In 1997, the NBA named it's 50 greatest players of all-time. Of which, Shaq was the last active player.
Question is, in the roughly 20 years since (21 to be exact), who is worthy of being added to this list based on today and not future potential?
5 most obvious in no particular order:
Kidd
Kobe
LeBron
Dirk
Duncan
7 more who I don't think can be argued as of right now:
Nash
Iverson
KG
Ray Allen
Wade
Curry
KD
CP3
It's fairly easy to get to this point point. But from here?
Guys I think would make it:
Carmelo
Vince Carter
Pau Gasol
Guys I'm less certain about:
Pierce
Harden
Westbrook
Parker
Ginobili
Am I underrating Carmelo and Pierce because I don't like them?
Have Harden and Westbrook done/proven enough?
Am I overrating Parker and Ginobili because of the Spurs connection?
Am I missing anyone?
Nate Archibald
Paul Arizin
Charles Barkley
Rick Barry
Elgin Baylor
Dave Bing
Larry Bird
Wilt Chamberlain
Bob Cousy
Dave Cowens
Billy Cunningham
Dave DeBusschere
Clyde Drexler
Julius Erving
Patrick Ewing
Walt Frazier
George Gervin
Hal Greer
John Havlicek
Elvin Hayes
Magic Johnson
Sam Jones
Michael Jordan
Jerry Lucas
Karl Malone
Moses Malone
Pete Maravich
Kevin McHale
George Mikan
Earl Monroe
Hakeem Olajuwon
Shaquille O'Neal
Robert Parish
Bob Pettit
Scottie Pippen
Willis Reed
Oscar Robertson
David Robinson
Bill Russell
Dolph Schayes
Bill Sharman
John Stockton
Isiah Thomas
Nate Thurmond
Wes Unseld
Bill Walton
Jerry West
Lenny Wilkens
James Worthy
You have to look at it that way. You have 21 guys on your list. You can’t have a top 50 with 71 players on it.
Pierce
Harden
Westbrook
Parker
Ginobili".
Pierce the only one I'd put on there from this list. I don't know if I'd put P. Gasol on there either.
My alltime fave: John Havlicek
You can make a case against Westbrook for lack of playoff success but Harden is assuredly going to make the list, as hateable as he is.
