Question of the day.
section125 : 7/1/2018 7:44 am : link
You have to keep one, who would you rather have, Chasen Shreve or Sonny Gray?

Shreve at least can do mop up and when he is on (more often than not) is effective. Gray is ineffective almost every outing.

Me, I keep Shreve....
Normally I’d say Gray
UConn4523 : 7/1/2018 8:32 am : link
but I wouldn’t even trust him in long relief out of the pen in the playoffs. He is a Yankee bust.
I feel Rothchild is pretty useless as a pitching coach.

Let’s find Gray a sports psychologist, have another coach work with him. I say trade him too, but not if the return is minimal. Fowler will turn into a .280-20-20 player with above average D, a better Gardner maybe down the road. Can’t just give up on Gray.

Bring Sheffield up for the stretch run, transition him to the pen for the postseason.

Wow. Have you been paying attention at all to the whole pitching staff?

They have the best pen in the game, Sevy has turned into one of the top pitchers in all of baseball, CC has morphed into a crafty pitcher, Holder has emerged and Betances is back, all while keeping these guys rested and fresh. Do you think he has nothing to do with that? He's the main guy in charge of this staff and is pretty much the one who Boone relies on for who and when they come in.

I'm sure he's worked even harder with the guys who've struggled and is just as frustrated with Gray and Shreve as we all are. If anyone can get those guys straightened out its him.

If he was let go he would have a job in no minutes.

More hot takes from Jim.
Early in the season, after one of his poor performances...
manh george : 7/1/2018 10:35 am : link
I saw an interview with Gray on TV. I felt after that, that he was probably doomed. He sounded like "the little engine that could" with an anxiety disorder--"I think maybe I can if only everything goes right."

Not the kid of confidence necessary to be a quality player in NYC. I, too expect that he probably gets traded and magically gets his skills back somewhere else.

Teams are going to try to extort the Yankees in a traded for a starter, with last night sending the message that the need for another experienced middle-quality starter is urgent.

Bingo. It's anxiety, he's not cut out for pitching in NY. At all.
agree MG

so much so that unless its an ace...im with Rich in DC. Wait.

An ace would cost so a GM could declare victory to his owner and fans:

One starting position player

One close AAAA position player

One close to MLB starting pitcher

2-3 lower minors pitchers

Sorry. Thats close to what I think another teams Fo would have to claim not to be ridden out on a rail.

I totally agree that Gray's makeup as seen via ( granted its only a slice into his real makeup) interviews is not encouraging.

Grays interviews are brutal
BigBlueShock : 7/1/2018 10:50 am : link
I noticed that right off the bat too. His voice quivers as he’s stumbling through words as if he’s nervous as hell in front of the cameras. He’s just not a very confident young man and it shows up all over the place

I agree and think his main problem is between his ears. I can't really figure out how a guy can have his type stuff and make it to this level but yet have a confidence problem, even though I think he does.

I guess he's human like the rest of us but I'd think getting to where he is would take toughness and instill even more confidence.

As far as his interviews, he doesn't seem confiden or comfortable at all. I wonder if it's is just as simple as NYC and the amount of media here, and him being a guy who just can't make it here?

It's like a pitcher's equivalent of the yips.
manh george : 7/1/2018 2:15 pm : link
There are professional athletes who simply cannot handle the pressures of their game, and that especially includes sports that require precise mechanics like pitching or quarterbacking, or tennis or golf. And in a few sports like baseball, there is a bigger group that cannot handle the pressures of their game in NYC specifically.

Indeed, kudos to Cashman in largely being able to avoid this pattern. A headcase like Gray was going to come along at some point, as they have in the past, but Cashman has done a damned good job of limiting the headcase headcount.

And then trade him based on the improved statistics. If they can't trade him before the July 31 deadline, then in the off-season. Bottomline is if I'm the Yankees GM, I'm thinking of how to improve his trade value so that he doesn't become a complete write-off.
Just as a side note
rich in DC : 7/3/2018 10:38 am : link
Sheffield had another great start last night in AAA. 7 IP, 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 ER, 6K- no extra base hits allowed.

Now that we are just past the halfway point of the season, Sheffield has thrown 80 IP. His career high is 128. Assuming that the Yanks are aiming to add another 30-35+, which they usually target, his cap would be somewhere around 160-165 IP. Therefore, he is just about on target.

Just a point to watch for. While the Yanks had Sheffield throw on a normal 5 day schedule this time, in his prior 3 starts, they had 6, 6, and 8 days between starts for him. Given that the Yanks have added days between starts for him to try and limit his innings, they MIGHT be a possibility that the Yanks MIGHT try and use him in next week's doubleheader against the O's.

Remember that the Yanks plan to activate Tanaka to pitch one of the games on the 9th. Sheffield pitched on the 2nd- if the Yanks skipped 7 days between starts, Sheffield could make the start in the other game.

The Yanks are allowed a 26th man for the DH- and with Montgomery still technically on the 10 day DL, the Yanks could shift Montgomery to the 60 day DL, open a spot for Sheffield and have him pitch one of the two games- then send him back after the game.

Even if the Yanks intended to bring up Sheffield on a more permanent basis, it would make sense to send him down again after the DH- the All Star break is coming, and it would be better to have Sheffield get a couple outings in at AAA instead of sitting around for 10 days or so while the Yanks reset their rotation after the break.

Keep an eye on Sheffield's next start. If he makes his "regular rest" start on Saturday, he obviously isn't coming up for the DH. But if they skip that start...

Right move. Johnny showed some big time ability but he also showed he's got some work to do. As RAB pointed out, part of his problem is losing velocity relatively quickly, which is perfectly understandable given how little he's pitched over the past few seasons. Needs to build up some arm strength.
