NFT: NFT-NGT- Spotted Lantern Flies

GiantBlue : 6/22/2018 9:26 am
Living here in SEPA, one of our big problems is the spotted lantern fly. like the stinkbug, it has come out of containers from China and they attack maple trees among others. The suck the sap from the tree and leave a fungus that will ultimately kill the tree.

I understand they have been here since 2014 and our county (Berks) is quarantined from shipping out trees/shrubs, etc. because the adult females attach egg sacs to the branches that ultimately hatch in the spring.

One solution is to put duct tape around the tree; sticky side out to trap the nymphs and ultimately the flies (actually they look like moths). They are trying to come up with a pesticide for this creature, but there isn't a clear cut option yet.

Does anyone else have these in their area yet and if so, what are you doing to combat these destructive pests? I understand that if they migrate in a widespread way, they could be very destructive to our forests.
