as we get closer to August this will work as ever since the DTV and AT&T merger happened they're just not the same company in terms of customer service and trying to retain accounts. I'll give it a try this year but doubt I will be able to get very far. I barely, barely was able to get a discount last year. I do think this will be the first season since 1999 that I will not have the NFL Ticket. Thank goodness I am in South Florida so most of the Giant games will be on local TV. This is the year I probably will be headed to the sports bar 3-5 times.
In 5 years of having DTV....I called in telling the rep that I've been a great customer (I have the highest package of channels + HBO/Showtime/Sports Pack and NBA League pass every year along with ST) and told them that I know several people NOT on the first year of their contract who are getting ST for almost free. He put me on hold for 5 mins then offered me $50 off my bill for 12 months (but ST max remains $390 for the year) but obviously this is like getting ST for free plus $210...

Agreed. I've been a customer for over 10 years... no choice up here. No cable, no over the air channels. Ever since the merger, the price is rising, customer service sucks. Local Fox carries Giants, unless there's a conflict with the Patsies. Usually affects one game a year, no biggie. When this contract runs out, I'm going month to month and hoping for alternatives.
They are offering all kinds of promos if you are an AT&T wireless customers, but it doesn't help here as cell service is unreliable.
They did send me an online survey recently and I had fun crapping all over them. Somehow, I don't think I'll be one of the winners of a $50 card!
I followed the instructions below (my contract was going to run through November). I got 2 new free HD DVR's to replace old ones and $50 per month off my bill for 12 months on a 12 month contract.
* Call 1800-531-5000
* Say "cancel service" to the robot when it asks why you're calling. Confirm it and say no to moving. This should get you to the loyalty department.
* Tell the rep that you are thinking about switching to another TV provider for a better price (helps if you can mention a specific provider and offer) and ask nicely if there's any offers that DirecTV has available to lower your price and retain your business.
If it doesn't work hang up and call back later and try a different rep.

The pricing is about the same as the DirectTV satellite packages $300/$400 for max.
