NFT: Lawn Fungus

Has anyone else been hit really bad with the brown patches of lawn fungus this year?

Everyone in my entire neighborhood seems to have huge brown patches in their lawns. Mine is one of the better ones but it is still curious as to why this happened more this season than ever before.

I treated the lawn with Scotts Disease Ex in the early spring and again gave it a remedial treatment this last weekend. Aggravating!

All of the rain we rain we got in may/early june

we got is the reason. Fungus thrives on moisture and we had a ton of it.
Yeah it’s been awful...

....the last couple of years. This year especially because of all the rain - when the turf bed is constantly wet and you can’t mow with the required frequency, then temps rise, it kind of creates and incubator for it and can be made worse if you do heavy fertilizer applications in early spring.

I’ve found fungicides to be hit or miss. It should start to let up (in terms of active fungus) now that were getting drier weather. Then the growth encouraged by the late spring/early summer fert should grow out the damage. Mine was mostly gone after I put down my late May Milorganite application.
Your lawn has a pH imbalance

Add limescale with a lawn spreader to lower the pH. Rain is acidic and compiles over time. A cheap solution to a problem that landscapers will overbill you for.

Do it yourself and see the results.

Your welcome. :)

I have a tester for the lawn PH and it was a little off. I added the lime in the early spring. It may be a good idea to put down another pass with the spreader.
