Good article in the Athletic on Rosas

Ross : 6/27/2018 10:20 am
I can't link or post, but the gist of it is that he's being mentored by John Carney. Carney speaks highly of him and I thinks he's a more refined kicker this year.

The article reinforces the idea that it often takes young kickers a few years to adapt and references plenty of examples of young kickers cut or traded by the Giants having success after they left the Giants. i.e. Stover, Mare, Bryant, McManus and Boswell.

I'm certainly routing for him as he has a big leg and last year, as a whole, the team sucked.
I agree

I think he has a rare leg and worth developing
One of the few benefits of the Giants terrible performance last season

was they were able to let Rosas spend the entire season as the kicker. Had they been in the playoff hunt they surely would have replaced him with a veteran. Rosas was not good last season other than from 50 yards on. He has a big leg and talent though so I am glad they chose to bring him back. If he doesn't improve they could always sign a veteran at the end of camp. I would hate to lose another Boswell or McManus.
Part of his problem is with his form

Most soccer style kickers lean back a little when driving through the ball, Rosas leans way back off the ball which effects the accuracy and height of his kicks

Strong leg?

Based on what? At the bottom of the league on kickoffs

Although to be fair, there were some quotes from last year that the Giants coaching staff liked to have their kickers kick high and short of the goal line to limit the kickoff returns of opposite teams. Rosas did a good job with that with only a 20.5 yard kickoff average on 32 returns. Which was among the best in the NFL last year.
Rosas has not shown the consistency or reliability of a PK

Maybe he needed a year to figure it out, or maybe this is just another example of the inexplicable ineptitude of Ross and Reese. A strong leg means nothing if you can not kick the ball between the up rights. Perhaps he will FIND IT this summer camp or he will be GONE. In any event the Giants need to keep the phone lines open for any and all kickers during the regular season even if he WINS the job. That is why you are better off keeping someone who is consistently accurate in pressure situations rather than rolling the dice with someone with a strong leg.....we will see.
Kickers come and Kickers go

Bill Parcells was aways frustrated with FG Kickers, and went threw many of them. When a kicker gets hot and has a good season he can help you win close games and get you to the playoffs and beyond. If a Kicker can hit a FG from 50 yds out and more he is worth being patient with. He can become a difference maker since you only need to move the ball about 40 yards to score points.
