NFT: Vieques

Anyone ever been there? My wife and I are planning to go this winter. We fly into San Juan, then have the choice of either flying over to Vieques or taking the ferry. Flight appears to be much more convenient but WAY more expensive. Anyone had any experience with this? Thanks.

It was a nice ride, made some friends on the way. Went to a recommended restaurant and had the absolute worst service I've ever had. It was so bad that we quickly got past annoyance and began laughing at it. Its to long a story to post here, but it was astonishing. Maybe I'll post it later when I have more time.
is island OK

Ferry was very inexpensive (I think 1.50 per person) but took about 1 hour And a half. Plane was about $50 per person but we left from Fajardo. Too about 10 min.
Take the flight

We took the ferry in and the flight out. Nearly puked on the ferry ride because we didn't get an outside seat. It can get rough. The flight is absolutely gorgeous.
Haha

What used to be the Naval base has been undergoing a long-term clean-up (including finding and disposing of unexploded ordinance).

It has been some years since I was there, but I thoroughly loved it. You must rent a AWD vehicle, as the roads on the former base are incredibly bad. The reward for driving on them is getting to absolutely beautiful beaches (one lovelier than the next)

If Hector's is unavailable on your dates, the nearby Hacienda Tamadindo is a good second option.
