similar player for less $, etc.
i think a McNeil

TJ Rivera platoon could work for several years. They both are plus bats, avg. defense, versatile.
Given

how quite they have been in regard to Rivera I bet he had a setback/soreness/

Adrian Hernandez now 2-3. Up to .361 over his first 36 ab's #Mets

Kind of bummed he opened in the DSL vs. GCL

Should be very soon. Oddly enough, the Kingsport guy said he would be playing for them but he's on the GCL roster and Resnick (who is seemingly always on point has him in the GCL too).

send JDG to Houston for a Tucker/Whitley headed package without a ton of thought. But he's not going anywhere and he likely shouldn't.
I've come around on resigning JDG

it's just impossible to find guys like him, so if you think you have a prayer of competing in the next 3-5 years it would be futile to deal him, unless the literal deal of the century comes along.

Is it risky to spend big money on a 30 year old? Yes. But if you want to be a championship team you have to take risks. Yes it could backfire if he gets hurt. The Nationals could have very well felt that way when they pursued Scherzer. If he stays healthy like Sherzer or Verlander you have a foundational piece. And since they have the leverage of 2 more years of team control this is the cheapest they will ever be able to get a player like JDG, who just witnessed first hand how quickly things can change for a star pitcher.

That's if you trust the Mets to actually do that. They supposedly talked extension BEFORE this season and couldn't come to an agreement. I don't trust the Mets to actually lock him up. Probably wait too long and deal him when he has 1-.5 years of control. Either you sign him "now" or you trade him. Now meaning before the beginning of next season.

No I don't trust mets management at all. But yes I agree, sign him now to start the clock on big $ years earlier or trade him. There won't be a huge discount for signing 2 years earlier, but the benefit is you can hopefully get a favorable structure for his age 34+ seasons. So give him big raises next 2 years, fair market value for age 33/34 years, hopefully get favorable structure for the final 2 or 3 years.
