NFT: Anyone join Moviepass

Essex : 6/21/2018 11:33 am
I live in NYC and I have two small kids, so the movies is a place we frequent a lot. Each time I go, the tickets are about 16 bucks for me and the wife and 12 for the kids. That is 56 bucks, if we go twice a month that would be 112. My local theater participates in this moviepass. If moviepass is 10 bucks a month, my first trip will be 40 bucks and then free for the rest of the month. So I am saving 16 bucks on the first movie and every other movie that month is virtually free. What am I missing, there has to be some catch? Was wondering if anyone is a member and am I right in my assessment that this is a no brainer? Didn't know about this Moviepass until I read about it yesterday.
It takes forever to get your card

and their extremely high burn rate suggests that they'll be out of business relatively soon. Other than that, there's no catch that I'm aware of.
The catch

They'll go bankrupt soon.
But jump on it until they do.
Yep saves me a ton

as the girlfriend and I go to the movies a lot.
It's great. Only took me like 6 days to get my card (when they first went to $9.99 it was really slow I am told)

I expect they go out of business soon (they are paying full price to the theater for every movie - don't see any way that is sustainable) but use it up while you can
AMC

is coming out with their own version. It sounds like it will include IMAX moves in the subscription for $20 a month.

Moviepass is amazing

And everywhere accepts it. Its a MasterCard debit card. MP loads the card with money right before you buy it. If they accept MasterCard, they accept Moviepass.

The limitations are- 1 movie per day, no repeats, only 2D, and you must be 100 yards of movie theatre to buy (you use an app).
I haven't used it personally...

but two of my sons own it.

One told me he got a discount on his at Costco.

They both go to the movies a LOT (young - lots of dating, etc.), so probably 3-4 movies a month at a minimum. They have been saving a ton with it for over a year now, and it seems fairly simple to use. I've been with them when they use it - they use the app right when they get near the movie theater then receive a ticket at the window. Not quite as simple as cash, but pretty close.

My friend who owned a theater told me there are no profits on ticket sales, only on concessions, so the theaters don't care about the Movie Pass deal. In fact, it's great for him if it gets more people coming to the theaters more often.

Not everywhere accepts it. A lot do but they block theaters that aren't giving them anything and there's another theater in close proximity
You may be too late to the game

but you should get it if you can. They are going to go bankrupt soon.. Its one of the best investments I made for entertainment. my local Regal charges me $14 per movie now me and wife go to 3 movies a month each for $10.. actually cheaper since i brought the annual pass from costco..

Get the pass and use it till it goes bankrupt..
Our family got its money's worth

even though, technically, you have to be 18 and over, we got our son one. Theaters don't care. They get their money regardless.

to see if my local theater (Wappingers Falls, NY 12590) is available before I sign up, but it is not showing anything. My wife tried as well but it doesn't work for her either. I even tried checking NYC but it isn't showing any theaters at all. Are you only able to look once you sign up? I tried on Chrome and Firefox.

Awesome film.
COSTCO members can get a discount

$89.99 for one year, just a one time charge. After that you can cancel or continue the service for $9.99 per month

Don't buy the annual pass from Costco.. They may not survive July their cash reserves and receivables aren't enough to keep up their cash outflows.. just buy the monthly service..

I got mine from Costco in 2017 so we've already got a ton back from them..
I’ve had it since December

and the bankruptcy rumors have been since then. Still using it, still great.

If you have an AMC near you look into theirs. They have their own program.

Their obscene burn rate is very, very real. And it's growing as their membership increases. It feels very much like a built-to-sell start-up based almost entirely upon disruption rather than a long-term business model, IMO.
