Sounds like today's the day he's going to commit to signing somewhere. Teams are expected to be notified today where he will sign, with the Islanders getting the first call.
As posted Thursday night, he's gone unless the Isles pay stupid money
You don't think it warrants its own thread?
No. NYR fans here don't typically acknowledge the Isles existence (or at least don't want to acknowledge) so you, as a Rangers fan, creating a separate thread about an Islander feels like a precursor to an excuse for some schadenfreude on your end should he not resign. Feels disingenuous, agenda-driven. Optically. All us diehards know what's at stake here without its own thread.

Obviously I want him to sign elsewhere as a Rangers fan, but I'm sorry, I don't agree that it doesn't warrant its own thread. Ties to the Islanders aside, Tavares is the biggest free agent on the market. In fact, his impending signing to we know not where is holding up free agency and the trade market. It's the first domino that needs to fall.
And BTW, disingenuous? I have no idea where Tavares is going. For all I know he could re-sign.
I sure hope you have the ability to understand dissenting opinions.
And I also think you're intelligent enough to know this is a bit of an emotionally charged time for my contingent here. Tread carefully.
Yes, I understand your opinion. And yes, I know it is an emotionally charged time for Islanders fans. Did I say or do anything to offend or provoke you? It's not like I'm going to rub it in your face if he signs elsewhere.
Hoping for a happy NYI ending here, but after 30 or so years of endless shit sandwiches, we are prepared for Murphy's Law to rear its head again. I've been steadfast around him resigning from the get go, but ain't nothing in life guaranteed. Whatever happens, the sun will rise and set tomorrow. In Lou we trust.

Yep. I wont share with you what Im hoping for, but I dont have any intentions of rubbing your nose in it regardless of the outcome. If he does decide to leave, once the sentimental aspect wears off, the Isles are a team with a couple of really nice pieces and a ton of financial flexibility...surely a little further away from contending than before, but really not in a bad situation.
Achilles then the surgery that removed a significant amount of bone. He will be late career forsberg shortly. Still great but who knows how many games he can play.
Furthermore, paying any dman into their mid thirties is a losing proposition. These guys are aging out faster than ever before. Every fanbase has a once good dman turned albatross. 32 is the new 37 in the current nhl. Elc dmen are the way to go.
Had no idea you were a hockey fan. Thought you were strictly NYG/NYK.
Are you being facetious?
No. 100% serious.
I've been participating in Rangers threads since I've joined BBI in 2007. The Rangers and the NHL have always been my #2 behind the Football Giants and the NFL.
Have to think if he made it this far without resigning
He is leaving. The leverage of the extra year was what I thought would keep him. Call me a pessimist but I feel another nut punch coming.
Youre an islander fan...you shouldnt expect any less. In the rnd when he leaves, he will be as big a fraud as John Spano. This organization bent over backwards nonstop for him. JT was the captain of this country club. He was pissed off when they traded his buddy Moulson and from that point on, none of his buddies was ever traded. He asked to not be traded this season at deadline. He has been a part of the problem.
Barzal will play much harder in his D zone and provide just as much offense. Sign a center that can win faceoffs and be good defensively. Find a capable goalie and bring back de haan. And hopefully a better system will help. We know we arent going to win a cup anytime soon but it will be nice to have a gm that will at least try to change it up and a coach that isnt clueless. Weight was actually MUCH worse than Cappy.
I think his girlfriend/wife is from Ontario and is rumored to be pushing him hard to leave. There were rumors of TB or SJ being preferable for locale and such.
If he helps push the Leafs over the top and win it all he becomes a hometown hero. I think theres that appeal for him too. To be a guy who ends the Drought.
As a Devils fans I sympathize with the Isles. Holik, Niedermayer, Gomez, Parise. Elias was the only one of the big core guys who willingly stayed. Its why drafting well continuously is so important.
and this will come across shitty, but Ill say it. The Islanders are a rinky dink franchise which has absolute zero energy. I went to an Isles-Flyers game at Barclays and the place was empty & the fans who were there were Flyer fans.
They generate absolutely no buzz. A no brainer for JT.
They're probably already planning the parade in Toronto

Awesome hot take! This may come across badly, but you seem slow and simple minded. Your posts read like they were written by a 9 year old. Are you in Anal hanging out in his basement playing tummy sticks?
Didn't mean to go low road. Bad day with Tavares leaving. Not sure why some people post what they do but I am sure they have their reasons.
Apologies to Anak (not Anal) and Sean.
Most of my family are Isles fans. You dont need to apologize because I totally get the emotion rooting for them. But I wonder what is so hard about watching them play at Barclays. I wonder why no one went to the Nassau Coliseum. I hope the new stadium pans out and so does Lou Lamoriello, but the franchise has generated absolutely zero buzz.

It's like anything else. If you don't win, fans don't show up. When the Giants don't win the stadium fills with the other teams' fans. Growing up in the 80s in NY it was easy to forget the Rangers were a local team because nobody wore jerseys or talked about them. The Islanders have not been competitive for a long time. Fans don't spend money to watch their favorite team lose.
It felt like this team was turning a corner this offseason, and this sets that back quite a bit. In the long run it may work out, but for a fanbase that has watched the team rebuild for 20 years, the thought of another 2-3 years of rebuilding is disappointing to say the least.

He can go to LA and join Kovalchuck and Kopitar(Gaborik still there?); Looks like they are reloading.

I think Tavares is better, but Barzal is more fun to watch. He's going to be a nightmare to play against.

I agree with Diversify generally on dmen (I wouldn't be looking to sign McDonagh next year), but do think Karlsson is an exception.

Do the Leafs have enough cap space? Do they need to dump a contract?

Rangers should help if necessary

Rangers do as well as the LEafs have done in a rebuild -- even without Mathews.
My thought exactly
Did you just agree with your own post? LOL.
The Leafs obviously had the good fortune of nailing 3 consecutive top 10 picks, centers, in Nylander, Marner, and #1 overall Matthews.
Add in Morgan Reilly another top 5 pick and it's not easy to duplicate that without some good fortune.
I like Anderson, Chytil, and Kravstov, but none as as sure things as the Leafs higher picks.
It could turn out just as well, but the Leafs were really bad for a really long time to rebuild.
