Is the type of guy we should be signing, not the 33 year old Anthony Tolliver. Tolliver plays D and can shoot the 3 but something tells me he will get overpaid for what he is

Would love Hezonja and Oquinn
GMEN46 : 7/1/2018 7:05 am : link
Back on 1 year deals but looks like golden state and Phili both want Oquinn. It looks like knicks are under the cap by about $7 million so do they get the full mid level or no? Can they sign hezonga to 1 year $7 mill and then go over the cap for Oquinn on a 1 year deal?
What is. the
XBRONX : 7/1/2018 7:19 am : link
point of the Knicks signing anyone to a one year deal?
For me its very logical
GMEN46 : 7/1/2018 7:31 am : link
See is Mario is legit, if so its good for 2 reasons, 1 you can package him in a trade at deadline to offload Lee for expirings or 2 its anothwr young plywe that you have added to the mix. Additionally you dont want to sign anyone to a deal past 1 year. Oquinn is great locker room guy who is still developing and is again another piece that can be traded at deadline to a contender even if its for a second rounder its worth it.
Why wouldnt
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2018 7:44 am : link
Orlando match a cheap 1 year deal for hezonja?
Correct me if I am
GMEN46 : 7/1/2018 7:49 am : link
Wrong but I believe he is an unrestricted free agent since they did not offer qualifying offer last year.
Trade idea for OKC
GMEN46 : 7/1/2018 8:09 am : link
OKC wants to get rid of Melo. They wont be able to sign much even after they get rid of him so knicks can be a big help in many different ways. Hardaway and Baker for Melo then obviously cut Melo immediately. As much as most dont like hardaway, his salary is actually League average or below for a SG. He could also thrive as a 3rd or 4th guy and is still young. This would also save okc considerable money given there tax situation. For Knicks it obviously frees up the long hardaway contract and baker just gets thrown in to make money work, may need to include another contract in knicks side. I think okc has to include a 2nd rounder in this scenario.

Another option would be Lee Thomas and baker as has been discussed. In this scenario okc doesnt have to commit to long term deal of hardaway and gets 2 potential rotation players who play well within a team. Saves some money for them as well.

Option 3 which I am not sure if they can do, package Lee and Beasley on a sign and trade deal. This would give okc 2 good rotational guys off the bench to add some depth and save them money. Not sure if knicks can sign and trade beasley

To me the most logical place for knicks to shed cap space is by trading back for Melo and buying him out.

What is the upside? 33% 3's stink
Some of you guys are hilarious
GMEN46 : 7/1/2018 9:38 am : link
Whats the upside? He is 23 years old and showed a lot of improvement last year, he is very athletic, why not take the chance, would you rather sign Beasley? What if he ends up 15 and 5 and shoots 40 percent from 3 this year and now he is only 24 years old. These are types of guys knicks should be signing extremely young guys who have the talent that just hasnt played out yet.
Showed improvement?
XBRONX : 7/1/2018 9:48 am : link
He shot better from 3 his rookie year.
I would be really happy with a Hezonja signing
Mike in NJ : 7/1/2018 9:49 am : link
I can't see him costing anything more than $5 or $6 mil per year. Even if it's a 2 or 3 year deal, he will have very minimal effect on next year's cap situation, you would basically be getting him for what the incomplete roster hold would be anyway.

He had flashed some potential when he got minutes in Orlando, in the 30 games that he started last year he averaged 14-5-2 and had shooting splits of 46%/37%/83%. At 23 years old there is still plenty of room for growth.
Personally
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2018 10:01 am : link
I dont see the difference between Hezonja and THJR, except hes a better rebounder/ worse passer and scorer. Maybe better suited to play the 3, but its not like either are defensive stoppers. I ultimately think Frank is a 2 so I dont get bringing Hezonja in but nothing wrong with a 1 year deal.
More importantly
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2018 10:06 am : link
Dotson (who I think has a higher upside as a wing defender) is making pennies the next 2 years, bringing in Hezonja would kill his potential at minutes in the rotation. He hasnt played much but hes similar as a 3 point shooter and rebounder with more upside defensively.
.

Shortly before midnight, several league execs were under the impression that Mario Hezonja saw the Knicks as his top choice in free agency. It will be interesting to see if a longer contract offer from another suitor impacts negotiations here.
Guys
GMEN46 : 7/1/2018 11:00 am : link
The goal is to acquire as many young assets as possible for development/potential trades. You cant just look at a stat as a stand-alone for a season and you cant just look at his 3 point shooting. The stats as a starter were solid enough that he is worthy of bringing in on a 1 year deal. He is 23 years old!! The talent was enough to picked in the top 10 of a draft. If he is comparable to hardaway then a Contender will want him in a trade at the deadline on a $6 million 1 year deal. This is minimal risk high reward opportunity, If he ends up being a bust who cares see ya later. If he ends up playing 30 mins a night and is a 15-5 guy then he can be packaged in a trade. This is how knicks should be thinking. Chances are if they want 2 maxes next year they will have to do one of them as a sign and trade so they will need assets to trade to rid themselves of Noah.

Lee is not playing at all next year in this team whether he is here or not so there are plenty of minutes to go around, Mario played 2,3 and even 4 in small ball line ups.

there are more parts of basketball then....
Italianju : 7/1/2018 11:02 am : link
3 pt %. Hezonja is young and showed flashes of upside. You sign him for 2 years and hope you get lucky. And i dont pay him anything more then a few mill a year, if he wants more then you let him go elsewhere. But dont sign him to a 1 year deal, the upside for us is so limited on that.
1 year deal is harmless
giantsfan44ab : 7/1/2018 11:06 am : link
Youre kidding yourself if you think hes going to get anything in return as expiring at the deadline. He was unplayable for 2 years and had a hot streak against the tanking teams this year. Theres a reason hes a top 10 talent and yet the freaking magic dont think he has any use to them even on a 1 year deal. Ill say it again - 1 years is harmless but he doesnt excite me, he has flashy plays, is a sieve on defense and hasnt shown consistency as a shooter and thats what hes supposed to be good at. And like Lee he wont bring anything back in a trade.

I question whether or not you have ever watched Kawhi actually play.

Simmons cant shoot, at all. They would be far better off woth Kawhi and LeBron than they would LeBron and Simmons.

They have a real shot of pulling off a Lebron/ Kawhi/ Embiid/ Simmons big 4. I think putting a good shooter like Reddick as the 5th guy negates any concerns about Simmons lack of shooting.

If they want they can offer a better package than the Lakers unless the Spurs view Ingram as a cant miss prospect. But Philly
Could offer some combination or all of Saric/ Covington/ Fultz/ Zhaire Amith/ Miami 2021 pick. And I think getting Kawhi is really like getting the combo of Lebron and Kawhi. I dont see Lebron saying no to playing with that 3 plus supporting cast.

What would his other option be? The Lakers with all those young guys? Back to Cleveland ?

I think he just wants to pin point a reason to get out of San Antonio other than "I dont like being in San Antonio, this team has no shot against the power houses of the league and I hate being attribute as a system player". He played just fine and shut himself down after a few games.

IMO the biggest problem with LBJ to Philly is Simmons is not a good fit. Kawhi is a way better fit. LBJ/Kawhi/Embiid is a terrible match up for GS. They would get killed on the boards and those 3 are all first team NBA defense caliber players.

I don't think SA gets a better offer than Simmons + Miami 1st rounder either.

Oquinn is great locker room guy who is still developing and is again another piece that can be traded at deadline to a contender even if its for a second rounder its worth it.

I really think you and many others overstate this need to unload lee. Lee could be traded on his own without any added chips in my opinion. Hes making chump change compared to virtually every other vet going. And he can play both ends of the floor.

Just because the Knicks didnt deal lee last season doesnt mean they couldnt deal him.
And oquinn isnt still developing anymore

HE is what he is at this point, which is a pretty good power forward. Pretty good defender, pretty good rebounder and can sneak in 10 points a game. Hes also good for 1-2 boneheaded inexcusable mistakes every single game.

for Kawhi and a future 1st rounder, LeBron to Philly. It makes too much sense

Some of 5ese sixers trades are nuts?

Trading Simmons? The whole reason for a big 3 w lebron? Leonard is at best a complimentary piece. Most overrated player in NBA.

Nice pick up. It's only one year, but I think he'll find a home here.

The Knicks and Hezonja close out a tough recruitment, where several teams -- including Portland, Sacramento and Memphis -- competed for a fifth overall pick from the 2015 NBA Draft. Hezonja was drawn to coach David Fizdale, after going thru several coaching changes in Orlando.

I like it, gives us another young guy to root for this year and leaves flexibility for next summer.
Yup

this is the exact kind of signing they should have made. It probably won't pan out, but there's only upside.

For Hezonja and KNICKS, it's a one-year, $6.5M deal, sources tell ESPN. He'll have a real opportunity to create some traction for his career with the Knicks.

The Knicks are being.....well run?
moespree : 7/1/2018 9:26 pm : link
Yes. Yes I think they are. Smart moves, with a clear plan and an idea about what to do in the years to come. I don't know what to say. It's nothing something you are used to.
Seems laughable to hype Mario
bceagle05 : 7/1/2018 9:27 pm : link
in the aftermath of the Lebron signing, but I think it's a nice job by the Knicks. Orlando doesn't develop talent - look at how Oladipo flourished after leaving there. Tobias Harris, too. Mario started 30 games or so last season and averaged about 15ppg on 37% from deep. There's more upside there. He and KP are close friends, too.

That guy on Twitter who clearly has a source close to Courtney Lee (Jesus Rodriguez?) said this signing makes a Lee trade much more likely. Also cuts into Lance's minutes. Could be a win all around.
Great news!

#Knicks SG C. Lee is telling those close to him he expects to be traded. Hasnt been told when or where but he is under the impression he will not be a Knick by the start of the season.

Yep, that would be a nice offseason. Not a bad start for the Mills/Perry combo, though nothing earth-shattering either. Knox and Mario are nice young additions, and Fizdale's a big upgrade over our recent clown coaches.
Courtney Lee

If nothing else it'll be interesting to see the Knicks rotations.
JustaDiscussion : 7/1/2018 10:35 pm : link
I know that there is the whole "positionless basketball" thing and that most here don't want the Knicks to win a single game, but I'm still curious to see the power forward rotation until KP comes back. Seems that the centers are too big and uncoordinated and the small forwards aren't big enough, at least yet.

Also, I personally liked the Burke and Frank back court last season, but now that there are actually small forwards on the team I'd bet we see more Frank and THjr instead. I'm not the biggest THjr fan. I hope this season is more interesting than the end of last season, as I stopped watching after the all star break.

The sharpshooting Hezonja was seeking a multi-year deal, but he settled despite interest from seven other teams.
