Training camp

WeekendLife56 : 6/24/2018 12:45 pm
The Tiki thread got me thinking/reminiscing about my times at training camp in Albany in the early 2000's
What is your fondest/coolest memories of camp. I got two
....I remember Ike Hillard being the most humble down to earth guy. I mean this guy after EVERY practice would just go down autograph alley and sign untill there was no one left. 1-2 hours a day sometimes.
...and my fondest, One day on the way home me and a buddy on our bikes caught Phillipe Sparks leaving the dining area and naturally we ran up for autos. He told us he couldn't talk because he had Jordan in the car so he didn't have time. He was carrying a box of snickers ice cream bars he took from the dining area. He gave us the whole box minus two one for him and one for Jordan. It wasn't until later in my life I realized how cool a moment that was seeing little jordan in the back seat in her carseat, as she herself grew up to be a successful singer/star in her own right.

to Albany. I went all the time when it was there
I get why the Giants moved it to East Rutherford

but they destroyed how great training camp was for the fans by doing that. Unfortunately it will never be back in Albany.

It's not even worth going to at Quest Diagnostics center
Here's a memory...

I got married in the summer of 1987. After a five-week honeymoon, I took my new wife to training camp for a day. WE sat in the grass near the fence line (it must have been at Fairleigh Dickinson then) while the Giants worked in position groups and Parcells walked around from group to group. AS he did, he looked our way several times. Finally, he stopped and said, "How does an ugly guy like you get a good-looking girl like her?" I replied, "We all get lucky sometimes. Even the Giants!" The Giants, of course, had just won the Super Bowl the previous January.

The really good old days

I used to go to Pace University each year and it was great. Small crowds and close. I'd stand up, holding onto a chain link fence, and be twenty feet from the practice field. The coaches then didn't believe in hydration benefits so they'd scream and curse at the big guys to "get back in and hit".

My goodness, that was forty years ago. A different time. Now, sitting in bleachers or worse, needing binoculars........ why bother? I guess it's still good for the kids.
Buddies and I would make it a 3 day affair

practice/golf/fishing/drinking - small crowds - meeting players in the restaurants and parking lots - we looked forward to it every year.

Went to Giant Stadium last year to watch practice and the line was 1/2 mile long to get in and 10 people deep by the fence.

Miss Albany.
