For those interested in learning/reading more about the 3-4, this is a nice simple resource.
Over the years I know a lot of people here were very strong supporters of the 4-3. As a former high school football coach/defensive coordinator, I always found the 3-4 much more flexible and allowed for significant variations that could be used with base personnel. The 4-3 was not as friendly.
Enjoy and enjoy our new defense in 2018. What I love about the new DC is he loves to attack.
3 Philosophies of the 3-4 Defense - (
New Window )
The 3-4 is very similar to the old 5-2/5-2 Bubble w/ "walkways"---- and you'll see more and more "2-5"---that's knid of a 4-3 with Walkaways
The players are more talented---and the rules make the the defense much more accountable to space--- the defense will come from multiple agngles with lot's of guys who can stand and attack/stand and cover.
Whatever the Sceme---the recent teams have been to low on speed and talent and depth on both sides of the ball----they were limkited in their tools to creat attack and defend against attacking athletes.
I think they're thin at lots of places....but the approach is a big up tick
