Barkley vs Iowa: Good video to see what we should expect

Tom from LI : 6/28/2018 8:13 am
If you are like me you have watched all the Barkley highlight videos where he makes opposing defenses look foolish trying to tackle him. They are quite exciting to watch and produce thoughts of how he is going to slice up the NFL.

Not every run is a home run in Barkley's career. I wanted to see what his touches would be more like in a normal game. Can he break tackles? Can he run between the tackles?

I think this video is a good representation of his running style. Iowa was a very physical team and defense.

Needless to say I was impressed.

This kid is going to be great.

is ridiculous. I love how the announcer says, "how did he stay inbounds?" How, indeed! What a beast!
He ran wild against Iowa
David B. : 6/28/2018 9:19 am : link
To balance that out, watch the clips from the Ohio State game where he had a lot of negative runs because he had no blocking and was trying to make something from nothing.

His skill set is off the charts, and he will make huge plays. But he also needs to learn when to just take the cheap 4 yard run and be OK with that. Good news is that he already knows that this is a concept he needs to work on. And he has no end of work ethic to go along with his talent.
I'll say...

I did want us to pick a QB, but watching clips like that and especially the end interview, where you can just see what type of person he is, I can't be mad that we picked Barkley.

I'm looking forward to what he can do in blue.
I've probably seen this video

Barkley is going to be good. I get it. But around here, I get the sense the expectations for the kid are a bit overly inflated.
That's some hype
WideRight : 6/28/2018 11:15 am : link
Good tape, but calling it once-in-a-generation is over stating it quite a bit.

The most impressive thing I saw was how smotthly he catches passes out of the backfield. Basically keeps everything in full stride. That's good for Eli, but I'm not sure Eli wil be good for him. Its just not his strength.
But I thought every time he ran the ball would be like a 20 yard gain.
Brown Recluse : 6/28/2018 11:25 am : link

Disagree. When Eli has had good pass-catchers out of the backfield, he’s done just fine.
LOL...

"Around here"?? Gil Brandt had said Barkley is his highest rated player coming out in the past 20 years. Charlie Casserly has said that Barkley was rated much higher than anyone else this year.

Expectations are high because Barkley has been called by many analysts as the top player in the draft.

That doesn't mean he'll be a star, but to think expectations are just lofty among Giants fans is really missing the big picture
I wouldn't expect

Regarding how many prospects Iowa had, just watch 60 seconds of the clip below, links starts from 42s mark. Talks about Barkley playing as an 18 year old true freshman vs loaded Buckeye defense littered with future high NFL draft picks.

I was speaking with an nfl coach the other day
bradshaw44 : 6/28/2018 2:53 pm : link
at a bbq and he was saying how Barkley was absolutely the best player in the draft by a mile. Said the Giants should be happy they were in a position to take him and they made the right decision as he thought all of the QB's had big red flags. But he went on to say that Guice and several other running backs are going to be very nice rushers as well. The RB class was very deep but SB was on another level since he is more than a running back when it comes down to it.

Are going to find fault with Barkley. But I ask you,....who would you rather have ...a dynamic play maker like Barkley who the Giants listed at the VERY TOP of their Draft board and with a perfect score or another clip board holder sitting behind both Eli and Webb?

You never know if any QB will become a "FRANCHISE QB". Tom Brady was drafted in the sixth round but stubborn people who believe they are only found in the first round continue to belittle this fact. How was he missed? I like Kyle Lauletta's skills better than any of the top QBs taken except for maybe Baker Mayfield who is two inches shorter than Kyle and was off the Board when the Giants picked. And even if the Giants picked #1 they would have taken Barkley. Who is to say that Kyle will not turn into the next franchise QB. We have not yet seen Webb play as a pro and he is 6'5" tall and moves better than Eli based on the limited action he performed in the final pre-season game last year, and he has a strong arm.

What is a "FRANCHISE QB" How do you define this or recognize one based on college play? Do you base this on what the draft gurus say? You see what you get in Barkley...like the Cowboys saw what they were getting when they took Zeke. At the running back position it becomes more obvious who the elite ones are and it is obvious on tape that Barkley is an elite running back. Barkley is better than Tiki Barber was.It is refreshing to see a truly gifted running back like Barkley on the Giants. I think he is the best RB the Giants ever had as a rookie and we don't know where his ceiling is. He is already better than most of the RBs in the league in the combination of running catching and blocking. These are all important skills that he performs excellently. David Wilson may have been faster, but Barkley is the TOTAL PACKAGE.
Lets see him do it against

can be said about every college RB that ever played. You found aren’t providing analysis, you are recycling what’s been said about every prospect that ever played.

We got a really good player, I’ll enjoy watching him break tackles in the NFL.

Well the one I spoke to has a pretty good track record to date, and he's been right about pretty much all the assessments he's given to me thus far. So I think I'll defer to him on this one.

Only time will tell.

Big thing about Barkley is that

he is top of the line WR and a very good blocker. Complete a RB as you can get. Great pick IMO. Hard to find complete backs like him any year.

My point was we can't "expect" the same type of performance SB put up against Iowa. It might happen occasionally, but picking the best game of his college career (most rushing yards) is not really an indication of what will happen in the NFL. I'm excited about him, but expecting 200+ yards per game is a bit much. Clearly, we are all bored

I don't think a single person thinks this though. Its a highlight video showcasing his rare ability at his size to stop on a dime, break tackles, and accelerate. That's really it. We all know its college, and against Iowa.

It goes both ways. Some players actually perform better in the NFL than they ever did in college. Sometimes it's being put in better position to succeed. Sometimes in college the entire focus of a defensive gameplan is shutting down a guy like Barkley and forcing the team to beat you other ways. I don't think Barkley will command that level of attention from defenses right away, if he does than that should be a huge boon to the rest of the offense and Odell should go ballistic.
just to be clear
Tom from LI : 6/30/2018 6:57 am : link
I am not saying that this is what his production will be every game.

What I am saying is this is the the type of play you will see from him. I think this games represents everything he does well. How he runs between the tackles, catches out of the backfield. How he makes something out of nothing.

He just looks so fluid. He surely isn't a violent runner. He is more of a swiss army knife opposed to a hammer.

Funny cuz the original post was "Good video to see what we should expect" If you expect 211 yards per game you are going to be sadly disappointed. I'm excited about about SB, but he's not playing Iowa again
