Giants 2018 Positional Breakdown: Running Backs - ( New Window )

I tend to be an "old school off-season" optimist. Last year, during camp, I was home mending from a VA hospital stay and spent my time on BBI posting, discussing and sometimes even debating why I thought the Giants would be no worse than 10-6. Boy was I wrong! Whew.

This year I'm optimistic about our running backs because I truly believe Saquon Barkley will be SPECIAL. He goes from 0 to 60 in like 2 steps which is unreal. LOL.

I also think our starting OL has the "potential" to be decent enough. Last year's OL was a joke.

Barkley, Gallman rotation will be good and Stewart will be the leader, teacher and short yardage bull. I pray they stay healthy and give us a balanced attack.
Excellent write up Eric like a Pro !

I am salivating to see this Kid play . I wanted him before the season even ended but I didn't think we had a prayer
in getting him . A few of his highlights come to mind one
was the Rose Bowl run Vs. USC . Thats a one of a kind !
The second thing was the energy stamina . He takes Kick off
back like 104 yards then continues to run through the entire endzone an back up the sidelines halfway back up the field . He will be a factor late in games when the defense
tires and breaks your back with a long run . Too much hype I don't think so he will change this offense immediately !
This OL just has to be respectable.....

As I said before, the difference between Darkwa/Gallman and SB is, a crease gets Darkwa/Gallman 4-6 yards, Barkley gets a first down and more....

It's just hard to imagine the options available to Eli on 3rd and short, now......I see play action to Barkley, driving defenses nuts.....

If we can somehow land that second WR, or if Cody pans out, the potential of the offense depends on Eli....there is no way either of the other qbs can step in......Eli has to click with second year TE, Double E.....OBj has to be all the way back.....SS has to step up......and the chemistry between Eli and SB, has to be there.....

We, or rather Eli, has suffered though 6 seasons of futility with our OL......there has been no improvement over the years...yes, it is kind of wishful thinking that all of a sudden we can turn this around.....but this line has been so bad, personnel wise and coaching wise.....we are asking a lot....that a rookie can just step in at LG, and a FA at RG.......That a Canadian refugee, can anchor the line at center......and that a LT, that should have been a RT, somehow puts it all together at that position....

Can Shurm instill confidence in this offense after 2 poor seasons? It remains to be seen.....On paper this offense has the chance to be awesome......But we have seen a lot of paper Giants the last few seasons......But Eli is running out of time.....just have to hope that somehow Shurm turns this offense around, and that the defense, somehow comes together as the season progresses....if that happens, OMG!
Stewart's age

I envision them taking on four backs in the depth chart. Thing is, that player is most likely going to be inactive. So maybe they will keep one HB and plus maybe Shane Smith.
Three points:

1) Yep, 17 rushing TD's in the past three seasons is pathetic.
2) Yep, wear and tear is something the coaches must monitor. Stamina and durability are much bigger issues for linemen and RB's than anyone else.
3) SB gives us a better outside running threat than we've had in forever. I hope we can block the edge.
I'm always suspicious of hiring anybody to be ...

A "mentor" to anybody else. If it's in the nature of a particular vet to be helpful that way, fine; else it is no reason to factor this in.

If Barkley can block and break tackles

he will be superman. If he can block but not break tackles, I will nevertheless be ecstatic. Tiki was elusive, fast, and a terrific blocker. Because he didn't have the size and power to break tackles, he wasn't superman. But he was damn good. If Barkley is as good, I will be more than satisfied.
