do you think are headcases. It's just mindboggling to me that some of these guys can't just focus on their jobs like every other working american. Just last year, on the Giants, you could call Hart, Flowers, Apple, DRC, Jenkins all headcases from time to time. It seems like it's as much as 20%. These guys are being paid millions, they can't just act normal?
That being said, why are NBA such pre-madonnas?
I think things are exaggerated to a certain degree by social media. In the past, players wouldn't expose themselves to greater criticism because there was no social media. Also on the fan side, we were not constantly bombarded and/or craving social media and 24/7 "news" updates. So it's been a bit of a self-destructive, self-fueling spiral.
At the same time, I think the NFL has been "Hollywood-ized" and many of the athletes have been given an inflated view of self-importance. This isn't all on them either. Look at the stupid red carpet crap even at the NFL Draft.
That all said, one could argue there were many more "bad eggs" on the older Giants teams that us old timers tend to glamorize. Much of their dirt was swept under the rug.
They can either make a lot of money, and have some celebrity, or be out of the league (without a lot of high paying job skills) at a moments notice.
You seem to have an idealistic view of NFL players, which just isn’t accurate. These guys go through shit just like you and I do (presumably in a higher pressure environment) and it’s magnified due to pretty much always being in the public eye, and having millions of strangers dissecting everything they do.
Your perception of this could be due to many factors including observer bias, the media and/or the effect of wealth on behavior. But its pretty boring to go further.
Pretty much this.
do you not watch the evening news? do you really think "every other working American" only focuses on their jobs?
That being said, why are NBA such pre-madonnas?
NBA players are before Madonna?
It’s just that when bob the data analyst roughs up his wife or girlfriend we won’t see the news of this plastered all over Twitter.
When you run in certain circles you can forget about that part of America, but it's real and part of their everyday life. Some athletes come from that background and it's harder for them to stay out of trouble.
Wow!!!!
That being said, why are NBA such pre-madonnas?
as in prima donnas?
That being said, why are NBA such pre-madonnas?
i guess i have been spelling this wrong all these years...

Football is one of the most violent modern-day sport. I'm surprised the psyche of these players isn't even more nuts.

I thought they were post-Madonnas!
There s always been jerks, we just know more about it now.
- how many have been given a pass by friends, community, teachers, law enforcement because they are a popular sports figure
- how ?many get away with stuff due to their earning power when assaulting women, etc ?
- how many would actually be in jail/prison if not employed by a professional sport organization, or college?
By and large, fans suck and have wildly ridiculous expectations for grown men they don’t know who play a game for a living.
DRC was a 10-year vet who clashed with the coaches. It happens. There was another guy who didn't like the coaches plans for him at one point last year but no one would call him a head case (nor should they).
In the 60's and 70's there were stars but, most of them still had to work a 2nd job during the off season to pay the bills. In today's game it seems like if you make a roster spot that is your full time job - and you are and automatic celebrity.
Plenty of them grow up or course, but there is less incentive to do so.
From my beloved Mickey Mantle to our LT's Chants .
Social Media is addictive and destructive .
