Mets expected to sign #9 prospect C Francisco Alvarez (offensive minded catcher) and #29 prospect OF Freddy Valdez ($1.5M, "one of most physical players in the class")
They still rarely go after the very top guys. For example... they aren't listed among the likely suitors for Victor Victor Mesa, #1 name on the IFA list. The Dodgers on the other hand routinely are and are expected to sign Diego Cartaya, the #1 non-Cuban. Yankees also are tied to 2 or 3 of the top 10 names (as they routinely are). That said, Mauricio looks good in the early going, Gimenez too. Guerrero and Hernandez look like sunk costs.
Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 40 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50
At 5-foot-11 and 220 pounds, Alvarez is a strong prospect with a stocky build and an offense-oriented set of tools. He has a reputation for hitting well in games, which speaks to his emerging hit tool. He also shows power now and the potential for more in the future. Like most young catching prospects, Alvarez is not known for his running ability.
The teenager's bat stands out more than his glovework at the moment, but he has also shown a good arm and solid defensive actions behind the plate. He is expected to improve on his overall defensive game once he signs with a team and receives daily instruction at a club's academy.
Alvarez's body -- and what it could look like in the future as he grows -- is a concern for some skeptical scouts. His bat has fewer critics. Combine Alvarez's hitting ability with the position he plays, and it's easy to see why the teen is one of the most coveted prospects on the market.
Alvarez is from Guatire, Venezuela, and is trained by Javier Mendoza. The Mets are the favorite to sign him.
Valdez 25

The player who some scouts think Valdez resembles the most is a young Jermaine Dye.
Valdez has built his reputation on his big bat and big body. He's athletic and is able to transfer the raw power he shows off in batting practice into games. There's bat speed now and the potential for plus raw power in the future. There was some swing-and-miss to his game early on, but Valdez has improved his approach at the plate and has what was once considered a "sometimes wild swing" consistently under control.
Valdez could end up in right field and has a chance to be a decent defender, but it's his offensive potential, not his defensive prowess, that will carry him, at least early in his career. He has also been praised for his overall makeup, specifically his competitiveness and the way he enjoys the game.
Valdez is from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and trains with Luis Pereira. The Mets are the favorite to sign him.

for the mets to compete for higher end international prospects. Or is that a misread?

I assume this is simply because they don't want to spend right?
Bautista up.

Another Mets roster move: reliever Gerson Bautista is up from Las Vegas, giving them an extra arm. Luis Guillorme has been optioned following last night's two-error game.

Hopefully this means we get to give Reyes even more of the sendoff he deserves.

They won't go over their budget ie pay the tax.
