NFT: Travelling from Rome to Amalfi Coast Question

NYGmen58 : 6/20/2018 2:52 pm
I am headed to Italy for 10 days in August and have flights and hotels booked and will be flying in/out of Rome. We will be going straight from the airport in Rome to Positano, so was wondering what the best way to get there from Rome is and how to do so.

I figured the logical thing to do is first take the train from Rome to Naples. Which is the closest train station to the airport? Is this a high-speed train or regular train, or is there much of a time difference between the two?

Once we arrive in Naples, should we take a car/taxi to Positano (seems pricey) or is there an easy ferry that runs somewhat frequently that we could get, and if so, how/where do we purchase tickets?

After Positano, we are going to Capri for a few days before going back to Rome. I assume just do the reverse of what we did to get to Positano to get back to Rome from Capri?

Any insight or advice from experienced travelers would be much appreciated!
I envy you

About 2 months ago I saw the Amalfi Coast on a travel show. Looks like one of the nicest places on Earth. Take pics and post them here when you get back. Have fun!
I've done the reverse trip

I went from Praiano to Rome. You'll want to just take the train to Naples and then a bus to your hotel in Amalfi. I can't remember the details of how I found the bus but that's how I did it to avoid the expensive taxi. The bus ride is bat shit crazy. The roads on the coast are very tight and the bus perpetually feels like it's going to go over the cliff. They honk twice before every corner to avoid collisions. It makes for one heck of a ride. The views are off the charts, though. Have fun in Italy.
Last year I rented an SUV and drove

love the challenging roads and also the independence that a car gives you. Went all over, Ravello, Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento, you name it roads were awesome and the views spectacular... NJoy
You’d take a train from Rome to Naples, train in Italy is

reliable, frequent, and fairly cheap. I’m sure there is a bus from Naples to Sorrento and Positano, but that sounds like a terribel ordeal with luggages. I’d recommend finding a tour guide company that takes you from Naples to Positano in a nice car, many offers stops at a pizza place in Naples and Pompeii. You can easily find highly reviewed companies on Trip Advisor.
I am going

to the Amalfi Coast on Friday for 10 days as well.

You can take the train from Rome to Salerno (changing in Naples) and then a ferry from Salerno to Positano. It is a beautiful boat ride. It all takes about three and a half hours.

I happen to be flying to Rome tomorrow night and using the train for the first time. FCO (Fiumincino) airport to 'Roma Termini' (which is Rome's central station) from there I am going to Napoli Central. There is a ferry in Naples that will take you along the Almafi coast.

I am going to be in a town called Lioni in Avelino.

I was just in Positano a few weeks ago, went to Rome afterwards. Took the train to Salerno from Florence and the ferry (Travelmar) to Positano. Then ferry to Salerno and train to Rome on the way back. Very easy. Train is two hours, Ferry is about another 1.5 hours all in, stops in Amalfi first. But the ride is beautiful, sit up top and enjoy the view.

I think you will miss something taking a car or bus because one of the best aspects of the coast is actually getting off land on the water so you have a view of everything.

going to and from Positano to Capri, I would recommend getting a private boat at least one-way and have the driver take you to all of the grottos around Capri.
I did basically that same trip

but on a much shorter time frame and drove.

Loved the freedom but did scratch up the car mirror in a tight alleyway in Sorrento

Take the train into Salerno

And then go tothe port and take the ferry to Amalfi. Convenient and cost effective
Have a great time!

Stayed with the wife in Capri for a few nights. Truly one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

We got an early train out of Rome. Driver met us in Naples and we stopped in Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius for a few hours of sightseeing before he dropped us at our hotel in Positano.
Train to Naples

Then the local train to Sorrento. Then the bus to Positano.

Don’t drive unless you have nerves of steel. Crazy hairpin turns with crazy Italian drivers honking at you.

Is your place in Positano or outside the town?

Also definitely take the boat from Positano to either Amalfi or Capri. Really easy. Also, it’s Italy so always ask where the bus or train leaves from. Don’t rely on signs

That sounds like a great choice. How was Pompeii?

Pompeii was enjoyable. Good for a few hours. My teenage kids liked it. Walk around the ruins. It gets hot but if I remember correctly some shaded areas. There is a short hike up Mount Vesuvios which is a short drive from the ruins. Wear good shoes I think that hike was graded with gravel or rocks. Sandals or flip flops wont cut it.
We did Rome to Capri to Positano.

We took the high speed train from the Termini in Rome to Naples. Cab line at the Naples train station wasn't too long of a wait, and it's a short ride to the ferry port. There are ferries to wherever you want to go on the Amalfi coast.

I'd say enjoy, but how could you not...

but if you go to Capri, take a bus up to Anacapri and do the Mt Solaro chairlift and look up a little pizzeria called Aumm Aumm. Best pizza and pasta I've ever had. Ate there 3 nights in a row,
I literally did this on Thursday
PatersonPlank : 6/24/2018 3:37 am : link
I would recommend the bus to Salerno and then ferry to Amalfi. Each is like 30-40 minutes. The bus ride takes you 3 hours through windy, narrow roads in the cliffs. It sounds good until about hour 2 when I started getting car sick.
We did it slightly different
Matt M. : 6/24/2018 7:09 am : link
We went from Rome to Capri and then Positano. We took the train from Rome to Naples. I think we purchased tickets online ahead of time, but I may be wrong on that. We took a ferry to Capri and a few days later took a ferry fdom Capri directly to Positano. WE purchased ferry tickets ahead of time. I believe there is also a ferry from Naples direct to Positano.

The one thing we would have done differently is splurged for 1st Class on the train. I believe that has reserved seats, they are roomjer, and there is more foom for luggage. It is about 3 hours and was fine, but it was cramped anx a scramble for seats. The tdain was full. But, it still was not an unpleasant ride.

While on Capri we rented a private boat instead of one of the commercial boats for the Blue Grotto. This way we toured all the grottos and the rest of the island. We actually got out and swam in one of the grottos. And he took us to a fabulous "deli" beforehand for delicious sandwiches to enjoy on the boat.
On thd return from Positano to Naples

we hired a car. From there we took a much longer ferry to the Aeolian Islands.
