"So does Barber want Barkley to break his records, including his rookie records?
Im not going to put that pressure on him," Barber said. "I want him to be successful one game at a time, one year at a time. If he is and he stays healthy, I told him, Youll break them all.
Hard to come up with a better response in reaction to Saquan tellin him he was going to break all of Tiki's records
Tiki's reaction to Barkley - (
New Window )
He NEVER had his feelings hurt. He NEVER said a word about Tikis comments until continually pressed to do so by the media. And at that, I think he had a terse, one sentence comment and that ended it. It was the FANS who were hurt and annoyed, myself included, NEVER Eli..
So please stop with that..
Much better
To make statements implying that he did nothing wrong back then to piss off the fans is just being moronic. But, that's fine too.
I'm past all of that and am fine with bringing Tiki back into the Giants fold if that is what Shurmur wants.

Some of you hold grudges for a really long time.
I wasnt happy with his comments right after he retired but we've since won 2 Super Bowls and its now over 10+ years ago. I'm over it.
And the Tiki that sold the Giants down the river to advvance his own broad casting career.....problem with Tiki was, he did not want to start at the bottom and work his way up.....he wanted to start at the top, and one way to do that was to be controversial, and he did that at the expense of his own team mates, coaches, etc.
As a player, my hats off to him.....as for his personal decisions, he is reaping what he has sowed...
How about this, a 3rd side? I love what Tiki did on the field for us, he was a model citizen while here and played his heart out, carrying this team on his back at times with monster games that we hadn't seen before or since. He made some unflattering comments about Eli, but he was being honest, perhaps not smart but he was pursuing a career in broadcasting and had to be seen as impartial. Then he knocked up some chick while his wife was preggo with twins, not a good look, very much a scum bag move but hey, we didn't cheer for his marriage we cheered for his game. So he's been critical of this team/regime and certain players and coaches. He's outspoken, you don't have to like what he says but he has every right to voice it just as you have every right to hate him for it.
My bottom line with Tiki, great player, smart guy and probably a decent guy who like any of us has said and done some shit he probably wishes he hadn't. He's not my favorite guy but I respect his willingness to not be shy and I certainly appreciate what he did in blue.
This. Times 1000. Hands up those on here who have not made a bad call, or said something that you later regret. Yeah he was a weak, crappy human for what he did to his wife, and that cost him his ass, Ill bet he regrets that too. Not justifying that but I think Mr barber has a whole bunch of things he would love to do over if given the benefit of hindsight.
I was unhappy with him, but thats in the past, I think back to the Raiders game many years ago where he just tore them up and that's the Tiki i want to remember. A
Tiki the football player, just awesome, it was a privilege watching him play. Tiki the person, often a twat.
But to his credit, havent heard of him saying anything stupid in some time, and Im glad to see Schurmer and the Giants working to bring him back into the family. Any running back mentorship he can offer Saquon is good IMO, Tiki was the best Giant RB of my lifetime

We have a house divided on Tiki. You're either a fool who looks foolish for not liking him or you're blind to the stunts he pulled and a dick for liking him? Those my only two options?

Jason, of course we have all made bad calls, more than we are proud of. But on these few things, it was ongoing with him on and off for several years, thats a lot different, imv
Agreed. The guy didn't handle some things well, but he's hardly a "piece of crap". He was a great Giant, is a good guy off the field, and is actually pretty damn good on his radio show.
People need to get the fuck over it.
What I don't get are the people who need to villify him, or defend him. Eli doesn't need anyone's protection, and neither does Tiki. Last I checked they were both grown men who don't give a crap about this.
The thing that first bothered me about Tiki hasn't even been mentioned in this discussion--when he criticized Strahan in his 2002 contract negotiations. On a personal level, I could only imagine trying to get a raise at work, and some asshole starts talking out loud about how you are being greedy, and you should accept the company's offer, AND he's saying this deliberately loud enough for the boss to hear to make himself look good. That is a dick move.
Tiki would go on to make many more dick moves. It didn't mean I didn't root for him when he was playing for us. But once he wasn't playing for us, he made the separation between himself and the team quite clear in ways that other Giants never did.
Maybe what made Tiki a great player was his unceasing focus on himself. Maybe that helped him to achieve his great stats. In the end though, after everything, great stats weren't enough to endear Tiki to most Giants fans. They knew he was a dick and treated him appropriately.
That's exactly the point. I don't mind if fans like you dislike the guy, or fans like Greg love him. Everyone gets to have their own opinion, even if I don't get why they are strongly held. What annoys me are the posts like Sonic who get bent out of shape if everyone is not thinking in unison.
That Tiki had when he was here - neither is naturally inclined to put his head down and go for the three yards, just to move the chains.
They want to "take it to da house" on every play.
Coughlin couldn't deal with that, and Tiki rebelled and ran his mouth. I don't think Barkley is not the ego-maniac that Tiki was. I don't think Shurmer is the hard-ass that the Old Man was; we'll see how it plays out.
All that needs to be said.
The amount of sour grapes and grudges people still hold towards this guy is astounding.
It's ancient history now.
I probably should simply not go on any thread that pertains to Tiki. Its never a positive reaction. Its what I eventually did with Fassel threads. I stayed or tried to stay off them. Peter in Atl actually helped me with that.
The combination of those actions convinced me that he's just a bad person. Completely selfish and devoid of integrity.
Nevertheless, he was the best RB to ever put on a Giants uniform. In my lifetime, anyway. He was truly a great player. I'm not one to take that away from him.
Greg,
It was never just about Eli. He made comments like that the whole time he was on the team. He went public in favor of management talking about other players contracts. He threw coaches under the bus frequently during and after his career. In the end I don't think a lot of it bothered fans until he retired as the comments always seemed to be about bettering the team. However, post career those same types of comments came off as bettering himself.
And i realize We all unequivocally love Strahan, but he has done a netter job of fronting, all indications are Strahan is the bigger self centered prima donna.
Damn thunder and lightning two headed kraken!
Recall how the Eagles' Brain Westbrook ( a very good player, himself) was always begging Tiki to work-out with him.
Tiki actually got better with age (even as his natural talent diminished). This is what Westbrook recognized.
I remember one of the things that Tiki shared - Always try to not have your feet in the ground when tackled - this prevents undue torque (protecting your knees, legs, ankles .....
Like I said, Tom insisted on Tiki taking hits - Tiki disagreed bitterly.
In his "declining years" was the art of the cut-back run. He worked hard with his fullback Jim Finn, to achieve much success with that play.
Tiki had the highest regard for him ...
https://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/11/sports/football/giants-finn-is-the-anonymous-blocking-back.html
"He is the unsung, anonymous guy that I depend on for a lot of my success," said Barber, who followed Finn for many of his career-best 1,518 yards last season, and 760 halfway through this one. (2005) "He's an extension of me."
Hopefully, Barkley can reprise that type of relationship on the gridiron with present FB Shane Smith.
Barkly has tons more ability than Tiki ever had, and if he's 1/2 as smart - he will be amazing.
.. I could care less what he did with his women and marriages
Very nice. Whatta guy..And its COULDNT care less
Tiki, not so much the latter. One guy criticized Eli, the other did not.

That's was exactly what I'm talking about.
To a lessor extent, Ahmad Bradshaw was successful doing the same thing. Difference with him is that he bought in to the between-the-tackles things and became a ferocious runner, inside.
On a related note, I have no idea how much zone blocking we'll have this year, but I know that Barkley with that type of blocking could be a terror.
By the way, Brown is the Dallas RBcoach and apparently in demand around the league.

I had to log on to agree. The cat is self serving. Nuff said.
You care a little?
You have a list of things that you care less about?
oh, and get your emotions in check.
Joey for the win.
