The study only tested athletes in high-risk sports for CTE.
The point remains that an adequate baseline for CTE has not been established. There are rumors that Robin Williams may have had CTE.
It is unknown how prevalent CTE is among the general population, or even what the threshold is in athletic endeavors to trigger CTE. Is it from one bad concussion or multiple smaller hits?
I'm sure these things will become clearer as more brains are studied, but there has to be a baseline to help validate the conclusions. Without that, it remains a compelling story, but speculative to cause and effect.
Good question. Because you can get it numerous ways.
they dont just randomly come to the "looks like aged 65" brain without a reason
Not many, which is why all the pointed studies are clear to indicate there are sample biases and further research is needed.
The baseline of CTE in the general population is unknown.

How many deceased are tested for cte who did not play football?

wrong.
it only exists in occupations where hits to the head occur.

The issue is the baseline level of CTE behaviors and then physical symptoms in 21-year-old back-up QBs vs. non-football players.
He was described as having the physical brain of a 65-year-old. Football related? Most likely.
