Tiki encouraging Saquan

River Mike : 6/29/2018 10:02 am
"So does Barber want Barkley to break his records, including his rookie records?

“I’m not going to put that pressure on him," Barber said. "I want him to be successful one game at a time, one year at a time. If he is and he stays healthy, I told him, ‘You’ll break them all.’

Hard to come up with a better response in reaction to Saquan tellin him he was going to break all of Tiki's records

Why exactly?

Did Tiki not fail as a leader announcing his retirement mid season in 2006? Did Tiki not poop all over Eli in '07 and throw him and TC under the bus? DId he not leave his 8 month pregnant wife because he was having an affair?

Yeah he's the man. Glad he supports Barkley, but he is still a piece of crap IMO.

yawn. Barry Sanders, a nearly mythological athlete, received hate mail from Lions fans specifically because he announced his retirement after the season and didn't give them a heads up. Hate doesn't require consistency, only emotion.

We have a house divided on Tiki. You're either a fool who looks foolish for not liking him or you're blind to the stunts he pulled and a dick for liking him? Those my only two options?

How about this, a 3rd side? I love what Tiki did on the field for us, he was a model citizen while here and played his heart out, carrying this team on his back at times with monster games that we hadn't seen before or since. He made some unflattering comments about Eli, but he was being honest, perhaps not smart but he was pursuing a career in broadcasting and had to be seen as impartial. Then he knocked up some chick while his wife was preggo with twins, not a good look, very much a scum bag move but hey, we didn't cheer for his marriage we cheered for his game. So he's been critical of this team/regime and certain players and coaches. He's outspoken, you don't have to like what he says but he has every right to voice it just as you have every right to hate him for it.

My bottom line with Tiki, great player, smart guy and probably a decent guy who like any of us has said and done some shit he probably wishes he hadn't. He's not my favorite guy but I respect his willingness to not be shy and I certainly appreciate what he did in blue.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/29/2018 10:58 am : link
That's a fair take Joey.

He was a great Giant. Nobody can dispute that. And some of the stuff he has done off the field is pretty low/embarrassing. He's a complex guy for sure, like many people.
Tiki
River Mike : 6/29/2018 10:59 am : link
did and said some unfortunate, but not really horrible things ...... I know, that's a very subjective judgement. But in the context of Giants' history, he occupies a prominent and well earned place. He has served a shunning and penance, personally I welcome him back and glad the hatchet is being buried.
Poop on Eli!
joeinpa : 6/29/2018 11:00 am : link
Man, some of you guys can just not be objective about Eli.

It s never his fault, he should never be benched or criticized. The Giants should not spend a high pick on a quarterback because Eli s still got it.

I hope he does, I m a Giants fan. But if you can t see that Eli has at least been part of the problem since 11, there s not much hope of getting you be more objective

Nothing Tiki said at that point in time in 07 was false. People on BBI were saying the same thing. Not sure where he threw TC "under the bus" either. And even if he did, I really don't give a shit.

As for him leaving his pregnant wife -- who the fuck am I to judge? Strahan had a messy divorce, why aren't you getting on his case? What about Landon Collins and all his baby mamas? Who cares?

Tiki played his ass off on the field, was the best RB the Giants have ever had, and is a smart, articulate person. Went to UVA on an academic scholarship. He's the man.
Here’s a pretty decent bottom line IMO:
Big Blue '56 : 6/29/2018 11:23 am : link
Tiki was the best all around back we ever had. He was/is a phony piece of shit who I have zero use for and would love to never have to hear his name again. Unfortunately I will have to..

And btw? The angst he cause this fan from ‘97 to TC’s appearance with his fucking crucial fumbling was quite taxing sports-wise
So putting the drama aside for a second...
Jan in DC : 6/29/2018 11:23 am : link
I think that Saquon has the weight lifting routine that Tiki used to put himself through toward the middle of his career. There were always a bunch of articles about how Tiki would lift for Power, not for reps and trained really hard in the offseason. I'd imagine that Tiki imparted some of that on him, but one thing we know is that Saquon doesn't slack off when it comes to training.

Regardless of his past with the team, hopefully Tiki can have a good effect on today's Giants.
Too?
Big Blue '56 : 6/29/2018 11:25 am : link

He NEVER had his feelings hurt. He NEVER said a word about Tiki’s comments until continually pressed to do so by the media. And at that, I think he had a terse, one sentence comment and that ended it. It was the FANS who were hurt and annoyed, myself included, NEVER Eli..

So please stop with that..

If fans still want to criticize him for all the crap he pulled back then, then that's fine - Tiki earned it. If fans want to let that go then fine - forgive and forget.

To make statements implying that he did nothing wrong back then to piss off the fans is just being moronic. But, that's fine too.

I'm past all of that and am fine with bringing Tiki back into the Giants fold if that is what Shurmur wants.

There are two Tiki's......
Doomster : 6/29/2018 12:20 pm : link
There is the one who gave 100% when playing for the Giants.....

And the Tiki that sold the Giants down the river to advvance his own broad casting career.....problem with Tiki was, he did not want to start at the bottom and work his way up.....he wanted to start at the top, and one way to do that was to be controversial, and he did that at the expense of his own team mates, coaches, etc.

As a player, my hats off to him.....as for his personal decisions, he is reaping what he has sowed...

Anne Frank and whining about how mean Coughlin was always bothered me a lot more than his Eli comments. Eli did a fine job using his wry sense of humor to turn Tiki’s leadership crack to his advantage.

Tiki the football player, just awesome, it was a privilege watching him play. Tiki the person, often a twat.

But to his credit, haven’t heard of him saying anything stupid in some time, and I’m glad to see Schurmer and the Giants working to bring him back into the family. Any running back mentorship he can offer Saquon is good IMO, Tiki was the best Giant RB of my lifetime

Big Blue '56 : 6/29/2018 12:56 pm : link
most of whom never heard of BBI, did not think it was minor when he was booed unmercifully. Minor in life? Of course. But in sports, where rooting interests are deep, some of us don’t appreciate unclassy condescension. I hated it with Trahan at times, I detest it with Tiki for the years he kept it going.
Really just one question...
Mike from Ohio : 6/29/2018 12:56 pm : link
Why do so many people still care about other people's opinions of Tiki Barber? I appreciate what the guy did for the Giants, and think he was a bit of a twat for what he said and did years ago. But I don't really think about it much, and really could care less about his personality. If he wants to give sequin advice, a successful RB from the same franchise is certainly qualified.

What I don't get are the people who need to villify him, or defend him. Eli doesn't need anyone's protection, and neither does Tiki. Last I checked they were both grown men who don't give a crap about this.

Face Pepler : 6/29/2018 1:15 pm : link
He was an amazing player, the best running back we've had. But he was a huge dick. It isn't primarily that he did bad things--LT did bad things too. But LT wasn't a huge dick.

The thing that first bothered me about Tiki hasn't even been mentioned in this discussion--when he criticized Strahan in his 2002 contract negotiations. On a personal level, I could only imagine trying to get a raise at work, and some asshole starts talking out loud about how you are being greedy, and you should accept the company's offer, AND he's saying this deliberately loud enough for the boss to hear to make himself look good. That is a dick move.

Tiki would go on to make many more dick moves. It didn't mean I didn't root for him when he was playing for us. But once he wasn't playing for us, he made the separation between himself and the team quite clear in ways that other Giants never did.

Maybe what made Tiki a great player was his unceasing focus on himself. Maybe that helped him to achieve his great stats. In the end though, after everything, great stats weren't enough to endear Tiki to most Giants fans. They knew he was a dick and treated him appropriately.

That's exactly the point. I don't mind if fans like you dislike the guy, or fans like Greg love him. Everyone gets to have their own opinion, even if I don't get why they are strongly held. What annoys me are the posts like Sonic who get bent out of shape if everyone is not thinking in unison.
Very diplomatic of TIKI
TMS : 6/29/2018 1:36 pm : link
the way he handled the "breaking your records comment' which was out of line and arrogant IMO. SB would be smart to get all the help and advice he can from TIKI. TB improved himself, in 4years more, than any back I have seen in the NFL from 03 to 06. From a fumbler ,2nd stringer to one the best all purpose RBs in the league. Listen and learn thats what he did. Glad he wants to part of the Giants picture again. i was once one of his biggest detractors at the end of his career. Not his talent but his ambition. He quit at the top. He thought he would be Strahan but then got a rude awakening. Tough smart, resilient guy . Listen SB.
WHY?

I think Barkley's going to have the same problem ....
Manny in CA : 6/29/2018 1:47 pm : link

That Tiki had when he was here - neither is naturally inclined to put his head down and go for the three yards, just to move the chains.

They want to "take it to da house" on every play.

Coughlin couldn't deal with that, and Tiki rebelled and ran his mouth. I don't think Barkley is not the ego-maniac that Tiki was. I don't think Shurmer is the hard-ass that the Old Man was; we'll see how it plays out.

Don’t even give him a nanosecond of Thought in the day to day. I certainly don’t. Out of sight, out of mind. That said, there are people, for whatever reason, who upon seeing Tki’s(or anyone else in life they do not care for) name, or photo or live, get an automatic nauseous reaction. It’s not premeditated or important per se, but it certainly is reactionary.

I probably should simply not go on any thread that pertains to Tiki. It’s never a positive reaction. It’s what I eventually did with Fassel threads. I stayed or tried to stay off them. Peter in Atl actually helped me with that.

It's the combination of the betrayal of the Giants franchise in announcing his retirement in the middle of a playoff run, his betrayal of Eli and TC in his public comments, and his betrayal of his wife by abandoning her when she was pregnant with twins to take up with a 21 year old chippy.

The combination of those actions convinced me that he's just a bad person. Completely selfish and devoid of integrity.

Nevertheless, he was the best RB to ever put on a Giants uniform. In my lifetime, anyway. He was truly a great player. I'm not one to take that away from him.
