NFT: Yankees News: Drury called up

nygnyy274 : 6/29/2018 7:11 am
Funny just hours after Francesa said on his show yesterday that there would be no shot he gets called up because there is no where for him to play he doesn’t have a position lol. Francesa at his finest. And the Red Sox traded for Steven Pearce. He has now played for every team in the AL East. Wish it was the Yankees who got him and Walker released

Can he play C?

That would be great.

but who knows how long he'll be up. Yanks had an open roster spot for a position player and are facing three lefties vs. Boston this weekend. Clint Frazier would have likely been the guy, but he hasn't done his 10 days in minors since being demoted.

Was going to come down to Drury or Austin, but Austin left the game last night in AAA due to his back. So he was unavailable. So the choice was simple. I guess Torreyes could have been considered, but Didi is solid vs. lefties and Toe isn't much of a bat. Bird and Walker have been putrid vs. lefties this year. So bringing up someone that could play 1B, made much more sense.

And Drury has been playing 1B a lot recently in AAA. Not to mention, he can even play 2B and have Torres play SS...if they wanted to sit Didi for a game. I know Drury hasn't played 2B this year yet but he played it all year last year for Arizona, so he shouldn't have a problem filling in there if needed. But chances are he just starts a couple games at 1B this weekend.

Let's see what he does with his shot!!

With no day game after a night game (all three Boston games are night games)...Romine will catch all 3 games. That is why they played Higgy on Wednesday, so Romine would have two days off going into this series.

Eh, I wasn't happy he sat Romine vs the Phils and still feel the same.

Romine could've caught these three upcoming games with just the one day off yesterday IMO. It's not like he's been their primary catcher all year and is over worked. Sure he's caught more since Gary went down but with all three being night games and no day game after one of them, the one day off yesterday would've been enough to enable him to catch all three vs the Sox without much of a problem.
Drury is the replacement for Walker, not Pearce
Heisenberg : 6/29/2018 8:52 am : link
Drury is better than Pearce and has more positional flexibility.

Nothing has happened to Walker. Yanks were carrying an additional pitcher. When they sent down Cessa after his start on Wednesday, they had a roster spot open for a positional player.

With Gallegos throwing 50 pitches on Wednesday, wouldn't surprise me if he is sent down today too. But he was prob saved by fact Frazier can't be recalled yet, and Austin got hurt last night. As they won't need another pitcher until later in this series at earliest.
Yanks value this Sox series more than an extra year of Drury control
BigBlue2112 : 6/29/2018 9:55 am : link
Only had to wait until July 3rd for that extra year.

They can, and probably will, send him back down after the Atlanta series- you want to extra body for interleague games. After Atlanta, they have the Jays, O's and Indians.

Remember the rules of optioning a player to the minors. When you option a player down to the minors, you cannot recall the player for 10 days, except in the case of injury.

Let's assume the Yanks keep Drury with the team through the Atlanta series. They do not actually have to make a roster move until the afternoon of the 6th, when they face the Jays. Ten days later is July 16th- or the first day of All Star break.

The Yanks would not recall Drury then- they would wait until July 20th- which just happens to be the first day of an interleague series against the Mets, when you want the extra position player.

By keeping Drury in the minors from July 6 until July 20th, they would get the necessary number of days to delay his FA clock by one year- the days do NOT have to be consecutive, just a total.

That is true, but even with the 10 day rule, they would not recall him until the 20th, which is the first game after the All Star break.
Paging Greg Bird to courtesy desk.....

You are always hurt and now you are struggling to bat .200. This weekend you will sit on the bench and watch Drury and maybe it will dawn on you that you had better get going or you will be a Padre soon.

Don't ask for whom the bell tolls Greg - it tolls for thee.....

They did end up getting a lot for Hamels.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 6/29/2018 5:01 pm : link
They got their current starting catcher, starting right fielder, and 3 pitching prospects (1 was a top 100 prospect).

But obviously no one of Sevy or Judge's level.

You need to either have big ones, or need psychiatric help to ask for steak or lobster in exchange for chicken soup.
