Costa Rica looking ok so far - Brazil in the blues today. Main event is Serbia-Switzerland, which might be a bit testy.

ARG can only advance with 4 points, Iceland wins then a draw with Croatia means ARG can't go forward either way.
How long can Costa Rica hold out?

I think the problem with Iceland winning today would be, even if they both get to four points, the goal differential is huge.

Why does Real Madrid court every other goal keeper in the world when Navas may be a top 5 keeper in his own right? He’s fantastic

I love Keylor, but he's not top 5. He's a good GK, but when you factor in his form, age & injuries over the past year they have to look for a new GK. He made a good amount of errors leading directly to goals this season. I believe the most of any La Liga GK in all competitions. Also he was at or near the top in errors in the Champions League. Also he's getting up there in age and had a major injury last season that he never seemed to really come back from.

The way Argentina has played the last two games I'm not sure if it matters. Nigeria has looked like the far superior team and I'm not sure if Argentina can run with Nigeria. Also Dalić has said he's going to be resting players against Iceland. So Iceland should be able to beat them and they have a better goal differential as of right now.
Croatia's B team should still be stronger than Iceland

I keep seeing people blaming every Argentina player except Messi. Like they don't have talent on their team. They have plenty of talent. Dybala, Aguero, Di Maria, Otamendi, Biglia, Banega, Lo Celso, Pavón, Higuian.

Messi just isn't the same player when he doesn't have guys like Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Rakitic, Suarez, Coutinho & Neymar around him.

Also Messi should be getting blamed for the power he has in the national team. He should be blamed for leaving Icardi at home. Icardi definitely deserved to be in the World Cup, but didn't get that chance because Messi doesn't like him. Yet nobody says anything about it. Can you imagine the outrage if Cristiano forced a 25 year old with 113 goals out of the team? They'd want to literally crucify him.

It obviously depends on who they sit, but them sitting Lukita will have a big impact on Croatia. He's the engine that runs that team. We are going to see a huge drop off from what we saw yesterday IMO. Iceland isn't great by any means, but they did play very well against Argentina.

Unless Argentina plays completely different then they have the first two games I'd be very surprised to see them go through.

Messi doesn't even look like he's interested in playing. Yesterday was one of the worst 3 games I've ever seen him play.

What isn't true from my post? Argentina has talent. The guy whose labeled best player in the World has looked like shit. Not because of lack of talent in Argentina. Messi isn't nearly the same player for Argentina that he is for Barcelona. Messi left Icardi out of the squad because he doesn't like him personally.
I'm sure everybody knows about him by now

If you don't I say pay attention to Sergej Milinković-Savić for Serbia. It's a real treat to watch him play. He's a 6'3 Midfielder that plays like he's 5'8. Will soon be one of the most expensive players ever and he's only 23. Has some Zidane to his game.

The part where you're acting like Messi is simply a product of the players around him at Barcelona is laughable.

This has been coming for Argentina. They wouldn't even be at this world cup if Messi hadn't dragged them there with a hat trick on the final day of qualification. All of their talent that you list is attacking talent. Higuain, Di Maria, and Dybala didn't even start yesterday. So I'm not sure where Icardi is fitting in. They have no quality in the midfield or defense. Otamendi stinks, Mascherano is ancient. Messi has to drop deep just to get the ball. There is no service to the attack.

Let's not act like he hasn't had success at the international level. He led them to the world cup final.

His goal scoring record for country is virtually identical to Ronaldo's, since I know you're just going after Messi because you're Ronaldo's biggest fan. Fortunately for Ronaldo, his team won their major tournament final after he got hurt. Otherwise their record is pretty much the same.

And Messi will catch plenty of criticism for this in his home country. So the part where you're saying nobody is blaming him is also untrue.
Who said he's a product of Barcelona?
Big Rick in FL : 6/22/2018 2:47 pm : link
It's not the only reason he is good, but it certainly helps to have those guys around him. He's clearly not as good for Argentina as he is for Barcelona.

Lo Celso is a good midfielder. Banega is a good midfielder. Pavón has played and succeeded as a midfielder.

You can blame their defense all you want, but the attack including Messi hasn't been good. They've scored 1 goal in 2 games. They are currently sitting 4th in their group because of a missed Messi penalty. He certainly hasn't come anywhere close to living up to the best player ever designation that a lot of people give him and yes because of that I hold him to higher standards.

This has nothing to do with me liking Ronaldo. I just think it's absurd that Messi keeps getting a pass for coming up small in big situations.

Yeah they went to a World Cup, but did Messi really have anything to do with it? Didn't score a goal after the group stage. Di Maria won them the game in the Round of 16 against Switzerland. Higuian won them the quarterfinals game against Belgium. He didn't score against Netherlands in the semi-finals.

Not even gonna mention the 3 losses in the Copa America Finals combining for a grand total of 0 goals in those 3 games.

Once again it has absolutely nothing to do with Ronaldo. I like Messi. To be he's the 2nd best player ever. I just think it's weird how one of the top 2 players of all time avoids criticism after constantly coming up small in the biggest games.
Kyle
Big Rick in FL : 6/22/2018 3:09 pm : link
If Ronaldo constantly came up small in big games I'd call him out too. If he had 0 goals, 0 assists and a missed penalty through his first two games I'd be just as hard on him as I am on Messi. Actually probably would be harder on him.

He hasn't though. He's been phenomenal and is literally the only reason they have 4 points. Portugal doesn't have anywhere near the talent that Argentina does. He has 4 goals and should have at least 2 assists. Unfortunately for him Guedes has looked like a dear in the headlights otherwise Portugal would be at the top of their group.
Granit Xhaka!!

Messi did have a huge hat trick to secure Argentina’s spot in the WC. They were on the brink.

And he did lead Argentina to the finals in 2014 against Germany. I get the sense too many people - not saying you - forget about that...

Who do you think set up the Di Maria goal against Switzerland? Video is linked below. He's part of the build up to that Higuian goal. And he scored in the penalty shootout to beat the Netherlands. Sure, he didn't score after the group stage (where he had four goals). But he was everything for that team.

He has no international experience because Messi doesn't like him. You can't really knock him for that. Diego Maradona is a fucking idiot. Who cares what he says? The leading scorer in Serie A who scored 29 goals should be going to the World Cup.

I guess we will agree to disagree. I feel he should be doing a lot more for Argentina.

Also criticizing Ronaldo as a player and person is a whole lot different. He's a great person off the field who got fucked over by the crooked Spanish government so of course I'm going to stick up for him. Just like the crooked government fucked over Messi, Alexis Sanchez, Mourinho, Mascherano etc etc.

I have no problem criticizing him for his play though. I did many times at the beginning of this La Liga season. I'll do the same for Keylor, Benzema, Bale, Ramos, Kroos, Lukita and every other Real Madrid player.

Messi led a dysfunctional Argentina to three consecutive finals. And the other two World Cups the team was not competently managed (Maradona in 2010 and Sampaoli now). If Messi came up small for Argentina they wouldn't even be in the tournament. They certainly don't deserve to be.

You can knock Messi to make Cristiano look better all you want, but they aren't in the same class. They never have been.

That is exactly why he's not with Argentina. Many former Argentinian's have said so. You'd be calling Ronaldo the biggest piece of shit if he did what Messi is doing to Icardi.

Now we are going to blame the coach that Messi handpicked to be the coach? (Barcelona's papers reported this)

You're right. They aren't on the same level. One constantly comes through in the clutch & has dominated the two best leagues in the World while winning a major trophy for his country. The other hasn't. Glad we can agree on that Terps!

The reasons why this comparison is stupid are too numerous to list. Cristiano isn't even the best goal scorer I've seen. He ain't the real Ronaldo. That guy was an alien.

Cristiano deserves a lot of credit for how he's changed his game as he's aged. But that doesn't make him Messi.

He has 451 goals in 437 games for Real Madrid. What a fucking scrub. He's 20 goals ahead of everybody in Champions League history. He's got 4 of the top 5 goal scoring performances in a single UCL season. He's got like 20 more knockout stage goals then anybody in UCL history. He's got more goals then any other European for his national team and he's 2nd all time out of all international players. Nope not the best goal scorer ever though.

Does Cristiano get criticism for not doing shit in La Liga this season until it was already over? What did he have, 4 goals in the first 20 matches or so?

He did what he's good at after the season was over: pad his goal numbers and act like it mattered.

Cristiano absolutely got shit for his first half of the season and I was the first to criticize him. He was really bad at the beginning of the season. That's why we ended up so far back.

I disagree about him padding his stats though. If he wanted to pad his stats he would have played against the teams like Leganes, Celta Vigo, Malaga etc etc which didn't happen. He didn't play in a lot of the games against bottom half teams.

No matter how far back you are you still have to try and catch up. Like I said he didn't even play against the lesser teams yet he won more points then any other La Liga player. He won us 18 points in 27 games which is absurd. Iago Aspas was second with 17 points won, but he played 7 more games.

He also came up huge time after time in the Champions League. We would have never been in the Final without him. The only reason we got past PSG & Juve is because of him. So I don't think anybody can really say he was padding stats. Even if you want to use that for 2018 that's really the only season you can use it for, but it's utterly insane to say a guy whose sitting against bad teams is trying to pad stats.
