NYP: Plaxico Burress Talks About Today's NYGs

Eric from BBI : Admin : 6/24/2018 9:05 am
Quote:
Plaxico Burress was back at MetLife Stadium on Saturday wearing a Giants jersey, talking about the 2007 team and how it won the Super Bowl. And he said he likes the direction these Giants are headed.

He talked about how the running game headed by Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw helped make him a better a receiver and how the same could happen for Odell Beckham if Saquon Barkley is as good as advertised.

Giants Super Bowl hero has advice for getting back there - ( New Window )
Did Burress have a career post Giants?

Sorry for the thread sidetrack, but I'm having trouble remembering what happened the season after he shot himself.

How did it end for him here and what happened next?

He played with the Jets in 2011 (he was with them in the game where Cruz went 99 yards) and with the Steelers for a few games in 2012.
Really good NFL wide receivers are fun to watch

Even in the NY media, Plax didn’t make the team all about him like the rest of these guys do.
Sure He was arrogant, immature, selfish and got into the typical trouble of that life, but up until shooting himself he did it within the boundaries of being a great team player.
Too bad this other clown of a star can’t figure that out before it’s too late.

Thats because Plaxico had already matured a bit from his time with the Steelers (though how much is debatable). He didnt come to New York until he was 28. Odell is 25.

I'll never forget that NFC Championship Game in Green Bay in 2007

before SB42. Green Bay had 2 pro bowl corners and decided that they'd sell out to stop the Giants running game because of the awful conditions. Al Harris got to guard Burress and Burress had his number. Burress was targeted 13 times by Eli and he caught 11 of them for 151 yards and he made it look easy.

Al Harris was one of the best press corners in football at that point in time and Burress basically had him on a leash all day. It was fun to watch.

Still to this day, probably the most impressive game of Eli Manning's career. Given the conditions, and the way he was just throwing absolute darts.. he out-dueled a legend on the road that day against all odds.

It's a shame Burress' career ended here the way it did. And it really sucks that the gun incident happened in the middle of one of the best regular seasons we've ever had. But no matter how angry anyone is at him for that, the bottom line is that he beat Ellis Hobbs and caught the game winning touchdown pass against an undefeated team in the Super Bowl to make history for the New York Giants, and that can't ever be forgotten.

Plax deserves credit for his contributions, but let's not rewrite history. In 2008 even before he shot himself he openly groused about his contract, skipped practices, got suspended for a game for bad conduct, and racked up 60K in fines. Sounds about equal to (or worse than) Beckham when it comes to being a "team player."

2008 is very similar to 2002 under the "what could have been only if..." category

Yep, kind of in different ways... but also similar.

The 2008 team looked unbeatable through the first 3/4 of the season with the only hiccup being that loss to Cleveland in prime time. But while the 2008 team stumbled a bit in December, that was where the 2002 team really caught fire.

The 2002 team still had it in the WC game too - I still can't believe it all fell apart the way it did.

The 2008 team just looked like they were out of gas. When Bradshaw ran that opening kick back, I was like "here we go!".. and then we had to settle for 3, and we just couldn't get going offensively that day. Eli was off.. we were just out of sync. Such a frustrating game.

What sucks the most is that we probably end up back in the Super Bowl if we get past the Eagles that day.

But what can you do. Sucks that season ended the way it did. Winning a Super Bowl that year probably would have been a lot like the 86 team (whom I was too young to remember), where the Giants were just the best team in football from start to finish.

At one point we were 11-1 demolishing teams and knocking out QBs weekly. Then freaking Buress shoots himself and it all went off the rails.

Shots fired from a truck lent by a dealer to Burress, and a guy fitting his description fleeing the scene. 13 hours before his first preseason game as a Giant.

Guy was a clown from day 1.

Burress is an interesting case. He really was not a star WR

By any stretch. He was frankly a draft bust. I'm pretty sure I recall the Steelers didn't particularly care to keep him.

Burress was a legit #1. Star or not, I don't know - people have different definitions of that.

But his talent wasn't why PIT wanted to part ways - and he certainly wasn't a bust by any stretch.

He had an outstanding year there in 2002.

He had a really good 2005-2007 here as well. The guy scored 29 times in that 3 year span.

He even managed to find the endzone 8 times at age 34 as a Jet.

Burress was really good.

A grown man harboring this much resentment towards an athlete 10 years after the fact is sad, man. It really is. You need to get over it.
How about you stop caring so much about my posts?

I posted about Plax on a thread about Plax. You manage to try to make it about me.

If you want to be a grown man, you might want to start giving me the same level of attention I give you - none.

Not saying he wasn't great here. He was. But at the time they signed him, it wasn't like they were getting a known star. He was supposed to be a star. They picked him 8th overall. 2002 was his peak and he never got back to that form there. Even the way the Giants ended up getting him illustrated that. Nobody paid him the money he was looking for, and the Giants even walked away from the table at first.

This is revisionist history. In 2008, Plax was openly complaining about his contract and refused to work-out with the team in the off-season. O'Hara openly criticized him in the off-season for refusing to practice with the team without a new contract. The Giants even made him offers which he refused.

He also skipped a practice during the season without calling the Giants causing him to be suspended for one game. Rather than taking the deserved suspension, he appealed it creating more tension with the organization. That was prior to shooting himself in the leg.

This was just in 2008.

He was far from the ultimate team player. Odell, on the other hand, works his ass off. His teammates like him from all reports. He has never been criticized by teammates for skipping practices. He has never been suspended by the Giants for not showing up at a practice during the season and not calling or answering calls.

Your take on Odell being a "clown of a star" and Plaxico being the ultimate team player for his selfishness not affecting the team is complete BS and revisionist history.

I like Plax the player, don't get me wrong. I lvoed watching him and he was an enormous part of that 2007 run. I'm just tired of the hypocritical criticisms from people who adore stars who did things far worse than Odell has.

2008 Giants beat all 4 teams in the AFC\NFC title games that year
NYG27 : 6/26/2018 12:19 pm : link
I think that is a key fact that sometimes gets lost in remembering the potential of that 2008 team.

With Plax, that offense was a fine tuned machine with the focus on the running game. Without Plax, that all changed and defenses now could sell out to stop the run game and Giants passing game really looked out of sync.

With the offense out of sync, the defense was on the field even more and several defensive players wore down late in the season and battled injuries. In the end, Giants were signing guys off the street to field a defense.

In my opinion, if Plax didn't shoot himself, the offense was really unstoppable and eating the clock (First 11 wins, Giants averaged 34+ minutes of ball control offense). That would have kept the defense off the field much more and perhaps limited the amount of injuries that occurred.
