Cut Jose Reyes. McNeil can play LF and leave Dominic Smith at 1B as a platoon with Flores. When you trade Cabrera, Flores can play full time at 2B.

why not give Alonso a look at 1b? What better place to start than Coors field?

I think they want to see Alonso get some decent time in AAA first. Also want to see if Dom can do with extended ABs in the majors this year. You have to find out one way or another if hes going to amount to anything. You dont want to bring up Alonso and then have to send either him or Dom back down if/when Cespedes comes back.

I don't think they want Smith to play the outfield. Ideally, he'd seize the first base job and mash there for a decade. Given that he's not doing that, and he's probably going to be on the bench a lot, he needs some versatility. He can't be a first-base-only guy as a reserve in this era of baseball, with big pitching staffs and short benches.

I think Smith has a short time in which to show something. Doubt they want to bring Alonso up before September, and maybe not even then, but if he's killing it at AAA and Smith is fizzling in the bigs, Alonso could force their hand.
